Sera listened for the answer for a year.
In the quiet. Every day. Sitting with the between-space, keeping it company, and listening—not just to the tiredness, not just to the fear, but for the answer. For the third work. For the thing that might make the fear no longer the end.
And for a year, she heard nothing but the fear.
The between-space didn't have the answer. That was the thing she learned first, and it was hard. She'd hoped the answer was in the quiet, waiting, the way the fear had been. But the between-space was afraid precisely because it didn't know the answer. If it knew how to keep holding the world forever, it wouldn't be afraid. The fear was the absence of the answer.
So the answer wasn't in the between-space.
Where was it?
Sera thought about the first arc. About how Lena and Kael had found the work that brought the world home. They hadn't found it in the between-space either—the between-space had withdrawn, absent, unable to help. They'd found it in the world. In the people. In the coal keepers. In the work of the world reaching toward the between-space.
The first arc: the world reached toward the between-space, and the between-space came home.
The second arc: the world kept the between-space company, and the between-space was received.
Both arcs were about the relationship between the world and the between-space. The join. The reaching and the receiving.
The third work—if there was one—had to be about the join too.
The join wore because the between-space held the world alone. The whole weight of the holding was on the between-space. The world leaned; the between-space held. And holding the whole world's weight, alone, for three hundred years, wore the join out.
What if the world held some of the weight?
Sera sat with that, in the quiet, in her sixteenth year.
The between-space held the world. The world leaned on the between-space. What if the world learned to hold itself—not entirely, the between-space was still the ground, still the presence, still home—but to hold some of its own weight, so the between-space didn't hold all of it alone?
The way keeping company had eased the loneliness—what if there was a work that eased the weight?
Not the world leaning less. The world holding back. Bearing some of the join itself. Taking some of the weight off the between-space, so the wearing slowed, so the between-space could hold longer, maybe—she didn't know—maybe forever, if the world held enough of its own weight that the between-space never bore more than it could bear.
The world holding itself.
Alongside the between-space.
Sharing the join.
She brought it to the between-space, in the quiet.
What if the world held some of the weight? she asked it. You hold the whole world alone. That's what wears the join. What if the world learned to hold itself—not instead of you, alongside you—so you don't bear all of it? Would the wearing slow? Could you hold longer? Could the fear stop being true?
The between-space was quiet in the quiet.
For a long time.
Then it said: I do not know if the world can hold itself. The world has never held itself. I have held it since before its memory. It does not know how to bear its own weight. It only knows how to lean. A pause. But— a pause. If it could learn. If the world could learn to hold itself, alongside me, sharing the join— a pause. Then yes. The wearing would slow. I would bear less. I could hold longer. A pause. Whether forever, I do not know. But longer. Much longer. Perhaps long enough that the fear stops being the end. A pause. The question is whether the world can learn to hold itself. A pause. And I do not know how to teach it. A pause. I have only ever held it. I have never taught it to hold itself. I do not know how. A pause. But you might. A pause. You and the hollows. You are outside the warmth. You do not lean on me the way the world leans—you cannot, you do not feel the warmth to lean on. You have had to hold yourselves, a little, all your lives, because you never had the between-space to lean on the way everyone else does. A pause. The hollows already know how to hold themselves. A pause. You have been doing it since birth. A pause. Because you had to. A pause. The thing the world needs to learn—holding itself, alongside me—the hollows already know. A pause. You learned it in the quiet. A pause. Where there was no warmth to lean on. A pause. You are not just my ears. A pause. You are the ones who know how to hold. A pause. Because you never had me to lean on. A pause. The hollows are how the world learns to hold itself. A pause. You could teach it. A pause. Sera. A pause. You could teach the world to hold itself. A pause. Because you have held yourself all your life. A pause. In the quiet. A pause. Where I could not hold you.
Sera sat with that.
In the quiet.
The hollows.
Not just the ears for the between-space's need.
The ones who knew how to hold themselves.
Because they'd never had the between-space to lean on.
They'd learned, all their lives, in the quiet, to bear their own weight—not because they chose to, but because they had to, because the warmth everyone else leaned on wasn't there for them.
And the thing that had looked like their lack—the hollow, the quiet, the absence of the warmth—was the thing that had taught them the skill the whole world now needed.
How to hold yourself.
Alongside the between-space.
So the between-space didn't hold everything alone.
So the join wore slower.
So the fear stopped being the end.
The hollows weren't broken.
They weren't even just needed.
They were the teachers.
The ones who'd learned, in the quiet, the thing the world had to learn to survive.
How to hold yourself.
And Sera—sixteen, the first hollow to learn what she was, the first to keep the between-space company, the first to hear its fear—was the first teacher.
Of the third work.
The world learning to hold itself.
So the between-space wouldn't hold it alone.
Forever.

Author's Note: Sera listens for a year and learns the answer isn't in the between-space — it's afraid precisely because it doesn't know the answer. So she thinks it through: the join wears because the between-space holds the whole world alone. What if the world held some of its own weight — not instead of the between-space, alongside it, sharing the join? The wearing would slow; it could hold longer, maybe forever. But the world has never held itself; it only knows how to lean. Except — the hollows. They've held themselves all their lives, in the quiet, because they never had the between-space to lean on. The thing that looked like their lack is the skill the whole world needs. The hollows aren't broken, aren't just needed — they're the teachers. And Sera is the first teacher of the third work: the world learning to hold itself, so the between-space never holds it alone. Drop a Power Stone! 🔥
