Chapter 99: The Final Day
As Alen had taken his little revenge, all in the name of helping to lessen L’s guilt, things finally settled down.
Now, as everything had returned to normal, Alen then looked at Ravena.
"Hey little weapon, go back inside me. I don’t have more mana to waste on you..."
Because Alen had bonded with the weapon, he was now required to feed her continuous mana just to manifest her physical form in the outside world. She was like a walking, expensive girl who would constantly make him pay just to stay beside him. Since Alen needed to preserve his mana reserves for the trial, he could not afford to waste it on keeping her summoned.
"No! I feel bored staying inside you. It is not like you are even letting me see your memories for enjoyment. I could have passed the time by doing that, but you aren’t even letting me..."
"You also promised to give me freedom, don’t you remember? I will not go back in there, hmph!"
Alen looked at her, his eyes twitching slightly at her stubborn words. He remembered that he did indeed say that earlier. He tried to calm down his mind and sighed.
"Okay, listen. If you go back right now, then after we reach the real world again, I will let you roam around. Now, is that okay?..."
Ravena pouted a little at his negotiation tactics, but she eventually agreed after he said that he would let her roam freely later.
"Fine, I will go..."
She looked over at L and smiled playfully.
"Bye-bye, princess..."
She said those parting words and dissolved into crimson light particles, absorbing safely back inside Alen’s body.
L sweated nervously at her specific words. He didn’t meet Alen’s eyes, trying his best to act as casual as possible.
Alen looked confused for a moment, but he quickly dismissed his thoughts. He didn’t consider her cryptic words worth wasting his time over.
"So, tell me about this trial and everything you know..."
Alen looked at the remaining time displayed on the system interface. There was only one day left to finish the trial. With so little time remaining, they had to hurry, and he needed to know everything about this ruined place as soon as possible.
L looked at him and stood up from the ground, carefully adjusting his clothes. The ache in his stomach was long gone. Because Alen didn’t use actual mana to hurt him, his body is completely fine. Since he had fought many Awakeners in the past, he was quite used to feeling physical pain and knew how to stand up through it. So, a simple punch was no big deal for him.
"Hmph... As you may already know, the trial has a duration of seven days, and the main quest is to ’Kill the Ghost of the Dark Temple’. I tried hunting it for five whole days, but I still have not found any clue about its location. Now only one day remains, but I don’t have any idea how to find it. There isn’t even a temple anywhere around the city. At this rate, the time limit is going to expire before we can solve the objective..."
Alen stared at him with a confused expression as a frown formed on his face.
"Wait—what did you just say? The quest was only for two days, wasn’t it?..."
L blinked in surprise at his confused question.
"No... I received the quest six days ago, and it was a seven-day trial. After arriving here, I was alone in this place. I killed several monsters and survived in the ruined city, but unfortunately, I did not find a single clue about that ghost..."
Alen stared at him, rendered speechless.
"Wait, my system notification said my trial was just two days..."
He looked up toward the clouded sky far above them. Hiding somewhere behind those thick clouds, there was a dimensional gate located at a massive height.
"So... does that mean I was falling through the sky for five whole days? How can that even be possible?!"
L looked at him, carefully observing his shocked expression.
"Maybe the space-time fabric up in the sky is fundamentally different from the ground. That is why it took you so long to land down here, even though from your perspective it might have just taken a few minutes... It seems you were transported here through a distorted dimensional gate..."
L looked at Alen, trying to analyze his bizarre situation. Since it was the very first time he had seen someone appear right in the middle of an ongoing trial, it made him feel quite interested in this silver-haired guy.
"So, let us get back to the main discussion. How should we go about finding the ghost monster? I have no other clues except what I already told you..."
Alen folded his arms, deep in thought.
"For now, let us leave this specific place first. It is not like we are going to find that elusive ghost just sitting around here..."
L nodded in agreement.
Alen then stretched his stiff body. He summoned a fresh shirt and jacket from his inventory to wear. He had brought these spare clothes along with the outfits he bought from the mall he had visited recently in the real world in the blue city.
As Alen took off his torn shirt and threw it away, he revealed his flawless skin, with only the diagonal scar visible across his chest. He started to put on his new clothes.
While changing, he noticed that L had started to act a little weird. L’s eyes were boring into the ground as if he desperately wanted to dig a hole and hide inside it. He seemed to be actively avoiding looking at Alen, and for some reason, his face had turned slightly red.
Alen easily dismissed L’s weird demeanor. He assumed the guy was just feeling flushed from the radiating warmth of the nearby bonfire.
Alen then finished putting on his clothes. The outfit was quite similar to what he had worn earlier: a stylish white jacket over a dark black shirt, paired with stylish black pants.
Alen then used basic water magic to wash the grime off his face, followed by gentle breeze of wind magic to dry his wet skin. As he adjusted his messy silver hair, he finally looked back at L with a calm expression.
"Shall we go?..."
L snapped out of his daze, startled a little bit, and nodded his head immediately.
"Yeah..."
Both Alen and L started to walk out of the old, crumbling building with the open ceiling. They navigated out into the dark, ruined streets, their minds focused on finding the Ghost.
