Chapter 465: Mortal and Spirit

The afternoon light continued its slow descent, casting longer and longer shadows across the chamber, but none of the women paid it any mind.

"The form taken, the pulling of the bow, feeling the world move around your form, and achieving a peculiar state of mind, sometimes even if you don’t hit the mark." Sakura explained further, her fingers tracing the invisible arc of an arrow’s flight.

She then paused, her amber eyes meeting Tamar’s silver ones.

"However," she explained carefully, her tone more cautionary, "though Kyūdo is like an archery of peace and balance, its properties can be used for mass destruction in Elyndor, disrespecting the philosophy of it all. The same principles that allow an archer to find unity with their surroundings can be twisted into something chaotic.

"A master of Kyūdo who abandons the spiritual path can become a weapon of unimaginable devastation, capable of striking down armies with the same effortless motion that should have been reserved for meditation and self-improvement. We do have a more chaotic form of archery, by the way. A style that embraces the destructive potential rather than denying it."

Tamar was practically bouncing from the explanation and lore she was just served, her hands coming together with an enthusiasm that made the other women in the room smile.

She leaned forward, her entire body radiating eager energy.

Basically, she’s a martial art and history nerd.

"Oh! That reminds me of something!" Tamar exclaimed, her voice rising with excitement. "What you described, the feeling of the world moving around you, the state of mind that transcends the physical act of shooting, it sounds so remarkably similar to what we Amazons call Divine Projection! It allows the practitioner to feel the world move around their body, which gives them nigh-exact coordinates to the target, and causes them to rarely miss."

She rose from her seat, her movements fluid and confident as she positioned herself in the center of the room.

She raised her hand, one finger poised at the wall at an angle of elevation adjacent to her position, her body settling into a stance that seemed simultaneously relaxed and coiled with potential energy.

With raw concentration, her brow furrowing and her lips parting slightly, saliva began to drip a bit from her lips as she channeled her focus into that single point.

Her entire being seemed to narrow, to condense into something sharp and focused, a spear of pure intention aimed at the wall.

THWACK!

The wall suddenly got assaulted by an invisible force that carved out a perfect fist-sized circle into the hard stone-wall, the edges smooth as if cut by a master mason rather than shattered by brute force of will.

Dust and small fragments of stone drifted down like snow, settling on the floor in a fine gray powder.

For a long moment, no one moved.

The sound of the impact seemed to hang in the air, reverberating through the chamber like a struck bell.

Titania’s butterfly wings had frozen mid-flutter. Violette’s hand had stopped halfway to her mouth, a piece of meat dangling forgotten from her fingers.

Nyx had lifted her head from her lounging position, her yellow eyes shocked with an expression that bordered on alarm.

Even Rahab, who had maintained her stoic indifference throughout the afternoon, had turned her head slightly.

"Good job, Tamar!" Elara smiled. However, there was an undercurrent of annoyance in the vandalism that crept into her voice. "But I told you to not do this indoors! We have training grounds specifically designed for this purpose.."

Tamar’s face flushed with embarrassment, her earlier confidence evaporating like morning mist, and she began profusely apologizing to her mother.

As Tamar continued her stream of apologies, the audience were dumbfounded, leaving their dishes and staring at the hole in the wall with the same expression of disbelief.

Except Rahab, of course.

Titania was almost sweating, her small face pale, as the meat hanging in her small teeth fell off to the plate with a soft thud.

She stared at the destruction Tamar had wrought with nothing more than a finger and her will.

[What... just happened...?] Was the thought of everyone present.

"No, no, no!" Sakura shook her head as she processed what she had witnessed.

She looked from Tamar to the hole in the wall and back again. "That was NOT Kyūdo! It was some kind of... OTHER version of it. Wait, is this the divine projection you were speaking of?"

"What? Absolutely not," Elara waved a hand casually, dismissing the question with ease. Her expression remained calm, as if Tamar’s demonstration was nothing more than a party trick. "If that was the case, Amazons would be seriously terrifying."

"As if you guys are not terrifying enough already..." Titania dabbed some of the meat juice from her mouth. "But Elara doesn’t know what Tamar just did?"

Elara replied, "Hm? She is an exceptional arche—"

"It’s not just that," Violette cut her off. "What Tamar just displayed now told us that there is probably nothing she cannot target. Not just physical objects, but even a spiritual entity."

Tamar listened closely, her head tilted slightly as she processed the words being spoken about her.

[What... in the world are they talking about?] her expression seemed to say. [I just did the divine projection thing. Why are they all looking at me like I have grown a second head?]

Nyx then spoke up from her position on the floor, her voice small but grave, making everyone in the room turn to look at her.

"That Amazon lady did not let the world flow around her," she said slowly, her words careful and deliberate. "She let the world flow THROUGH her. And that means she acted as a spirit just now, a conduit for forces that should not be channeled by mortal flesh, and it is upsetting because she clearly is not a spirit."

"What she said!" Titania nodded vigorously, her butterfly wings fluttering with renewed energy as she found validation for her earlier reaction. "It means Tamar becomes a spiritual entity when she shoots her arrows, and becomes a physical mass again after she’s done."

Elara drooped her eyes and sighed at the baseless fact, her expression one of exhaustion.

She rubbed her temples with her fingers, as if warding off an impending headache. "Now... how does that make any sense?"
