Chapter 188: Episode 188.

Mitchell didn’t bother knocking. She had come directly to Beta Kole’s estate today. She doesn’t want to negotiate anymore.

The door slammed against the wall hard enough that both occupants looked up. She wasn’t coming here to beg anymore.

The scent of old wood and burning candles filled the room.

Beta Kole sat in his usual chair near the fireplace, relaxed and composed as though he hadn’t spent months pulling strings around her life.

Hannah stood beside the table with her arms folded, with her expression sharp as she watched and waited.

Mitchell stopped in the center of the room. Her hands trembled from fury. The same fury she’d been carrying since leaving Aire’s room the day Aire stuck her.

That day, she had laughed because she saw how the disappointment settled into the eyes of the only friend she’d ever truly had, and it almost ripped her apart at the spot, but she couldn’t cry.

Instead she laughed.

"Where is my mother?" She yelled, staring straight into Beta Kole’s eyes with fury. Her temperature had risen now, and she wouldn’t care about getting physical with him.

Hannah’s expression shifted slightly, and then her eyes mocked Mitchell’s fury.

"Sit down." Hanah ordered.

"No." Mitchell refused instantly.

Hannah’s eyes narrowed.

Mitchell took a step forward. "Where is she?"

"We have more important matters to discuss."

Mitchell frowned. "Tell me that one more time, and I can’t promise to be respectful," she warned politely.

Hannah stiffened. "Mitchell?"

"My mother." Mitchell’s voice sharpened. "Where is she?"

For a moment nobody spoke.

Hannah exhaled sharply then, breaking the silence. "Tell us what happened with Aire first." She demanded.

Mitchell stared at her. Because surely she hadn’t heard correctly. After everything, after weeks of promises, after months of manipulation, and after all the information she’d handed over, Hannah’s first concern was still Aire.

Cold fury settled inside Mitchell’s chest.

"Tell me where my mother is." Mitchell pressed. "That’s the only conversation I came here for. I need to see her first, and make sure she’s alive."

The room went still.

Hannah blinked, and Beta Kole’s gaze sharpened slightly.

"Excuse me?" He finally spoke.

"You heard me." Mitchell folded her arms. "Where is my mother?"

Hannah’s expression hardened. "Watch your tone."

Mitchell almost enjoyed the shock that crossed Hannah’s face.

"Aire barely wants me around anymore." She opened up. The words hit harder than Mitchell expected. Saying them aloud made them real.

Hannah’s expression changed instantly.

Beta Kole’s eyes narrowed.

"You kept pushing." She paused briefly, waiting for any of them to speak. When they didn’t, she went on. "You kept asking for more."

She took a step forward, and her voice drooped. "You wanted information." She took another step forward towards Beta Kole. "You wanted details and you wanted access. I gave you that, but you ruined it all. Now she doesn’t trust me."

The room felt smaller.

"Congratulations." She added sarcastically. "Now, return my mother back to me."

Hannah looked furious.

Beta Kole looked thoughtful.

"Give me my mother." Mitchell repeated for the hundredth time, now panicking.

Hannah scoffed.

Mitchell’s voice dropped. "Or I tell Aire everything." She promised. "Return my mother to me now. The Alphas would not let this slide."

The room froze completely now.

Hannah exploded first. "You wouldn’t dare." She snarled. Her fingers turned ugly, as her claws fought to show themselves, and rip Mitchell apart for such a threat.

"Try me."

"You think she’d believe you?" Hannah’s chest heaved, but she managed to scoff, pretending to appear relaxed.

Mitchell smiled. She could see that riled Hannah up. The girl had always been without a brian. "Do you?"

That shut Hannah up. They both knew the answer. Aire would believe her.

Mitchell’s stomach twisted. She looked between them. "Where is she?"

They gave her no answer.

Hannah looked away just briefly.

Mitchell felt her pulse spike. Her eyes glistened, as she thought of every worse scenario these two wild beasts would have done. "Where is my mother?"

Beta Kole folded his hands. "Mitchell—"

"No." Her voice cracked with fear. She could see it in their eyes. Something had happened to her mother. "Where is she?"

Suddenly every conversation she’d had over the past months came rushing back. Wait, has her mother been dead all the while she obeyed their orders?

Mitchell took a step backward. Her chest tightened. "Why won’t you answer me?"

Neither of them spoke. That was when terror arrived.

They all stayed silent and suddenly, Hannah slammed both palms onto the table. "Do you know how much trouble she’s caused?"

Mitchell froze. Trouble? What does she mean? Her and her mother were perfectly on their own, in their little shelter when these two approached her with other guards, and seized her mother.

They took her mother at the spot, and no amount of struggling helped. They asked her with this absurd message she had carried on since.

And now, they said her mother had caused a lot of trouble? They were the trouble.

The room froze.

Mitchell’s heart stopped. Blood drained from her face.

"No." She whispered. The whisper barely existed. "You wouldn’t be so cruel, would you?"

Hannah looked away.

Mitchell’s breathing became uneven. She turned to Beta Kole. "I carried out every message you gave to... to me," she choked at her last words, her eyes wide with disbelief.

Beta Kole remained silent, which told her everything.

"I did nothing wrong to you and your family, and so did my mother."

Mitchell tried to rush towards him, but she couldn’t raise her feet. Rather, her knees wobbled greatly.

"What did you do?" She whimpered, trying to hold herself together. "Eve... everything... I’ve done.... Was it a waste? I hurt someone so pure."

Mitchell felt tears gathering when no one said a word to her. She felt her world tilting. Everything inside her was beginning to break.

"What did you do?"

Beta Kole’s gaze remained steady. "Some truths cannot be undone once discovered." He said so casually, like a man discussing the weather.

Mitchell stared at him.

For several seconds she couldn’t breathe. The room seemed to tilt sideways beneath her feet.

"I’ll kill you. I swear." The words escaped her lips before she could stop it.

Her eyes moved between Hannah and Beta Kole. Neither corrected her, or denied it. Neither even looked surprised by her reaction.

"You killed her." She openly accused now. Mitchell stumbled backward. "You killed her."

Hannah flinched at Mitchell’s tune.

The world narrowed for Mitchell, and she counted the months she spent betraying the only person who had ever shown her kindness while she went on believing her mother was alive somewhere.

"You used me."

Beta Kole sighed. "You were useful." He tossed the words at her.

Mitchell froze.

His expression and posture was relaxed with complete lack of remorse.

Mitchell lost it. "You monster!" She snarled. Her claws emerged instantly, and the rums of her eyes reddened.

Hannah straightened.

Beta Kole didn’t move. Mitchell lunged forward towards him. She suddenly needed to hurt something, and she’d be grateful if he killed her.

She barely crossed half the room when Beta Kole moved once, and fast. He moved faster than she expected.

His hand closed around her throat.

Mitchell hit the wall hard enough to crack the wood behind her. Air vanished from her lungs, and her feet left the ground.

Tears blurred her vision.

Beta Kole stared at her, disappointed.

"See?" he murmured.

Mitchell clawed at his wrist. He didn’t even notice.

"This is why Aire was always the superior choice."

The words struck harder than the wall had.

Mitchell stopped fighting for a second.

Beta Kole’s eyes hardened. "You allow emotion to make your decisions."

Mitchell hated him. She had never hated anyone this much.

Beta Kole released her.

She collapsed to the floor coughing. Before she could rise, guards entered the chamber. Four of them who had been waiting outside all along.

Mitchell’s stomach dropped.

"Take her." Beta Kole waved his dismissively.

Mitchell looked up sharply. "What?"

The guards approached.

Hannah folded her arms, with her chin raised up.

Mitchell scrambled backward. "Where is my mother, please." She sniffed now. "Please. At least, let me see her body."

No one answered.

Her heart pound painfully. "You can’t do this."

Beta Kole smiled softly at her. "Unfortunately, Mitchell, you’ve become unreliable."

The guards grabbed her arms.

Mitchell fought immediately. "Let me go!"

One guard nearly lost his grip. The second tightened his hold, and so did the rest.

Mitchell kicked, and struggled, but nothing mattered. She was roughly dragged toward the door.

"Let me go!"

Beta Kole watched her calmly. "You threatened to tell Aire."

Mitchell’s blood ran cold.

The door opened.

"You leave me very few options."

Fear swept through her for Aire. If they were willing to do this to her, and if they were willing to do this to her mother.

Then Aire was in far more danger than she had ever imagined.

Mitchell fought harder. "Our Luna will find out!" She yelled.

Beta Kole smiled again. The smile terrified her. "That," he said quietly, "is precisely what I intend to prevent."

The guards dragged her from the room and the door slammed shut behind her.
