Chapter 47: Under the rain
The more she tried to figure him out, the bigger the puzzle he was. What’s even crazier is why she even bothered with something that had absolutely nothing to do with her.
The cold night breeze blew across her skin. Kaden was still lying flat on the grass, his arms crossed under his head. The sky was clear tonight but it held none of his attention he was quietly watching the figure sitting in front of him like some puzzle he couldn’t crack either
Yuki’s attention was on the horizon, she was also lost in her thoughts she didn’t feel the gaze burning into her bad. The cold wind really did help sober her..
It felt peaceful and honestly, she needed this after all the crazy things that had happened to her. After a while, she spoke again. "How is your injury?" She didn’t know why she brought it up. Maybe the silence was starting to make her uncomfortable.
Kaden was startled for a moment. He didn’t expect it. The question stirred something in him he couldn’t explain or rather accept. He sat up, their shoulders almost touching. "Almost gone now. My healing is fast even for a werewolf standard.." he explained. "Well, that’s if the wound isn’t poisoned."
Yuki nodded then slowly stood. "I think my head is clear enough now. We should head back." She said as if the sky had heard her. The head clouds which had been looming over them rumbled with a deafening roar. Lighting flashed in the background.
A drop of rain fell on her hand followed by another. It wasn’t heavy yet but it would be soon. Kaden didn’t say anything and stood up.
"We might not make it back before the downpour. " he casually mentioned crossing his legs over the bike as he got settled on it. The engine rumbled to life..
Yuki grabbed the helmet and fastened it on her. She climbed over the bike, the same dilemma she faced earlier her hand hovered once more.
"This bike is fast you might slip," he said it was not a direct permission but it helped lessen the awkwardness. Her hand wrapped over his waist. Kaden turned the handle.
"Close the helmet and hold on tight this ride would be bumper." He explained. "Don’t want you to accidentally die in my custody. " Her grip tightened. The memories from the first ride were still fresh in her mind.
She wasn’t taking his warning for granted.
Kaden’s bike tore through the night running down the mountain roads. He took a shortcut away from the smooth paved road and as he promised it was bumpier.
The heavy clouds broke and raindrops started drumming on them relentlessly. The wind and force from the cold rain made her hold onto his warm body for her dear life.
She clung for survival and nothing more she had reminded herself. By the time the bike arrived at the driveway of the Alpha’s residential building, they were soaked to the bone and she was shaking like a fly.
Kaden’s bike stopped just in time as a row of cars drove into the driveway. The bright headlights flashed on them as the tyres tore through the wet road
His eyes narrowed recognising the convoy. The middle car doors opened and the driver stepped out with an umbrella
.
Curious Yuki glanced over just in time to see two tall figures step out of the car under the shade of the umbrella held by the driver. It was Killian and Kieran who had just returned after a long day at the office.
Yuki was stunned that they were returning this late. She was dumbfounded by the scene and she completely forgot she was still on Kaden’s bike holding onto him. The rain platters around them. The brothers stopped at once and just stared their gaze locked on Kaden and Yuki
The silence was suffocating paralysing Yuki. Even the guards accompanying them were stunned that the alphas stopped in the rain.
Kaden’s expression remained impassive, his grip tightened on the handle. "Did your legs forget how to walk?" Kaden asked Yuki, snapping her from her daze. She froze.
"Huh.." she blurted..
Kaden glanced over his shoulder. His wet hair was sticking to his face. "Get off Yuki," he said and it finally occurred to her she should have gotten off ages ago. She pulled back her hand like he was radioactive and quickly got off the bike so fast she slipped and fell into a small puddle
A wave of humiliation hit her. No one spoke. Yuki gathered her last courage and pulled off the helmet. She placed it on the bike then sprinted off running into the building. The entire time she felt several gazes locked on her every movement until she was out of sight.
Then she could finally breathe. Her fist clenched, they were upset that she rode with Kaden and held onto him. It wasn’t like she had much of a chance.
After Yuki’s figure disappeared through the doors, Kaden’s voice cut through the private mind link the triplet shared, keeping the conversation private.
’ Are you just going to stare? My face isn’t that different from yours to gain such attention.’ He sneered. His brothers didn’t reply immediately. Killian’s mind connected with everyone around them, he immediately cleared the area.
Soon it was just the brothers. Killian and Kieran were holding their umbrellas with the rain pounding around them. Kaden stepped off his bike which he was meant to send to the garage and held his helmet by his side..
He tilted his head, his jaw rolled. Their silence was starting to annoy him. He sighed then spoke out loud. "Since you’re standing under the rain so much, let me get out of your way." He sarcastically said.
The moment he took his first step Killian’s voice stopped him cold. "Don’t you owe us an explanation?" he stated. Kaden’s grip on the helmet tightened.
"Explanation about what brother?!" He asked, dragging his words.
Kieran stepped from behind Killian carrying that calm scholarly presence around him. Even after hours of meetings and brainstorming not even a hair strand was out of place. He was as impeccable as always. "First we can start with your earlier attitude. You stormed off, blocked everyone and abandoned your duties. You had a security meeting with the gamma and the regional security generals and it had to be postponed." Kieran stated.
