The hollows needed a school.

Vell understood it the way Asta had understood the first expressive institution three hundred years before—the territory asking what you build for something new, and the answer being an institution that supported the new thing rather than correcting it.

The hollows were new.

There were perhaps four hundred of them across the whole world now—children born with the quiet in them, the ability to hear the between-space from outside the warmth, to keep it company. Rare. One in tens of thousands. But across the whole world, four hundred.

And they were being raised the way Sera had almost been raised before Doran told her the truth: as broken children. As children who couldn't feel what everyone else felt. As children missing something.

The world had been home so long that difference looked like damage.

The hollows were treated as damaged.

And the damage framing was doing to them exactly what the suppression had done three hundred years before—teaching them to fear what they were, building the wound at the root, making children who could have kept the between-space company instead believe they were broken and hide the quiet and never learn to use it.

The world was wounding its own hollows.

Out of not understanding what they were.

Vell built the school.

Not in the Ashrow—the hollows were scattered across the world, and the school needed to reach them where they were. She built it as a traveling institution at first, then as a network, the way the first correction work had spread: keepers who understood the hollows going to the territories where hollow children were being raised as broken, and finding them, and telling them the truth.

You're not broken.

You're a place where the between-space can be heard.

You can keep it company.

The way Doran had told Sera.

The way the whole work had always told the single person at the door: it's real, you're not broken, there's a path.

Except the hollows needed a different sentence than the children of the expressive phase had needed.

The expressive children heard: you're not broken, you're early.

The hollow children heard: you're not broken, you're needed.

Not early. Needed.

The between-space needed them. The world needed them. They were the ears the world had grown so it could finally hear the tired thing that had carried it. They weren't behind a development that hadn't arrived. They were the answer to a need the world hadn't known it had.

You're not broken. You're needed.

Sera, at eight now, helped build the school.

She was the first hollow who'd learned what she was. The first who'd been told the truth before the fear set in. And she became, young as she was, the one who could explain to the other hollows what they were—because she'd lived it, because she was one of them, because the explanation landed differently coming from another hollow than from a keeper inside the warmth.

She traveled with Vell to the territories.

And she sat with the hollow children—the ones being raised as broken, the ones hiding the quiet, the ones who'd learned to fear what they were—and she told them.

"You hear something the others don't," she'd say. "In the quiet. Where the warmth isn't. You hear the between-space. The tired thing that holds the whole world. And you can keep it company. You're not broken. You're the only ones who can do this. The whole world can receive the between-space. Only we can keep it company. You're not missing something. You have something. The most important something there is. The world needs you. The between-space needs you. You're not broken." She paused, every time. "You're needed."

And the hollow children—

heard it.

The way Sera had heard it from Doran.

And something in them settled.

Not the between-space's warmth—they'd never feel that. A different settling. The settling of a child who'd been told they were broken and had just learned they were needed.

The school grew.

The hollows, found and told the truth, began to learn what Sera had learned: to turn toward the between-space on purpose, to keep it company, to be present with the tired thing.

And across the world, in four hundred quiet places, the between-space was kept company.

A little at a time.

By the children who could hear it.

And it eased.

Not healed—three hundred years of tiredness didn't heal in a year. But held. Kept company. The leaning lifted, slightly, by four hundred children turning toward it in the quiet.

The reciprocal work, spreading.

The way the first work had spread.

Through a school.

Through finding the ones who could do the work and telling them the truth.

Through the chain.

Doran got the dispatches at the desk—he was very old now, the desk passing soon to the next keeper, but he stayed long enough to see this. The hollows found. The school built. The between-space kept company across the world. The second arc of the work beginning the way the first had: with a school that told people the truth about what they were.

He thought about Asta, three hundred years dead, who'd built the first expressive institution.

About Aldren, who'd built the first school and died before the first session.

About the chain of institution-builders.

And now Vell. And Sera. Building the school for the quiet. The institution for the hollows. The place that told the children who could hear the between-space: you're not broken, you're needed.

The chain extending.

Into the second arc.

The world learning to keep the between-space company.

Through the school for the quiet.

His display showed:

[THE SCHOOL FOR THE QUIET — BUILT FOR THE HOLLOWS]

[THE EXPRESSIVE CHILDREN HEARD: YOU'RE NOT BROKEN, YOU'RE EARLY.]

[THE HOLLOW CHILDREN HEAR: YOU'RE NOT BROKEN, YOU'RE NEEDED.]

[NOTE: THE WORLD WAS WOUNDING ITS OWN HOLLOWS — DIFFERENCE LOOKED LIKE DAMAGE.]

[NOTE: SERA, EIGHT, EXPLAINS TO THE OTHER HOLLOWS WHAT THEY ARE.]

[NOTE: 400 HOLLOWS ACROSS THE WORLD — KEEPING THE BETWEEN-SPACE COMPANY.]

[NOTE: THE RECIPROCAL WORK SPREADING. THROUGH A SCHOOL.]

[THE WORK CONTINUES.]

Author's Note: The hollows need a school. There are four hundred of them across the world now, and they're being raised as broken children — the world's been home so long that difference looks like damage, and the damage framing is wounding them the way the suppression once did. Vell builds the school for the quiet, finding hollow children and telling them the truth. But they need a different sentence than the expressive children: not "you're not broken, you're early" but "you're not broken, you're needed." Sera, eight, the first hollow to learn what she is, travels and explains to the other hollows what they are — it lands differently from another hollow. The reciprocal work spreads through a school, the way the first work did. Drop a Power Stone! 🔥
