Chapter 89: Elowen’s Test
Princess Elowen sat at her desk, surrounded by scrolls and reports, her silver-rose cloak draped over the back of her chair. She had been reviewing trade figures from the eastern provinces when one of her most trusted personal agents slipped into the room, carrying a sealed leather pouch.
The agent bowed low. "Your Highness. This arrived through back channels. It was meant for Lord Vesper, but my contact intercepted it before delivery. It concerns... northern hardliners."
Elowen’s sharp eyes narrowed. She broke the seal and unfolded the parchment. As she read, her expression shifted from curiosity to cold fury. The letter was from one of General Thorne’s lieutenants, offering Lord Vesper significant influence in a "restored pure-blood order" in exchange for sabotaging the triumvirate’s reforms from within. It included details of planned raids on border villages and promises of eastern territories if Vesper helped destabilize the current regime.
Elowen’s fingers tightened on the parchment. "Vesper has been courting the conservatives for weeks, but this... this is treason. He is actively working with the remnants of Magnus’s forces."
The agent nodded. "There is more, Your Highness. Vesper has been meeting secretly with several eastern houses that still resent the triumvirate’s shared rule. He is positioning himself as the leader of a ’return to tradition’ movement. If he succeeds, he could fracture the kingdom again."
Elowen leaned back, staring into the fire. For a long moment, she was silent. The flames reflected in her eyes as she weighed her options.
This was her test.
She could use this information to her advantage — leak it selectively, weaken the triplets further, and carve out even more power for herself in the resulting chaos. Or she could bring it to the council, exposing Vesper and solidifying her role as a loyal, if complicated, ally to the triumvirate. The choice would define the next Chapter of her life.
A soft knock sounded. Seren entered quietly, having sensed something through the bond. The changed queen’s presence filled the room with a unique blend of human warmth and authority of a wolf.
"Elowen," Seren said, closing the door behind her. "I felt tension through the bond. Is everything all right?"
Elowen looked up, studying her sister-by-bond. The dark fur along Seren’s shoulders shimmered in the firelight. There was no fear in Seren’s golden-flecked eyes, only steady concern.
Elowen held up the letter. "Lord Vesper is in secret communication with northern hardliners. He is plotting to undermine the reforms and destabilize the triumvirate. He offers them support in exchange for power in a ’pure-blood’ restoration."
Seren’s expression hardened. She crossed the room and took the parchment, scanning it quickly. "This is treason. If this is true, he is actively working against the kingdom we just bled to save."
Elowen watched her carefully. "It is true. My agent is reliable. The question is what I do with it. I could use this to weaken your position further. Create chaos. Carve out more authority for myself in the east while the triplets are distracted. Or... I could bring it to the council. Expose Vesper. Stand with you and my brothers."
Seren met her gaze directly. "Why are you telling me this instead of acting alone?"
Elowen’s smile was faint and self-aware. "Because I am tired of fighting for power in a broken system. The war showed me something I didn’t expect. When we fought together on the plains, even though it was temporary, the kingdom felt stronger. I have spent years resenting my brothers for the succession laws that excluded me because of my gender. But the same system that kept me from the throne also kept humans beneath us. Perhaps tearing it down and rebuilding is the only way I get what I truly want; real influence in a stable realm."
Seren sat across from her, the bond carrying a gentle pulse of cautious hope to her mates. "Then choose the kingdom, Elowen. Not just for power, but for something bigger than any of us. Vesper wants to drag us back to the old divisions. You have the chance to help build something better. Even if it means sharing power instead of claiming it all."
Elowen was silent for a long moment, staring into the fire. When she spoke again, her voice was quieter, more vulnerable than Seren had ever heard it.
"I have always believed that to win, I had to take everything. But watching you on the plains, a human who became wolf and united two species, made me question that. You didn’t take power. You earned it by becoming the bridge. Perhaps I can do the same. Not as sole ruler, but as a partner in something stronger."
Seren reached across the table, placing her hand over Elowen’s. "Then stand with us. Expose Vesper. Help us pass the reforms. Your competence is undeniable. The east needs your leadership. The kingdom needs your strength. But it needs your loyalty more."
Elowen looked at their joined hands, then met Seren’s eyes. A small, genuine smile touched her lips. "You are dangerous, changed sister. You make ambition feel small compared to duty. Very well. I will bring this evidence to the council tomorrow. I choose the kingdom. For now."
They both sat in silence for a moment, the fire crackling between them. The fragile alliance was deepening into something more complicated, not friendship, but mutual respect and shared purpose.
Later that night, in the royal chamber, Seren recounted the conversation to her mates. Kael growled softly at the mention of Vesper’s betrayal, but Aeron’s eyes gleamed with strategic approval.
"She chose the kingdom," Aeron said. "That is progress. Keeping her inside the system was the right gamble."
"Her ambition is still there, but it is tempered. For now. We watch her closely, but we also give her room to prove herself." Theron added as he poured wine for all of them.
Aeron pulled Seren onto his lap, his large hands gentle on her waist. "You convinced her, with your words and your example. You are changing more than just laws, our Queen. You are changing people."
Seren leaned into him, "I didn’t do much. Surprisingly, her mind was already made up by what she witnessed during the battle against Magnus. But we should remember, Vesper is dangerous. Exposing him will create new enemies. The reforms are already causing ripples. This will make the waves bigger."
Kael’s hand rested on her knee. "We face them together. As we always have."
Theron raised his glass. "To complicated allies and harder choices. May we navigate both wisely."
As the night deepened, the bond wrapped around Seren with love and strength. Elowen had made her choice.
She had chosen the kingdom over pure personal power.
