Chapter 122: Chapter 122 - Leaving
"You won’t be kind enough to speak of the reward now? Or give me a small early reward to please me right this moment?" Cassian asked, nudging Lilith closer to his chest.
Lilith smiled as she peered down at him. "You mustn’t get too greedy when it comes to asking for rewards. I might grow tired of it and give you none. Let this satisfy you," she said, leaning down to place a kiss upon his cheek.
"That is hardly enough," Cassian murmured, wanting more.
"I am not well, remember? You said that I must be still until the doctor thinks I am better, so I shouldn’t overwork myself. That is all you have been telling me of late, so now it is time that you eat your words," Lilith said, though she still planted another kiss on his cheek, teasing him with her restraint.
"You are cruel," Cassian said, savouring the warmth of her lips against his skin.
"And yet, you still love me. I should see myself as so wonderful to have a man follow me through death. Have you searched for answers on why it happened?" Lilith asked, attempting to leave Cassian’s lap, only to find herself caged by his arms.
"I haven’t found anything. Not even other stories of it happening to anyone else. I would not like to speak of it to anyone to avoid being labelled a madman," Cassian admitted.
"How unfortunate, since that is what many already think of you for storming the castle out of the blue. When are you going to release me? I want to go sit by the window," Lilith said, playfully poking at his cheek.
"In a moment. Let me hold you a little longer," Cassian said, tightening his hold. "It is not so often that you let me hold you like this. You are in a good mood, so I must enjoy it while it lasts."
"Well, capturing the people who tormented me for years will always place me in a good mood. You must enjoy it," Lilith said, agreeing with him. "Soon, there won’t be anyone left to bring on this good feeling."
"The more I look at you, the more I feel swayed to give you a little reward now," Lilith teased, but before she could reveal what it was, there came a knock at the door. "There it is. There is always a distraction to spoil the moment."
"Ignore it," Cassian said, slipping his hand to her lower back. "It is not important. They couldn’t have caught her when they just left."
Lilith covered Cassian’s mouth with her right hand. "We are on a hunt for a woman who can start another war. You must get up and see what news the person outside our chamber brings. If you don’t, the only reward you shall get is sleeping alone."
"Release me," Lilith ordered.
Cassian released her with a sigh. He set her down gently on the bed to his left and stood to open the door.
When the door opened, Cassian’s annoyance grew as it wasn’t a soldier who had come to speak.
"Mother," Cassian greeted, as Diana stood before him.
Diana patted his cheek with maternal affection. "Don’t look so disappointed to see your mother. I must speak to you right now. Before you ask, it cannot wait, since you are sending me back with the Mortimers."
"It is not a good time," Cassian said.
"Why not? You are all dressed, and I don’t hear Lilith calling for you. I must get this off my chest before I overthink it," Diana said, desperate to speak about Gerald. "Lilith may hear it. I won’t feel good packing without saying what I must."
"Come inside," Cassian said, holding the door open.
Diana entered and curtsied. "Your Majesty."
"Lady Diana. After the gathering, I didn’t think I would see you so soon. Have you come to share comments about the gathering?" Lilith asked, looking to Cassian for answers. She had wanted to see a soldier, not Diana.
"You did well with the gathering, so I don’t have any comments to bring. I have come to speak about a matter which involves you both. I have come to ask that I may take Gerald away with me," Diana requested. She couldn’t leave without him.
Diana noticed Lilith wasn’t surprised at the mention of Gerald. "You know about our relationship already."
"It came as a surprise to me, but it makes sense why he is always missing. You may take him. I haven’t had him at my side for long enough to care," Lilith said, uninterested in keeping Gerald. "My guard shall soon return."
"You disturbed us to ask for him? You are not set to leave today, so why come now?" Cassian asked, bothered that the moment was spoiled by news he already knew.
"Before I stop sneaking around with him, I wanted to speak to you. I hope you do not think that I have been betraying your father. This didn’t start right away after your father died, nor did it start before. I was always faithful to your father," Diana promised.
"Mother, there wasn’t a moment when I thought you weren’t loyal to your husband. Time has passed. It was fine for you to move on and find love again. I didn’t expect you to sit around alone while life goes on. Enjoy this new love," Cassian advised Diana.
"You are not upset? Truly?" Diana asked, relief flooding her expression.
"No. My only concern is that you are happy. You lost your husband and faced his brother trying to court you. I think it is long overdue for you to be happy. I know Gerald quite well, so it is easy to accept him. Take him with you and don’t worry," Cassian said.
Diana hugged him tightly. All her worries went away now that she knew he was truly fine with it.
"We shall leave in two days to return to my home. The estate isn’t my home now," Diana said, letting go of Cassian.
"If you wait a while longer, you might be able to see Athena hang," Lilith spoke up.
"You have found her?" Diana asked, surprised. "While I am thankful you are inviting me to stay, I would rather be alone with Gerald than remain to see Athena killed."
"Very well. Cassian’s sibling won’t come sooner if you stay here," Lilith said, teasing Cassian with a sly smile.
"Lilith," Cassian sighed. "Ignore her, mother."
"I must, since I don’t want any more children at this age. Excuse me," Diana said with a curtsy. She needed to leave before Lilith made too many plans for her.
