Chapter 271: Before You Forgot Me [10]
[7 Years After Evana’s Fall]
In a span of just 7 years, the city that once shone was reduced to nothing but rubbles and corpses.
After the rebels declared Queen Anise the traitor and sole responsible for everything, a massive civil war occurred.
The nobles in hunger for power started hunting others.
Without law and order, the people of higher class became the absolute power holders.
All the remaining resources went to their houses.
But even so, everything had limits.
Slowly, the common citizens felt it unbearable to tolerate them anymore.
A rally occurred with the sole purpose of overthrowing the aristocrats. And soon enough, they succeeded.
The city became free from politics, and a new Evana was born where the entire city had no governor.
A wealth redistribution took place, and everyone got fair shares of everything which remained.
They demanded it themselves. With the remaining resources, the city could go on for another twenty five years. Surely by then, someone from outside would save them. That’s what they all thought.
But even after all of that, the people of Evana blamed everything on their previous monarch. Because of her bringing in those outsiders, they became like this.
The search for them had never stopped, and no one till now had found them.
Rumours spread that they ran away from the city to the outside world, abandoning them.
Rage began to erupt even more. With resources getting depleted every passing hour, everyone started to look at others as foes.
Thievery and murders became very common.
The number of citizens reduced to below five hundred by today.
[Time: 02:30 PM]
It was past afternoon. The city sky was covered with dark clouds and smog as usual.
When was the last time the sun rays hit the ground?
Nobody honestly remembered.
"All clear." Cyan gestured to Will who was behind him.
Both equipped with blades as well as firearms ran across the street.
There was no one on the streets in sight, but still Cyan had made the order to pass cautiously.
As Cyan was the general head of information and war, Will had to follow his orders.
In just a span of seven years, Cyan had advanced to three stars of Ascendant rank with a Yellow Core. And he became a two star stage six weapon master in swordmanship and a three star stage four weapon master in firearms.
It was not an easy growth for him either. After training under Irene and Will himself day and night, Cyan eventually reached this stage.
He was just two stars away from a white mana core, but even so he was not satisfied.
Over the past seven years he had aged as well. He looked up at the sky while dashing inside the fallen building.
He is twenty four years old. That was his age right now. At this point even his childhood friend Maria had already graduated from Eclipse, or heck even gotten a job or maybe even gotten married.
Did she even try searching for him?
Knowing her, she must have done it too. And not only her, but the others as well.
Especially for Leon. He was at that point a national asset as the only confirmed light affinity holder. Both his sisters and even Princess Eula must have made a search for him as well.
But they could not reach this place no matter how much they tried.
Keeping his steps carefully on the stones and timbers, Cyan climbed the building.
The building they were climbing was located at the centre of Evana where Dreamweaver descended and where Ethan and others had died.
It was the same place where Leon had frozen the Calamity.
"Someone is coming." Will noticed.
Cyan looked to the right and saw a few patrol vans in rusty dented bodies passing down the road.
They waited for them to pass by.
"All good."
After checking one more time they kept up the climbing till they reached the half broken terrace.
The building was half fallen from one side, but even so it was the tallest building Evana had. And from the terrace here one could see the entirety of Evana in one angle view.
Will and Cyan had stopped at the corner to check before proceeding further.
The city looked dark with luminescent bulbs being the only source of light coming from a few occupied buildings. Other than that, the roads were being patrolled by rebel groups.
"Do you think we can save this place?"
Will asked Cyan as he looked at the scene.
Cyan raised one of his hands and from his coat’s pocket took out a cigar and lit it with his fingertips.
"Fuuuu..." He sighed as he smoked.
"Dr. Anise has made some progress analyzing the wavelength produced by the time devices that Priest Noel and Ethan carried. Those devices are linked to the Akashic Record. She believes she can use that connection to establish communication with the outside world. If she succeeds, we just have to get someone out there to hear us."
He puffed another smoke into the air.
Will listened and asked.
"Do you still think we can trust those Calamity tower heads? They are the strongest as per you explained. They are able to communicate with the literal Calamities. Can’t they ask them to help us?"
It was a well thought and valid question.
If a Calamity Tower Head such as Veronica Valentine cared for her little brother, she must have at some point asked the Goddess Silvermoon for help to guide them a way here. But still, it had been seven years and none of them had arrived.
"There must be something going on outside." Cyan said quietly.
Something much bigger than Evana must be what they are dealing with. Cyan was not sure, but he was certain that Leon’s sister would not abandon him here.
"Fuuuu..."
Will looked at him.
"You should quit smoking."
Cyan turned and said.
"Nah. What would be the point of that? The atmosphere here is much worse than the smoke coming out from my cigar."
Will rolled his eyes.
"Whatever. We should leave." Cyan said.
Will nodded. "Yeah. You enter the code. I will keep an eye on the road."
Cyan nodded and went to the other side of the terrace.
He took out something metallic from his coat and waved it three times in the air in a precise manner.
The air vibrated and a zip like distorted space opened up.
