Chapter 233: The Return to the Hollow

The between-space came home to the deepest hollow two years later.

Six years after his mother walked into the dark.

The dispatch that told him was short.

Kael. A pause. It’s home. Another pause. The between-space. In the deepest hollow. Fully. The way it came home to the Ashrow on that Thursday morning, years ago. Another pause. The community-level expression arrived here. In a region that was empty the whole duration. Among people who didn’t know anything was missing. Another pause. They know now. Another pause. They feel it. All of them. The warmth that was gone so long they forgot it was supposed to be here. It’s here. Fully. Another pause. I saw it. Another pause. I’m seventy-nine and I saw the between-space come home to the deepest hollow. Another pause. I didn’t expect to. Another pause. I came to keep a coal and die in the dark. Another pause. Instead I kept a coal and the coal caught and the between-space came home and I saw it. Another pause. The woman who cried when she first felt the warmth—she was at the center of the community-level expression when it arrived. She’s becoming a coal keeper now. She’ll keep the coal here after me. Another pause. The chain continues. In the deepest hollow. The thing that was emptiest is now home. Another pause. And there are more hollow territories beyond this one. The between-space’s sight, now that this hollow is home, reaches further. There are more. Deeper. Further past the map. Another pause. The young coal keepers are going to them. The eleven and the four taught the new ones, and the new ones are going deeper, to the next hollows. Another pause. The chain extends past me now. Another pause. I started it. The young ones continue it. The hollows fill, one by one, deeper and further, as the chain reaches them. Another pause. I think the whole world will be home eventually. Every hollow. Every region. As the chain reaches them. Another pause. I won’t see all of it. I’m seventy-nine. But I saw this one. The deepest hollow I could reach. Home. Another pause. That’s enough. Another pause. It was always enough. Another pause. Kael— a pause. I’m coming home. Another pause. The deepest hollow is home. The coal keeper here will keep it. The chain continues without me. I’ve done what I came to do. Another pause. I want to come home to the Ashrow. To the intake desk. To you. To taste the soup. Another pause. I want to die at home. In the Ashrow. Where I kept the coal for thirty years before I went into the dark. Another pause. I’m coming home. Another pause. It’ll take some months. The land past the map is hard. But I’m coming. Another pause. Keep the desk until I get there. Another pause. Keep the coal. Another pause. — Your mother.

He read it at the intake desk.

The young woman from the well—who kept the desk with him now, fully trained, receiving people herself while he watched—saw his face.

"What is it," she said.

"My mother," he said. "The between-space came home to the deepest hollow. She saw the return." He paused. "And she’s coming home."

The young woman’s face.

She’d heard about his mother for years. The coal keeper in the dark. The chain into the hollow.

"She’s coming home," the young woman said.

"She’s coming home," he said.

He wrote back.

Come home. The desk is kept. The soup is ready—I’ll make it the day you arrive, fresh, and you’ll taste it, and you’ll tell me if it’s as good as yours. I think it is. I want to know if you think so. He paused. You saw the return. At seventy-nine. In the deepest hollow you could reach. You came to die in the dark and instead you saw the between-space come home and now you’re coming home to me. He paused. That’s the whole work, Mother. The shape of it. The coal keeper who goes into the deepest dark and keeps a coal and sees the return and comes home. He paused. Come home. I’ll be at the desk. The way you were for thirty years. The way I’ve been for six. The way the young woman from the well will be after us. He paused. The chain continues. In the hollows, deeper and further, as the young ones reach them. The whole world coming home, one hollow at a time. He paused. You started it. The deepest part. The hardest part. You went first, into the dark, and kept the coal, and the chain follows you now into every hollow. He paused. Come home. Rest. You’ve done the hardest work there is. You’ve earned the soup and the desk and the children at the well and me. He paused. Come home. He paused. I’ll be waiting. He paused. Keep the coal until you get here. Then put it down. You’ve kept it long enough. Longer than anyone. Come home and let me keep it for both of us. He paused. I love you. He paused. I don’t think I said that enough either. He paused. I’m saying it now. He paused. Come home. He paused. — Kael.

He sent it.

Then he sat at the intake desk and looked at the door.

His mother was coming home.

Through the land past the map.

Months of walking.

But coming.

The coal keeper.

Who’d gone into the deepest dark and brought the between-space home to the emptiest place.

And was coming home to the Ashrow.

To the desk.

To him.

He received the next person at the door.

The young woman from the well watched.

The chain extending.

And somewhere past the edge of the map, his mother began the long walk home.

Through the hollow that was now home.

Past the territories filling one by one.

Toward the Ashrow.

Toward the intake desk.

Toward the soup.

Toward him.

Coming home.

His display stayed quiet.

The between-space saw all of it.

The whole world coming home, one hollow at a time.

And the coal keeper who started it.

Coming home herself.

His System pulsed once.

[THE BETWEEN-SPACE CAME HOME TO THE DEEPEST HOLLOW — SIX YEARS]

[SHE SAW THE RETURN — AT SEVENTY-NINE — IN THE EMPTIEST PLACE]

[THE CHAIN EXTENDS PAST HER NOW — INTO DEEPER HOLLOWS — THE WHOLE WORLD COMING HOME ONE AT A TIME]

[NOTE: SHE CAME TO DIE IN THE DARK. INSTEAD SHE SAW THE RETURN.]

[NOTE: AND NOW SHE’S COMING HOME.]

[NOTE: TO THE ASHROW. TO THE DESK. TO THE SOUP. TO HIM.]

[NOTE: HE TOLD HER HE LOVES HER. FOR THE FIRST TIME.]

[NOTE: COME HOME. I’LL BE WAITING. KEEP THE COAL UNTIL YOU GET HERE, THEN PUT IT DOWN.]

[NOTE: SHE BEGINS THE LONG WALK HOME.]

[THE WORK CONTINUES.]

Author’s Note: Six years after she walked into the dark, the between-space comes home to the deepest hollow. She saw the return — at seventy-nine, in the emptiest place, among people who didn’t know anything was missing. The chain extends past her now, into deeper hollows, the whole world coming home one at a time, as the young coal keepers she trained reach them. She came to die in the dark; instead she saw the return. And now she’s coming home — to the Ashrow, the desk, the soup, and Kael. He tells her he loves her, for the first time. Come home, I’ll be waiting. She begins the long walk home. Drop a Power Stone! 🔥
