Chapter 458: Bonus Chapter 48: Death vs Death: Confrontation
Severia moved to his body after 2 minutes had passed, allowing ample time for any tricks or surprises.
She checked his pulse and other signs to see if he was truly dead, her fingers pressing against his neck, his wrist, his chest.
And she found nothing. No heartbeat. No breath. No flicker of the soul that had once animated this form.
The man who had been so powerful, so confident, was now nothing more than a cooling corpse on the wooden floor of his love nest.
Since his soul was not fluctuating like a burning flame, it indicated it had fully died and would soon depart from the vessel that had once housed it.
There was no residual energy or fading ember of consciousness that might reignite given time.
The soul-severing properties of her knife had done their work completely and irrevocably, cutting the connection between spirit and body with surgical precision that left no room for recovery.
"Mission complete..." Severia sighed and closed the man’s eye lids with her palms.
She allowed herself a moment of satisfaction, a brief acknowledgment of a job well done, then stood up and began to walk away from the cottage.
"First, the coldness—both the knife’s and the body temperature—seeps in, then a sharp pain occurs. But sometimes it’s the reverse," a familiar voice stopped Severia in her tracks, the words cutting through the silence like a blade through flesh.
Her blood froze up as she recognized the speaker, her body holding in place as disbelief washed over her.
They continued; "It doesn’t quite work on me anymore, but normally the realization of being stabbed adds a lot of fear and confusion to a person. Then due to heart failure and oxygen no longer reaching the brain properly, the vision starts to tunnel and narrow, then you lose balance. In the next few seconds, you’d lose consciousness, then practically die in the next minute. Irreversibly in the next 5 or so minutes."
Severia quickly spun around and gawked at the standing person she had just stabbed, her dead green eyes widening in a surprise that she had not experienced in years.
The blood had stained his pale tunic, a dark red bloom spreading across the fabric, but it didn’t seem like he was bleeding anymore.
The wound that should have been fatal, that should have ended his existence permanently, appeared to have already closed and healed as if it had never happened.
"I... Impossible! Even if you’re somehow immortal, you should have still died!" Severia’s voice cracked with disbelief, her professional composure shattering in the face of the impossible sight before her. "The knife severs the soul from the body! It doesn’t matter how powerful you are, the connection is cut and cannot be restored!"
"And here I am standing again," he walked down the small stairs, his bare legs touching the cold fresh earth as if he had not a care in the world.
His movements were casual and unhurried, the movements of someone who had all the time in existence. "You clearly failed to take me out, Severia."
"?!’ She recoiled from her name suddenly being called, her body trembled as if struck. "H-H-How did you know my name?!"
"Haha, stop trembling like a cold pup in the snow!" He laughed and held his head from how she seemed like a newborn lamb, the gesture displaying a strange warmth. "You’re making me seem bad for not going down when I should have. I’m not the villain here, you know... Or maybe I am."
"..."
"..."
They stared at each other for a while, the silence stretching between them like an invisible barrier.
Severia’s mind raced, searching for an explanation, a strategy, any way to escape the difficult situation she had found herself in.
The assassin who had never failed was now facing her first true defeat: that was how much confidence she had in her strategy and weapon.
The androgynous-looking man spoke again, his voice sounding with casual revelation: "My name is Benjamin Mark. You were sent to me so that I would kill you."
The moment those words entered Severia’s ears, her eyes dilated and she immediately dropped on her knees, tears pouring out of her eyes in uncontrolled streams.
The cold, dead assassin who had never shown emotion in her entire career was suddenly weeping like a child, her body trembling with real terror.
"Eh...? P... P-P-Please, don’t kill m-m-e!!" She clasped her hands as if in prayer, desperate and undignified, a complete contrast to her fearsome reputation. "I don’t... want to die yet! Please, I’ll do anything! Just spare my life!"
"Uwah! Now isn’t that dishonorable?" Benjamin teased, his hands clasped behind his back as he moved slowly to the kneeling woman, his expression one of exaggerated disappointment. "Isn’t this the part where you say something cool and I decapitate you while also saying something cool? Heck, you’re at least supposed to be running while I slowly creep behind you with villainous laughter. You’re no fun, Severia. You’re supposed to be the legendary monster without a form, and here you are begging on your knees like a common criminal."
Severia was severely panicking, and couldn’t quite understand what Benjamin was saying besides the clear implication that she was going to be killed, so she tried again, her voice cracking with desperation:
"I have money, and I know a lot of influential people who would pay for my safety! So please, spare my life. I am valuable, I swear...! I swear, I swear! You will not regret letting me go! I can also be useful to you, I will serve you, and I can—"
"Ahhh..." Benjamin nodded his head solemnly and frowned, his gaze shifting to stare at the bright full moon that hung in the sky like a silent witness to their encounter. "Anastasia also didn’t want to die. You know, the two years old girl you strangled last week? She was just learning to walk, too.
"She had a future, even in this hellhole of a nation, and a family that loved her. And you took all of that away for a couple of coins. Ah, don’t worry, Sara and Lulu already taught your employer a dreadful lesson, before coming to sic you on me."
Severia’s breath caught up in her throat as he mentioned the recent assassination she had taken from a jealous and barren second wife.
The memory came rushing back—the small child, the crying mother, the froth and saliva on her hands that she had barely registered at the time.
She had killed so many that the individual faces had blurred together, but now, in this moment of terror, the image of that little girl’s face was suddenly crystal clear.
