Chapter 81: Princess Elowen’s Gambit

Sunlight slanted through tall arched windows of the council chamber, illuminating the long table where the ruling council of Silvermoor now convened under the new triumvirate. Banners of the royal wolf sigil hung beside the silver-rose emblem that had recently been granted to Princess Elowen as a symbol of her formal inclusion.

Seren sat at the centre of the triangular arrangement of thrones. The bond hummed steadily with her mates; Kael’s protective warmth on her left, Aeron’s cool calculation on her right, Theron’s watchful shadows behind her. They had healed enough to appear strong, but the scars from the ravine and the plains were still visible in the way Kael favoured his shoulder and Aeron moved with careful precision.

Princess Elowen took her newly assigned seat at the long table for the first time. She wore deep indigo trimmed with silver, her posture elegant but commanding. The moment the session opened, she leaned forward, voice smooth and precise.

"Brothers. Sister-by-bond. The eastern provinces remain vulnerable after the war. Trade routes are disrupted, border forts understrength, and several noble houses are still wavering after their flirtation with Magnus’s remnants. I request formal authority over the eastern territories: military oversight, trade negotiations, and the right to appoint local governors. In return, I will ensure stability and increased revenue to the crown."

Lord Vesper, the conservative noble who had become the loudest voice against the reforms, snorted. "You ask for a kingdom within the kingdom, Princess. We have barely survived one war. Giving you unchecked power in the east is inviting another."

Elowen’s smile was thin and sharp. "Unchecked? Hardly. My actions would be subject to review by this council. But I proved my competence on the river plains. My forces turned the eastern flank and helped crush Magnus’s allies. The east trusts my banner more than it trusts a distant throne still healing from civil strife and foreign invasion."

Kael leaned forward, his deep voice rumbling. "You fought well, sister. No one denies that. But authority over the east means control of the silk routes and the grain stores. That is power, not just responsibility. What guarantee do we have that your ambition won’t turn that power against us?"

Elowen met his gaze without flinching. "The same guarantee you have from each other; blood and self-interest. A fractured kingdom serves no one, least of all me. I want a strong realm. I simply believe I am best suited to govern the east. You three have your strengths. Let me have mine."

Aeron’s voice cut in, calm and measured. "We acknowledge your contribution to the victory. Limited concessions can be made. You will have oversight of eastern trade negotiations and the right to recommend governors, subject to triumvirate approval. Military command in the east will remain joint; your forces and ours working in coordination. No independent armies. No private treaties with foreign powers."

Elowen’s eyes narrowed slightly, but she inclined her head. "Acceptable. For now. But I warn you, half measures breed resentment. The eastern houses need a firm hand. If you tie mine too tightly, they may look elsewhere for leadership."

Theron’s tone was cool, almost playful, but his eyes were sharp. "And you, dear sister, would never dream of providing that alternative leadership, would you? We keep you close for a reason. Inside the tent, pissing out. Better than the reverse."

A ripple of uneasy laughter went through the council. Elowen’s lips curved into a small, dangerous smile. "How charmingly crude, Theron. But accurate. I prefer to work within the system. For now."

Seren watched the exchange carefully. Her enhanced senses picked up the subtle shifts in scent’ Elowen’s ambition like spiced wine, sharp and heady; Vesper’s resentment like sour milk; the triplets’ wary calculation. She spoke up, her voice carrying new blend of human warmth with wolf authority.

"The east needs stability, not another power struggle. We all bled on the plains to keep the kingdom whole. If we start carving it up again, whether through rebellion or quiet ambition, we undo everything we fought for. Princess Elowen has proven she can lead. Let her prove it under shared rule, not as a rival court."

Elowen turned her gaze to Seren, studying her with open assessment. "The changed queen speaks with surprising wisdom. You bridge two worlds better than I expected. Perhaps your... unique perspective is useful after all." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

Seren met her eyes steadily. "It is. I lived as human. I stand as wolf and queen. I know what it feels like to be caught between. The east doesn’t need another ruler who sees only power. It needs someone who understands the cost of division. If you truly want a strong kingdom, prove it by building one with us, not against us."

The council chamber grew quiet. Lord Vesper looked displeased. Several conservative nobles shifted uncomfortably. But a few younger lords nodded, intrigued by the idea of pragmatic cooperation.

Aeron leaned back, fingers steepled. "Then it is decided. Limited authority granted. We will draft the formal decree this week. Elowen, you will report directly to the triumvirate on all major decisions. Any deviation will be considered a breach of the alliance."

Elowen rose gracefully, smoothing her gown. "I accept the terms. For the good of the realm." Her eyes lingered on Seren for a moment longer than necessary. "You continue to surprise me, sister-by-bond. Perhaps we are more alike than I first believed."

After the session ended and the nobles filed out, the triplets and Seren remained in the chamber. Kael let out a low growl. "She’s already planning her next move. I can smell it on her."

Aeron nodded. "She is competent. Ruthless. Keeping her inside the system is safer than leaving her outside to plot. But we watch her closely."

Theron smiled faintly. "She wants the east as her personal kingdom. We gave her a taste. Now we make sure the leash stays short."

Seren leaned back in her seat, rubbing her temples. "She’s not wrong about needing firm leadership in the east. But her ambition is like a live coal. One wrong breath and it flares up. We have to give her enough power to keep her invested, but not enough to let her build a rival throne."

Kael pulled her chair closer, his large hand resting on her knee. "You handled her well today. You spoke as queen, not just our mate. I’m proud of you. But I still don’t trust her near you."

Seren smiled softly, covering his hand with hers. "I know. But we can’t rule through fear and suspicion forever. If we want real unity, we have to take calculated risks. Even with family."

Aeron’s expression softened. "You’re right. The reforms are already causing ripples. Vesper is gathering support among the conservatives. If Elowen decides to align with them, even temporarily, we’ll have a real problem."

Theron stood, stretching. "Then we keep her busy. Give her real work in the east, rebuilding trade routes, securing borders. Make her success tied to ours. And we continue the reforms slowly but steadily. The common people are watching. They saw what Seren did on the plains. They want to believe change is possible."

Later that evening, in the royal chamber, the four of them gathered around a low fire. Seren curled against Kael’s side, Aeron reviewing documents nearby, Theron pouring wine for all of them.

"I keep thinking about the servants," Seren said quietly. "Lysa told me they’re organizing. Some see me as a champion. Others as a traitor who forgot where she came from. How do I bridge that gap without losing the trust of the nobles or the people?"

Kael’s arm tightened around her. "You don’t have to carry it alone. We’re in this together."

Aeron looked up from his papers. "The reforms will take time. We push where we can, compromise where we must. Your voice matters more than you realize. You lived both worlds. That’s something precious"

Theron handed her a glass of wine. "And if Elowen tries to use the east as a power base against us, we remind her that the bond between the four of us is stronger than any provincial ambition. She fought with us once. She can fight beside us again, or against us. The choice is hers."

Seren took a sip, letting the warmth spread through her. The bond wrapped around her like a living embrace; protective, steady, loving.
