Chapter 115: Chapter 115 - Scare
"A pity. I would like to see you chained up. Aren’t you the least bit curious about what would happen afterwards?" Lilith questioned, her voice lilting with mischief as she tilted her chin up to Cassian.
"I am not the least bit curious. Would you allow me to chain you?" Cassian asked in jest, though his gaze lingered on her with a flicker of intrigue.
"If you asked nicely," Lilith answered, her lips curving into a sly smile.
"Can I chain you, Lilith?" Cassian asked in a polite tone.
Lilith chuckled. "How foolish of you to think I was being honest. If you were married to me before, then why can’t you tell when I am lying?"
"You do it so easily that it is hard to keep up with them. That, and I prefer to humour. I’ve learned there is no point in arguing with you," Cassian replied.
"Well, you certainly learned fast, which makes you tolerable. If you don’t mind, I would prefer to have our dinner in our chamber tonight. While you are tolerable, some of your family is not. I’ve had enough of crowds for the day," Lilith said, watching the servants walk by.
"You could simply say that you want to spend time with me. I notice that you have been getting far closer to me," Cassian said, proving his point by glancing down at where Lilith’s hand clung to him with possession.
"You’re my lucky charm. It wouldn’t be wise of me not to hold onto you. You know, the more you point out how close I have become to you, the less I will stay close. Haven’t you learned that by now?" Lilith asked.
"I have, but I felt inclined to point it out. I’ll keep feeding your lies that you only cling to me because I am lucky to you," Cassian said, turning his gaze away from Lilith.
"There isn’t any love between us," Lilith said, saving Cassian from nurturing fragile hopes.
"I am well aware, but I enjoy that you hold some interest in me. That is enough to satisfy me for now," Cassian spoke with honesty.
"You’re somewhat pathetic being a hopeless romantic, but I can’t ignore that when it comes to facing other matters, I see why we would be a match. I’m a bit excited from what occurred tonight, so you might find yourself luckier," Lilith said in a flirtatious tone.
"Do not tempt me, Lilith," Cassian responded with restrained desire.
"This will only make me want to tempt you more. Have you handled the matter about the orphans? I don’t want them to suffer more than they already have. I am going to select a special group of ladies to care for the children," Lilith declared.
"The children are being removed from where they were sent. I’ve dispatched soldiers to protect them. You’ll need to be very careful about who you send so they won’t be mistreated again."
"I will be careful. I now wish that we had hung the people who mistreated them. Put hooks through their lips and hang them," Lilith said, her imagination conjuring the grotesque sight. "We must handle this matter carefully to stop anyone else from doing it again."
"I’m sure you’ve sent a message by scaring the wives senseless, but I will keep watching over this matter. You should focus on getting the castle in order and the ladies," Cassian suggested.
"I can do so much more. I have noticed that one of my guards always seems to be missing. I believe his name is Gerald," Lilith said, her curiosity piqued. "Have you given him some special task to be elsewhere at times?"
"No. He should be focused on guarding you, but his attention is split elsewhere. Since I can’t trust him not to get distracted, I will remove him and place another at your side. I’ll speak to him at a later time," Cassian said, irritation flashing in his eyes at Gerald’s negligence.
"What could he possibly be distracted by?" Lilith wondered.
"My mother," Cassian said, the words tasting bitter as they left his mouth.
Lilith stopped walking, her eyes widening as she looked up at him. "My guard is distracted by your mother? Diana? Diana Mortimer? This is too much," she said, covering her mouth with her hand as laughter started.
"It is not news for you to share with the castle or ladies," Cassian instructed Lilith.
"I don’t intend to spread it to anyone. That would only ruin it for me. I would never have thought that Diana would be sneaking around with one of my guards. I hope that he distracts her well," Lilith said, her amusement bubbling over.
"I don’t want to hear of it," Cassian muttered.
"You don’t want to hear about your mother and a man who served you? I’m almost tempted to let her stay so you can be tormented," Lilith said, enjoying his discomfort. "You mustn’t get in the way of your mother’s love affair."
Cassian sighed, regretting ever revealing the truth.
"You might be able to have a little sibling if you don’t intrude-"
"Lilith," Cassian cut in.
"Surely, you don’t think your mother has stopped the act of showing love. You mustn’t be a prude. Don’t tell me that at a certain age, you won’t attempt to touch me? I want to be like your mother," Lilith said, her words cruelly playful, twisting the knife deeper.
Despite his annoyance, Cassian found himself charmed by her laughter. When her laughter ceased, he felt a sudden dread. Looking to his right, he realised she appeared to be in pain.
Lilith’s left hand clutched her chest, her face twisted from the pain.
"Lilith!" Cassian called out, panic surging through him. "Talk to me. What hurts?" His voice cracked as he examined her, his hands hovering helplessly.
Lilith drew in deep breaths, her chest rising and falling as the pain went away. "It seems I excited myself a bit too much. That is all," she said, brushing the moment aside.
This wasn’t the first time she had felt this way. She knew if she waited and breathed deeply, the pain would fade.
"No. We are going to see a doctor now," Cassian said, his heart pounding with fear. He would not take any chances as he could not bear the thought of losing her.
