Chapter 61: Trainings (2)
At dawn, the training grounds were shrouded in mist and the sharp scent of impending rain. Seren’s body still ached from yesterday’s exertions, but the wolf inside her demanded movement. She could feel the pull of the full moon approaching in two weeks; her first true shift under its light would be even more intense if she didn’t master control now. The wild part of her stirred restlessly, eager to run, to hunt, to fight.
The triplets rotated through lessons with ruthless efficiency, balancing her intense personal training with the urgent preparations for war. Maps of the river plains and border territories covered one end of the field, marked with troop positions and potential ambush sites, while weapons racks and padded targets filled the other. The air hummed with tension, the kingdom was on the brink, and every hour counted.
Kael took the lead again in combat. "Today we fight in both forms," he said, voice deep and commanding. "You must learn to transition mid-battle without losing awareness or control. Hesitation will get you killed."
He shifted first, becoming the towering black wolf that had protected her in the catacombs. His massive form radiated raw power and protective fury. Seren followed, the change coming faster this time, though still painful; bones cracking and reshaping, fur rippling across her skin in a dark wave. Her smaller wolf form landed lightly on four paws, senses exploding with new clarity. The world sharpened into vivid layers of scent and sound.
Kael attacked immediately, not with full lethal force, but enough to test her limits and reflexes. They sparred in a whirlwind of fur, snapping jaws, and powerful lunges. Seren’s new speed let her dodge and dart effectively, but her lack of control made her movements jerky and overcommitted. When Kael feinted left and struck right, she overcorrected and tumbled hard into the dirt, rolling several feet before coming to a stop.
He pinned her gently with one massive paw, his mental voice warm and encouraging through the bond. *Again. Feel the flow. Your wolf knows how to fight. Trust her, but guide her.*
They repeated the drill relentlessly until sweat and dirt matted her dark fur. By the tenth round, she managed a clean counterattack, nipping his shoulder hard enough to draw a surprised huff from the massive wolf. Pride surged through the bond from all three brothers, warming her despite the exhaustion.
When they finally shifted back to human form, Kael handed her a real blade; light, perfectly balanced for her smaller hands. "Your claws are weapons, but steel extends your reach. Strike fast. Use your speed to close distance, then retreat before they can counter. Never stand and trade blows with someone bigger and more experienced."
They drilled footwork, combinations, and transitions until her arms burned and her legs felt like lead. Kael’s teaching was deeply physical and instinctive. He corrected her stance with firm but gentle touches that lingered just long enough to send reassurance through the bond, grounding her when frustration threatened to rise.
After that, Aeron trained her more on the political weapon of her senses.
Theron’s lessons were the most subtle and perhaps the most vital for survival. He walked her through the pack hierarchy using the guards and servants as living examples. "Dominance is not always loud. A lowered gaze, a tilted throat, a shift in scent... these signal submission or challenge. As our mate, you sit at the top with us.
But in battle, you must read the northern wolves instantly. Magnus rules through fear and strength. His packs expect dominance displays. Show too much weakness and they will swarm you. Show too much aggression without control and you risk losing yourself to the wolf."
He had her practice reading the guards; identifying who truly submitted to the triumvirate and who harboured doubts. Seren’s growing ability to smell complex emotions amazed even her. Fear, loyalty, ambition, resentment...she could separate them like threads in a tapestry.
As the day wore on, the training grew more intense. They combined lessons: Seren shifting mid-spar with Kael, then using her heightened senses mid-fight to anticipate Aeron’s tactical instructions, while Theron tested her ability to read pack signals under pressure.
The bond helped enormously. The triplets’ steady presence anchored her when the wolf threatened to take over. When exhaustion made her shift unstable, their combined strength flowed through the link, steadying her.
By late afternoon, Seren achieved a significant milestone. She managed a full, controlled shift, held her wolf form for nearly twenty minutes without losing control, and shifted back to human form without collapsing. She stood in the centre of the training ground, panting heavily, sweat-soaked and dirt-streaked, but grinning with fierce, hard-won triumph.
"I did it," she breathed, voice hoarse but glowing with pride. "I felt her... me... completely. And I stayed in control."
Kael swept her into a crushing hug, laughter rumbling deep in his chest. "You’re a natural, little wolf. Dangerous already."
Aeron’s eyes shone with quiet pride. "Your senses will be invaluable in the war council tonight. We finalize strategy against Magnus’s advance."
Theron brushed a leaf from her hair, his touch lingering. "Pack dynamics will decide half the battles before steel is even drawn. You’re learning faster than we dared hope."
That evening, the war council convened in the great hall. Seren sat with the triplets on the raised dais, her new senses picking up every undercurrent in the room. She smelled the fear of some nobles, the calculated ambition of others, and the solid loyalty of the newly elevated houses.
Aeron laid out the strategy: defensive lines along the river plains, hit-and-run raids led by Theron’s shadows to disrupt supply lines, and a decisive stand where Kael’s strength could break the northern charge.
Seren contributed, her voice carrying new resonance. "Magnus’s packs respect strength. If we show unity and controlled power, especially with me fighting beside you...they may fracture internally. Some will see the bond as proof of greater strength, not weakness."
The council nodded, impressed by her insight.
The training had been gruelling, but Seren was no longer the uncertain, newly changed wolf of yesterday.
She was becoming something far more dangerous.
