Third Person POV

Novigrad.

...

...

People began gathering in the main square in the middle of the city, while the guards started bringing the prisoner before everyone's eyes.

There he was, Dudu, being dragged toward the pillar where he would be tied atop the pile of firewood, ready to burn him alive.

That was a clear announcement of a horrible execution, and the gathered crowd seemed to approve of such a thing.

"Monster!"

"Burn him!"

"May the Eternal Fire purify him!"

"Monsters hiding among us, waiting for the right moment to slaughter humans! Cursed monsters!"

"Burn the monsters!"

"Monsters, sorcerers, elves, dwarves, all of them!"

"The Eternal Fire will save us!"

The screams of the crowd echoed together with stones and dirt being thrown directly at Dudu, whose face looked utterly broken. He had been suffering torture and beatings from the guards while in captivity.

His eyes tried not to look at the crowd that once loved him as the beloved captain of the city guard, Tellico Lunngrevink Letorte. His gaze lifted, and he saw that on the post beside him there was a burned body, possibly a woman from what remained of it, someone who had been burned the previous night, likely a herbalist accused of practicing magic, something the city was now treating like a witch hunt.

"Humans shouldn't do this..." Ciri, in the middle of that screaming crowd, said angrily as she clenched her fists, while beside her, Madara observed in silence.

Neither of them was trying to do anything there while Dudu began to be tied up.

"I tried to change things, I changed this city, I killed the archbishop of the Eternal Fire in the capital, but even so... This world had become this in just three years of our absence..." Madara said in an indifferent tone.

"I can't say I didn't try to reverse the situation in a more peaceful way, but since things didn't work out that way... We'll have to act..." He said with a dangerous gleam in his eyes.

"You know we'll probably be exposed if we don't act carefully, right? Unless you want our identities announced to the entire world so they know we've returned." Ciri looked back at him before turning her attention to Dudu again.

She didn't really know him, despite having had a few brief encounters while Madara talked to him or met Madame during the time she stayed in the city with Madara. But she wasn't going to let him die like this.

Since it wasn't something Madara fully shared with her, while she was more focused on Aren's pregnancy, Ciri didn't care to involve herself in the affairs of this city and her husband's plans.

Madara had pacified the city, and it was clear the gangs had changed. There were no gangs or bandits waiting to rob and murder people in the alleys, as they had verified on their way there.

Especially because he killed Son Of A Bitch Junior, and the one who should now be assuming the leadership position of the gang of casinos, brothels, and illegal gambling was Zoltan himself. Or at least, it should have been after these three years.

Meanwhile, there was still the gang of dwarves, the beggars, and Dijkstra's informants.

Madara pulled something from his cloak and showed between his fingers four small balls that were smoke bombs.

"We'll act quickly and they won't realize what happened..." Madara said, not wanting to draw attention, even though they had the power to destroy the entire city.

However, he noticed something, and his eyes began to follow toward one of the houses. On the rooftop, he could see hooded shadows appearing there, observing the square and the execution.

He put the bombs away. "You noticed them too?" Ciri murmured quietly.

"Yes... let's wait. Those people certainly aren't with the Eternal Fire guards, and you should know very well what those cloaks mean..." Madara murmured.

Ciri also began to recognize them.

"Let's see what happened during these last three years..." Madara smiled, turning his attention back to the man who climbed onto the platform.

This was Caleb Menge, exactly like in the game. The leader of the city guard in Dudu's place and likely holding the title of commander of the Temple Guard and leader of the witch hunters.

He must have changed the entire system, probably discovered Dudu while putting pressure on him, and turned the guard itself into executors of the Eternal Fire, targeting all non-humans, elves, dwarves, hunting mages, herbalists, alchemists, and every kind of monster in the city.

Even ordinary people were targets of them under any suspicion. Madara was able to see all of this by stealing fragments of memories he acquired while observing the people in the city on the way there.

And the population... some people even thought their methods were wrong, but said nothing, while most seemed to surrender to the idea that everything bad in their lives was the fault of the people they were burning, believing that it would improve their situations.

In truth, they were shallow people searching for a reason to live and someone to blame. Pathetic... Though none of this was something that surprised him much. The population of that world was quite rotten in those aspects.

"People of Novigrad! I know you are all already aware that our former man responsible for the city's security was, in fact, a doppler. An evil monster!" he began.

"I never committed a crime! I always helped this city however I could!" Dudu shouted while the men finished tying him up.

"That is where you're mistaken!" Caleb said to him before turning toward the crowd, spreading his arms.

"How do you think a monster managed to pretend to be human while working for the city, commanding the very force that was supposed to protect these citizens? I can tell you. And it wasn't for trivial reasons."

"But through sacrifices! He falsely accused innocent people to steal their souls and life force! He was secretly draining the souls of every citizen!"

"You all certainly felt something whenever you were around him! I know you did!" He began speaking while the crowd looked horrified.

"This monster needs to devour humans and life force to survive! He was in a very high position, capable of falsely accusing innocent people!"

"While, a few years ago, he appeared to be a hero... but I must say it was another person impersonating him! The one who placed him in power was the demon, Madara Uchiha, whom everyone knows!"

Madara scoffed. The level of fanaticism in those words was bizarre. He wasn't surprised that his name was being mentioned, Dudu could have talked during the torture. But it was amusing to see the shock at hearing his name, as if it were an omen of evil, people covered their mouths with frightened whimpers and seemed to shrink just from hearing his name... Which was fitting.

In any case, there were even more absurdities in the accusation. To begin with, no monster could ever capture a demon. And a demon was a creature that certainly wouldn't be caught by a city's guards and could completely destroy Novigrad itself.

And using words that led people to begin believing they had truly felt something they had never felt, thanks to prejudice... A doppler would never need to devour people, much less consume souls.

"This guy, more than lacking information, is making things up from his own head just to incriminate him." Madara mocked.

Certainly, the people of Novigrad would already dislike a doppler pretending to be human no matter what. That was true, and it would lead to a burning at the stake regardless. There was no need to tell such lies.

"Burn him!"

"He let my son fall sick and die!"

"Yes! I knew someone he and his men personally killed, falsely accusing them! He devoured him down to the bones!"

"I saw him eating human flesh!"

"Kill this abomination that brought disease and death to our city!"

"Our city needs to be purified!"

The outcries soon followed while Dudu became the target of all of it.

"Poor guy..." Ciri murmured, watching the entire commotion.

"Unfortunately, these people act like this," Madara shrugged while Ciri nodded with a somewhat dark expression.

"Let me ask you something, I was naïve when we had to leave Cintra... Were the people of Cintra like this too?" Ciri asked.

"Do you want the easy answer or the real answer?" Madara shot back.

"You don't need to go easy on me after fifteen years by your side..." Ciri murmured.

"Cintra would behave similarly, perhaps not as radically toward non-humans... I saw the refugee camps as we traveled to escape the kingdom. People were placing the blame on your grandmother, on you, and even on me. They openly hated the royal family for Cintra's fall and probably hate us now that we've returned to conquer it again, asking why we didn't try sooner..." Madara said.

Ciri squeezed his hand tightly. "Why do the people of this world act this way, when we've known worlds where they weren't so inclined toward this kind of behavior?" she seemed frustrated.

"But we've also entered worlds even worse than ours," Madara replied.

Ciri merely pressed her lips together, unable to answer. They had certainly entered worlds even worse and witnessed every kind of cruelty.

Worlds contained every type of human and other races. Some were inhabited by benevolent people, others by incredibly cruel people, whatever reasons they might have had.

In this world, the world they were born into, things had always leaned toward a crueler side. Even if it was not so extreme, it was still cruel. Geralt and other witchers would always be looked down upon for not being human, for example. The people there harbored resentment toward the unknown and searched for someone to blame for anything bad in their lives.

"And that is why, by the great order of the great King Radovid, we begin the execution of this monster so the city may become free once more! Let everyone bear witness!" he declared, pointing toward a bishop of the Eternal Fire who approached wearing a white robe from the center of the platform and turned his face toward the crowd.

"Greetings, brave men and women of this city! We are gathered here today to execute this monster! Let all witness the sacred power of the Eternal Fire! Please, commander, begin the execution!"

With those words, Dudu, who looked terrified, now tried to free himself from the ropes, but he was unable to move while a man approached carrying a torch toward the numerous piles of wood at his feet.

"Please... no... don't do this! I never harmed anyone! It's all a lie! I tried to be a good person, even as a doppler!"

He began to cry and beg, but no one cared.

Perhaps someone else might have seen meaning in those words and even given him a pitying look, but all around him were only people staring with hatred, waiting to watch the spectacle of his flesh being consumed by flames while he screamed at the top of his lungs, burned alive in a painful and cruel death.

Ciri tightened her grip even more on the hand she had not let go of from Madara. She was about to act, even though Madara had asked her to hold back with the touch of his hand.

"We should wait. Let's see what they're going to do..." Madara said.

Ciri looked like she was about to do something, but she remained still while watching the torch get closer and closer to the pile.

The torch touched the planks and the fire began to ignite. Dudu struggled even harder in desperation, screaming for help.

That was when an elven voice arose.

"Loc'hlaith vae'thern... luned dh'oine! Shaerrawedd aen chaos... va fail!"

No one had noticed at first, but the tone of the voice and its ancient words, filled with power, suddenly echoed, causing everyone to turn their attention toward the top of one of the multi-story houses surrounding the square.

There was a silhouette there, appearing to be a woman due to the curves beneath the cloak, while she raised her hands and hid her face beneath the hood.

Suddenly, no one reacted anymore.

The first sign came when a black cloud began forming rapidly above the square, frightening everyone. A moment later, the entire square was covered by a massive cloud.

"What is this?! A sorceress?!" Caleb shouted, pointing toward the woman in the dark cloak with red symbols.

But he did not even have time to react when, suddenly, rain appeared together with lightning.

The square reacted immediately when lightning bolts began striking in the middle of the crowd, electrocuting some unfortunate people while wind and rain roared as if everyone were trapped inside a massive storm.

Madara looked toward the figure and could not help but display a smile.

"Stop her! Capture her!" Commander Caleb shouted while watching the flames that had begun to rise at Dudu's feet simply go out.

A man screamed nearby when another hooded woman wearing the same clothes as the woman atop the house raised a fireball and hurled it at the guards, burning several of them alive as they screamed in pain.

The people began fleeing from the lightning, losing all that euphoria and cruelty, replaced by cries of terror as they tried to save themselves.

A group of dwarves also came running through the square, all wearing armor and carrying hammers, axes, and shields, rapidly charging against the soldiers.

Madara vanished without causing even the slightest disturbance, using Hiraishin to move away with Ciri while watching the dwarves enter battle against the guards before they could go after the witch on top of the house.

Up there, she seemed to control the storm, because even more powerful and lethal lightning bolts began striking the soldiers.

Seeing that, Ciri noticed that more guards were quickly entering the square. A massive platoon of at least twenty men appeared, while the dwarves were no more than ten fighting against another fifteen within the square.

Then she began to act. "Let me do this," she said.

Madara said nothing, allowing her to act as well.

Her hand began to glow, and Ciri slowly started rotating it, pointing toward the storm.

Even the sorceress herself who had summoned the storm magic noticed the change and could not help but feel slightly startled.

Suddenly, the storm began to grow, spreading not only through the center of the square but gaining even more power.

Ciri was using the Elder Blood to transform that magical cloud into something at least three times more powerful.

That was the power of her blood. Then she closed her eyes, able to sense every lightning bolt.

In the next moment, a rain of lightning descended upon the platoon with an intense flash, electrocuting all of them while the rain itself seemed to make the lightning spread through the area, terrifying the people even more as they watched twenty men simply die.

The roar of thunder echoed through the middle of the square together with screams. Even the armor worn by that platoon became loose at the same instant, with Ciri using a discharge so powerful that it consumed the liquid from their bodies, causing all the soldiers to shrink in size.

Everyone suddenly stopped and stared in fear at that spell. Even the sorceress herself who had created the storm was still standing above the house. Even with the hood covering her body, it was possible to see that she trembled slightly.

She was frightened and confused, at the very least, because some unknown force had simply taken control of her spell and was now controlling it.

It was not she who had generated those lightning bolts. Not on that scale. Not in such a powerful way. Even the leader of the guard looked frightened by it.

The person who had thrown fire at the soldiers rushed toward Dudu and freed him from the ropes before opening a portal and passing through it with him.

Ciri began helping the dwarves in the square while the lightning struck each of the guards, killing them, while the dwarves fighting there no longer understood anything.

They merely looked toward the sorceress and pointed at her with a certain admiration, thinking she was the one doing all of that, while the woman atop the rooftop herself no longer had control over the cloud.

The dwarves brought down the last soldier, and Ciri was about to kill the leader of the guard. Madara seemed to understand that. "No, not yet," Madara said.

Obviously, he wanted to obtain information from that man, who was now lying on the ground staring at all the dead troops.

The leader began to get up and run for shelter, thoroughly terrified this time. "Ciri, bring the bishop to us," Madara requested.

He spotted the bishop who had given the final order, hiding in a corner, curled up and frightened while the rain still poured heavily over the square. The lightning had limited itself to the square this time, no more attacks were launched after all the enemy men had been killed. Ciri had killed nearly thirty of them.

The sorceress had no other choice except to open a portal and disappear from the rooftops while the spell finally began to be undone and the black cloud started dispersing, not by her, but by Ciri.

Ciri nodded upon hearing Madara. She took a coin and tossed it into the air, using a switch between the coin and the Bishop with her spatial abilities.

The Bishop, who had been curled up, suddenly disappeared along with the coin, switching places with it while falling in front of Madara and Ciri inside one of the alleys untouched by the rain, completely confused.

But he did not even have time to react before Madara grabbed him and knocked him unconscious. "Let's go," Madara simply said.

Ciri nodded, taking his other free hand while the bishop's body disappeared from there.

They could have done much more, but it was not time to act.

First, Madara was quite satisfied, since both sorceresses — the one on top of the building and the one who saved Dudu — wore cloaks from the organization he had created years ago.

They wore the cloak of the Akatsuki.

Which meant that the clone he had left behind before abandoning that world had done a good job.

After all, he was a messenger created to prevent the possible suicide of a sorceress and wanted to encourage the search for something better for the continent. Because even if his actions might only have slowed the tyranny that would come over the years, he still wanted there to be a force capable of fighting against it.
