Chapter 86: Chapter 86: The Informant Selection_1
Several days later.
"Warden, here’s the latest intelligence report," Veronica respectfully handed the report to Aiden in the warden’s office.
"Thanks," Aiden took the report and began to read it carefully.
Using Veronica’s past position in the Mounted Police Force, Aiden had successfully formed a collaborative relationship with them.
Aiden’s overt reason was to deal with hidden dangers within the prison, and the Mounted Police had long since targeted the Skull Gang for eradication; Aiden’s proposal was all benefit and no harm to them—the risk was assumed by Aiden himself.
These days, Aiden had been utilizing his ties with the Mounted Police to gather intelligence on the Skull Gang stationed in the old district; since Camila’s former gang, the Blood Hand Gang, was destroyed, new factions had taken over their territory and power in the old district.
The Skull Gang was one of the factions that had rapidly grown during that period, and the ruthless gang officer, Carlo Borbo, had made significant contributions to the gang’s expansion, rising to just one step below the leader.
However, his style of betraying and using even his own people had made many gang members wary, so much so that the current leader felt that he was powerful enough to pose a threat to his position.
The rapidly expanding Skull Gang and the rising gang officer Carlo were already on the Mounted Police’s radar.
The Mounted Police had been spreading undercover agents and informants within the gang to collect intelligence; through the temporary collaboration, Aiden had gained quite a bit of key information from them.
"This is going a bit too smoothly," Aiden remarked offhandedly.
The more intelligence he gathered, the more feasible Melifilia’s strategy seemed.
Looking back now, it was as if Melifilia had known these pieces of intelligence all along, providing him with the strategy.
He couldn’t help but suspect that Melifilia had some kind of foresight or a special ability to collect external information.
"Yes, the chief also said your idea was very unique. He said he could organize some internal staff to coordinate with your actions," Veronica said.
Veronica thought this strategy was Aiden’s own idea, which deepened her admiration for her superior.
"The Mounted Police’s informants and undercover agents?" Aiden leaned back in his chair and pondered seriously.
The Mounted Police’s willingness to cooperate was strong, and that was probably not just because what Aiden wanted to do was beneficial to them.
The Mounted Police had once directly used Carlo to set up Camila, sending her to prison.
But after pinning the blame on Camila, Carlo took advantage of a grieving young mother’s thirst for vengeance, turning Slyne into a corpse demon.
To some extent, Carlo’s cunning tactics caught the Mounted Police off guard, inadvertently making them complicit in making Slyne what she is now.
Perhaps out of guilt and anger, or maybe eager to put the matter behind them, the person in charge at the Mounted Police might also be keen to get rid of Carlo Borbo.
Yet, using the Mounted Police’s network of informants to gather intelligence was one thing, but directly relying on their resources to execute the plan was another matter entirely.
The main enemy of the gangs was the Mounted Police; their defenses were aimed at them. If a third party was prepared to intervene, it wouldn’t necessarily be immediately apparent to them.
Carlo Borbo probably had no idea yet that he had offended a woman prison warden who seemingly had no connection to him; other gang members also knew virtually nothing about Aiden.
Aiden had the first-mover advantage unique to a third-party force, but if he relied too heavily on the Mounted Police’s resources, he would be voluntarily giving up that advantage.
The informants or undercover agents placed by the Mounted Police might have been suspected by the gangs, which were always on guard against the police. Relying entirely on them for the plan could instead alert the gang and spook them.
In the end, Aiden replied to Veronica, "Let’s wait for now. There might be a more suitable candidate for this."
"A more suitable candidate?" Veronica was taken aback.
Just then, a knock sounded on the office door.
"Come in."
As Aiden gave the cue, the door to the office opened, and prison guard Isabella walked in. She exchanged a glance with Veronica, then saluted Aiden to report, "Warden, the person you mentioned to me before has come to apply for a visit today."
"Visitor for prisoner 3271?"
"Yes."
Speak of the devil!
Aiden immediately stood up from his seat, "Good, let him go to the visiting room. I’ll see him first, and after our meeting you notify prisoner 3271."
"Understood."
A few minutes later, Aiden arrived at the visiting room.
Across the glass barrier, on the other end of the room, sat the scar-faced gang youth who had visited Slyne in prison one week ago.
Today marked the first day of Slyne’s release from solitary confinement. Aiden had previously informed the guards on duty at the visitor reception to notify him immediately if someone claiming to be Slyne’s nephew applied for a visit with prisoner 3271.
The moment the youth saw Aiden, he visibly tensed up, but did not show much surprise.
Clearly, he had been somewhat prepared for Aiden to come and see him.
"I won’t beat around the bush, that letter was written by you, wasn’t it?" Aiden stood hands behind his back, getting straight to the point.
After a long silence, the youth, with a grim face, nodded.
"These past few days, I did a bit of investigation, which corroborated your claims to some extent," Aiden spoke slowly, "But writing to me is pointless. Prisoner 3271 has become a vengeance spirit; she won’t listen to the truth. Even if she believed it, she wouldn’t be able to take revenge."
The youth silently lowered his eyes.
"Was it Carlo who led prisoner 3271 to this state?"
Aiden asked again. After questioning Camilla, he had taken the opportunity to talk with Slyne and confirmed that the person who had tricked Slyne out of her compensation money and referred her to a necromancer was indeed Carlo.
The youth nodded silently again.
"So are you still under Carlo Bollpo?" Aiden asked further.
The youth, head down, did not respond.
"Continuing to work for the man who brought your own family to ruin, don’t you feel any remorse?" Aiden pressed on.
"I... I have no choice," the youth replied in a dejected voice.
Aiden watched the youth, refraining from further sarcasm.
For someone like Camilla, who was already in an abnormal environment, believing that a few words of admonition could make them reform was arrogance.
The youth being in a gang and sending out that whistleblowing letter might have already been his greatest effort.
"You might not have had a choice before, but now you have an opportunity," Aiden suddenly stated, "You have a chance to bring down the officer responsible for your brother’s death."
The youth looked up, staring at Aiden with a puzzled expression.
"I have some connections with the Mounted Police. Listen carefully, this is the intel I just got from an undercover agent of the Mounted Police..." Aiden leaned slightly forward, moving closer to the voice transmission hole in the glass wall, and whispered mysteriously, "Carlo Bollpo is plotting to assassinate the leader of the Skull Gang, preparing to seize power in the chaos."
