......

The crowd remained silent after the wolf was dragged away.

Aire watched the man disappear into the sea of soldiers.

The hatred remained, but nobody spoke, or moved again.

Xanden opened the carriage door again. "That’s it." He insisted.

Aire looked at him. She shook her head at whatever he had to say.

"You’re going back to the castle." He insisted.

"No."

His jaw tightened.

Aire crossed her arms. "Don’t make it seem me say this repeatedly." She told him. "I’m staying going."

Xanden stared at her.

For several seconds neither moved.

The surrounding soldiers slowly began pretending they were not watching. Unfortunately, everyone was watching.

Nate rubbed a hand across his jaw.

Xanden pointed directly at the carriage. "You have seen enough." He pressed, clearly not backing down.

Aire glanced toward the villagers. She stared at the people being forced from homes they might never see again.

She looked back at him. "Have I?"

Xanden inhaled. His jaw flexed, then he released it. "Aire."

"Xanden."

Xanden blinked, taken a bit aback. He somehow hadn’t seen that coming. He didn’t know how to react to someone calling him out so firmly.

Nate winced. He knew that tone, and somehow, the sight before him amused him. Finally, someone would slap sense into his ’logically stupid brother’.

Xanden didn’t back down, unfortunately. "The people are upset."

Aire lashes fluttered. His reasoning caught her off guard. "They were upset before I arrived." She pointed out.

"Someone just threw a stone at your face."

Aire gracefully placed her palms before her, and lifted her chin softly. "I saw. The stone was directed at me."

Xanden nostrils flared, but not like the angry kind. Rather, he looked like he was contemplating locking her inside the carriage himself, or allowing her to stand on both feet once.

Nate finally stepped forward. "She wants to stay." He pointed out.

"Stay out of this, Nate." Xanden immediately snarled at him.

Nate frowned immediately. He gently looked around, and nodded, deciding not to cause a scene.

However, he didn’t back down without a threatening glare towards Xanden.

Aire watched between them for a second. Then she glanced around the vicinity again. She could see how everyone was trying, which was precisely why she wasn’t leaving.

She pointed toward the villagers. "If I leave now, what exactly do you think will happen?"

Neither male answered.

Aire continued. "They already believe this is my fault, and they already believe the Moon Goddess abandoned them because of me."

Nate and Xanden still remained silent.

Aire’s gaze hardened. "If I leave now, they will spend the next decade telling stories about how I hid behind castle walls while they fled their homes."

Nate’s mouth twitched. Unfortunately, she wasn’t wrong. If anything, they gave the wolves this much right. If only they had treated her right from the start, perhaps, the disrespect would never get to this.

Xanden cursed beneath his breath.

Aire stepped around him. "I’m staying." She said final, daft now to whatever he had to say again.

"Aire."

Aire didn’t respond to that because to her, the conversation ended there. She llwas not changing her mind.

Even if they hated her, she coukd tell they needed her.

Aire moved away from Nate, and Xanden, and quietly moved through the valley afterward. Alaric followed behind her, not crowding her.

A few wolves still looked at her with so much suspicion while others with outright hatred.

Aire ignored it. The bond betrayed her often enough. Nate could feel every small wound, and it was making him murderous.

Aire knew, so she stopped in her tracks, and turned to Nate. She didn’t need to use her words, as he followed behind her immediately.

Slowly, she was able to make sure no one gets themselves killed by Nate.

Hours went by with everyone taking care of their necessities, and making sure not a single one of them was left behind.

Aire sat under a shed, as Nate, Alaric, and a few guards oversaw the evacuation.

Suddenly, a commotion erupted near one of the wagons.

Aire turned immediately. A scream followed, then another. The crowd splitted, as a few wolves shifted to fix whatever was going on.

Aire was already moving.

Nate cursed under his breath. "Aire."

She ignored him.

The crowd parted reluctantly.

Aire slipped through before any of the Alphas could stop her, and found the source immediately.

A wagon wheel had collapsed. One of the support beams had snapped, and several supply crates had fallen.

A young girl sat trapped beneath part of the wreckage. She sat there, crying, and terrified.

She could be seven years old, maybe eight.

Blood ran down one side of her forehead. Aire dropped to her knees instantly.

"Move."

The nearby wolves froze.

Aire looked up. "Move." She commanded, now irritated.

They obeyed immediately. The authority in her voice surprised even her, and the villagers backed away.

Aire reached the child. "Hey."

The little girl hiccuped. Tears covered her face.

"It’s alright." Aire promised her.

"It hurts." She snuffed. "And I can’t shift yet."

"I know."

Aire carefully inspected the injury.

Nothing life threatening, but she couldn’t deny the pain. This would be very painful.

The girl’s leg was trapped beneath broken wood.

Aire glanced upward. "Nate." She called him.

He appeared immediately.

The sight of him always there still warmed something inside her. However, there was no time for that.

She snapped back to what was before her. "Lift it."

Nate lifted half the wagon one-handed, staring down at the girl beneath it.

Several villagers gasped softly, and a few went completely silent. The concept of Nate being mates with an illegitimate wolfless cursed girl haven’t matched with their reality, and now, this.

Aire ignored them.

The child was freed moments later.

Aire carefully examined the leg. Fortunately, it wasn’t broken, just twisted, and brushed.

Relief flooded through her.

The little girl burst into tears to Aire’s surprise. Aire pulled her close instinctively.

"It’s alright." She whispered into her ear.

The child clung to her, now crying openly.

Aire smoothed messy hair away from her face. "You’re alright." She prismied.

The mother appeared seconds later. The woman rushed forward, deeply unpleasantly by the sight before her.

Aire was holding her daughter, and at that moment, she didn’t see a Luna, but just a silver haired girl, and it disgusted her.

The moment became strange, and awkward.

The mother’s eyes filled with conflict.

Aire simply handed the child back without a word. If anything, she looked apologetic.

The woman accepted her daughter quickly. She didn’t say anything to Aire. However, she bowed to Nate.

"Thank you, Alpha." She thanked him, deeply grateful to him.

Aire rolled her eyes.

Nate looked at the woman, then at Aire. Then back at the woman.

A long awkward silence followed her thanks. She remained bowing, as she couldn’t stand straight unless he says so, and he hasn’t.

The woman shifted slightly beneath his stare.

Nate tilted his head faintly. "Are you mocking me?"

Aire immediately looked away.

The woman’s face changed at the sudden question.

Nate pointed lazily toward Aire without even looking at her. "The one beside me is the reason your child is out of there."

Aire groaned lightly.

The woman’s cheeks reddened.

Nate looked genuinely puzzled now, visibly messing with her head. "I wasn’t even there."

Aire pinched the bridge of her nose. "Please stop."

The woman looked horrified now. The worst thing that could happen to her right now was being asked to thank Aire.

She wouldn’t do that. Not after all the misfortune she had caused to the realm since she appeared.

Nate folded his arms.

The woman looked like she wanted the ground to swallow her whole.

"I_"

Nate straightened, cutting her off. "The one beside me is the reason your daughter was rescued quickly."

The woman flushed.

Nate folded his arms. "Fortunately for you, she doesn’t care whether you thank her."

Aire didn’t wait. She turned, and walked away, leaving the woman staring after her. Nate followed behind hern

All her life, she has never wanted gratitude and it would be the last thing she forces. If their lives would be so much better Hating her, then they shouldn’t stop having the best of their lives for her.
