Chapter 74: Alpha’s Attack
Magnus’s attack was relentless.
His massive silver-streaked form bore down on Seren with the full weight of decades of dominance fights and border wars. In the narrow-wooded ravine, away from the main battlefield, there was no room for the coordinated tactics that had kept her alive earlier. No friendly lines to retreat behind. No human spearmen to form a wall. Only trees, rock, and the brutal reality of facing an alpha who had ruled the northern territories through strength and fear for longer than she had been alive.
Seren fought with everything she had.
She shifted between forms with desperate fluidity, wolf for speed and claw, human for the blade still gripped in her blood-slick hand. Her strikes were faster than they had been at the start of the day, her movements sharper from hard-won experience in the chaos of the plains. She darted beneath Magnus’s sweeping claws, raking her own across his ribs and drawing fresh blood. She used the rocky outcrop to her advantage, leaping onto it to gain height before launching herself at his shoulder.
But Magnus was simply too experienced.
He anticipated her every move with chilling precision. When she tried to hamstring him, he pivoted and slammed his bulk into her, sending her crashing against a tree trunk. Pain exploded along her spine. She gasped, tasting blood, but forced herself upright. The bond was a raging inferno in her chest; Kael’s protective fury, Aeron’s desperate calculations, Theron’s cold determination all poured into her, trying to lend her their strength across the distance.
"You fight like a cornered pup," Magnus growled, circling her slowly. His silver-streaked fur was matted with blood, some his, most belonging to others. "Surrender, Seren. Come with me willingly and I will end this war. My legions will withdraw from the plains.
He lunged again, forcing her to dodge desperately. His claws grazed her shoulder, leaving deep, burning gashes. Seren countered with a wild slash of her own blade, catching him across the forearm. The wound was shallow, but it drew a snarl from the alpha.
"The triplets claim you because they fear what a single strong mate could do for their power," Magnus continued, voice smooth even as he attacked. "Sharing you makes you weaker. More vulnerable. Look at you now, fighting alone because they cannot protect you properly. Stand with me, I will make you queen in truth."
Seren’s golden-flecked eyes blazed with defiance. Blood dripped from her wounds, but she refused to yield. "You speak of power, but all I hear is conquest. You supported Castor’s plot to tear the kingdom apart. You attack because you cannot stand the idea of unity. I chose the triplets. I chose the kingdom they are building. I will not be your trophy or your excuse for war."
Magnus’s laugh was low and mocking. "Brave words from a pup who still smells of human fear. You think your precious bond makes you strong? It makes you a target. Surrender now and save the lives of those fools who follow you. Refuse, and I will kill you here, then finish what I started with your so-called mates."
He attacked with renewed savagery.
Seren fought for her life.
She used every lesson Kael had drilled into her during training: speed over strength, precision over power. She darted and weaved, striking when she saw openings and retreating before he could land a killing blow. Her blade flashed, catching Magnus across the thigh. Her claws raked his shoulder when she shifted to wolf form. But each successful hit came at a cost. Magnus’s experience allowed him to absorb the damage and counter with devastating force.
A brutal backhand sent her tumbling across the clearing. She crashed into the rocky outcrop, ribs screaming in protest. Blood filled her mouth. The bond screamed with the triplets’ terror and love as they fought desperately to break through the chaos and reach her.
Kael’s roar echoed distantly, raw with fury. *Hold on, little mate! I’m coming!*
Aeron’s voice was tight with strain. *We’re almost there. Stay alive.*
Theron’s shadows brushed against her mind like cool silk. *Fight smart. We see you.*
The main battle continued to rage and was keeping them pinned.
Magnus advanced slowly, savouring the moment. "Last chance, changed human. Come with me peacefully. End the war. I will treat you with the respect a mate of your rarity deserves. The triplets offer only division and weakness."
Seren pushed herself to her feet, claws extended, blade still gripped tightly despite the blood making her hands slick. Her breathing was ragged, her body screaming with pain, but her golden-flecked eyes burned with unyielding resolve.
"I choose them," she gasped. "You will never have me. Not while I draw breath."
Magnus’s eyes darkened with cold fury. "Then you will die for that choice."
He launched his final, brutal assault.
There was no more talking. Only the brutal reality of an alpha with decades of experience against a newly changed wolf still learning her own power.
Seren fought with everything she had left; speed, desperation, and the unbreakable love that flowed through the bond. She shifted rapidly, using wolf agility to dodge and human precision with the blade to strike. She landed several hits, drawing more blood from Magnus, but he absorbed the damage like it was nothing.
A powerful strike caught her across the chest, sending her flying backward. She hit the ground hard, the air driven from her lungs. Pain exploded through her body. The bond screamed with her mates’ shared agony and terror.
Magnus loomed over her, jaws open, claws raised for the killing blow.
Seren tried to rise, but her limbs felt heavy. Blood pooled beneath her. The bond was a desperate roar in her mind...Kael, Aeron, and Theron fighting with everything they had to reach her in time.
Magnus’s voice was a low, victorious growl. "A pity. You could have been so much more."
His claws descended.
At that exact moment, a thunderous roar split the air from the edge of the ravine.
Kael had broken through.
But Magnus’s elite guard still blocked the path, and the alpha himself stood ready to finish what he had started.
Seren’s vision blurred as the killing strike fell.
The bond burned brighter than the sun with love and desperate need.
The outcome of the entire war now rested on whether her mates could reach her before Magnus’s claws found her heart.
