Chapter 77: Lame excuses.

EVA.

I almost scoffed the moment the words left his mouth.

’It’s you I love.’

The statement hung in the air between us, sounding almost laughable now. Maybe once upon a time, I would have believed him without hesitation.

Maybe I would have melted at those words and held onto them like they meant everything.

But not anymore, not after everything I had learned and not after finally opening my eyes—Men were truly scum.

The thought crossed my mind bitterly as I stared at him.

Because just look at him, standing there so confidently, lying straight through his teeth while looking directly into my eyes as though sincerity alone could erase the truth.

I wondered briefly if he would still keep up this ridiculous act if I decided to push him harder.

If I cornered him with the truth he was desperately trying to avoid.

"Then prove it to me," I said finally.

My voice remained calm, but firm enough that there was no mistaking my seriousness.

I paused deliberately before adding the next words. "I heard she is asking for a divorce... give it to her."

The moment the words left my mouth, Alex froze instantly.

Completely.

His expression shifted so quickly it almost made me laugh—there it was, that hesitation, that silence and that inability to answer immediately.

Because despite everything he had just claimed....he still wanted her.

And honestly?

I didn’t care.

Not emotionally, at least, but Ella returning right now would completely ruin my plans.

That woman needed to stay exactly where she was for the time being.

Far away.

Out of the picture.

Although deep down, I knew she would not last very long here anyway.

"How did you know about that?" Alex suddenly asked, finally snapping out of his earlier frozen state.

His voice was sharper now, more controlled—but the shift in his expression was even more noticeable.

His eyes darkened immediately.

Suspicion crept in slowly, tightening his features as though he was trying to read something behind my words that was not even there.

"Are you watching me?" he added, his tone dropping slightly as he studied me carefully.

I almost laughed at that, because the question itself was ridiculous.

Was this his way of avoiding the real issue?

Of twisting the conversation just enough to make it seem like I was the one in the wrong instead?

Like I was the one crossing boundaries?

Typical.

Men always did that when they were cornered.

"I am not, Alex," I replied immediately, my irritation slipping through despite my attempt to stay composed.

I rolled my eyes lightly before turning my face away from him completely, as though the conversation itself had already lost its importance to me.

"It’s just that things do not stay hidden under the sun for too long," I added coolly.

My voice came out colder this time, and sharper, because honestly, I was already getting tired of his games.

And if he thought I was going to start defending myself over something so obvious, then he clearly did not know me well enough. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"What do you mean?" Alex asked sternly, his brows pulling together immediately as his sharp gaze locked onto mine.

The tension in his voice only made me want to push further.

"Come on," I said casually, clicking my tongue lightly as though the answer should have been obvious already. "That is the most trending topic among the wolves in the Pack mansion." I tilted my head slightly before adding, "Don’t tell me you haven’t heard it."

The moment the words settled, Alex’s fists clenched tightly at his sides. So tightly that his knuckles slowly turned white.

Interesting.

He was definitely affected by this more than he wanted to admit.

"So, you are going to divorce her, right?" I asked calmly, keeping my face completely devoid of emotion as I watched him carefully. "I mean, you already rejected her," I continued smoothly. "Divorcing her should not really be an issue."

Honestly, I was enjoying every reaction I was getting from him—every flicker of discomfort, and every moment of hesitation.

Because despite how composed he was trying to appear, his body was betraying him completely.

"It is just a divorce, Eva..." Alex finally said after a while, trying to sound casual as he waved the topic away dismissively. "There is no need to take it seriously."

Just a divorce?

The thought almost made me laugh internally.

If it was truly "just a divorce," then why was he struggling so hard with it?

Why hadn’t he signed the papers already?

Why did he look this tense discussing it?

Clearly, he did not want to let her go.

"The divorce has already been brought to court," he continued after a brief pause. "We just need to let them decide."

His tone remained controlled, but I noticed the slight tension in his jaw immediately.

"I mean, some clauses in the divorce papers need to be amended," he added quickly. "That is the reason I haven’t signed it yet."

I stared at him for a second before slowly shaking my head in disbelief.

What a lame excuse.

Honestly, did he think I was stupid enough to believe that?

He was an Alpha.

If he truly wanted the divorce finalized, nothing could stop him.

I mean absolutely nothing.

He could easily call his lawyer over, draft another set of papers, sign them immediately, and send them to Ella to do the same.

Simple and clean.

And both sides would finally be free from each other.

But instead, he kept delaying it and making lame excuses. Holding onto something he clearly refused to admit.

"Alright, Alex," I said finally, softening my voice slightly as I walked over and sat down on the couch. "I trust you."

But internally, my thoughts were far colder.

As I watched him slowly get lost in his own thoughts again, one thing became painfully clear to me.

No matter what happened...I had to make sure this divorce pulled through.
