Chapter 262: DIVORCE

Finnegan

The divorce was finally done. Victoria was out of the picture, legally, publicly and completely. The papers were signed and for the first time in years I felt like I could breathe easy.

It was like being set free from a prison, and I owed it all to my little girl.

I glanced across the table at the private rooftop restaurant, a quiet smile tugging at my lips.

Abigail sat beside me, her hand intertwined with mine under the table, her thumb stroking my knuckles in slow, soothing circles. Henry was telling some ridiculous story involving a golf cart and a peacock, and everyone was laughing.

Well, almost everyone. My gaze drifted to my daughter on my other side. She wasn’t laughing.

Her eyes were distant, and she had been like this for a week now, ever since that night in Victoria’s garden. My daughter was never quite reclusive, but now she retreated to her room for hours, emerging only when she was called.

Was it trauma? Should I get her a therapist?

That was starting to look like the best course of action right now. She had faced her mother and no child should ever have to do that. What had angered me was that bitch touching my girl.

I was going to make sure her life in jail stretched on as miserably as possible just for that.

But there was something else. Sometimes Angel would look at me with a pained look in her eyes. Yesterday, she flinched when I touched her shoulder. My daughter had never flinched from me before.

"Finn?" Abigail’s voice pulled me back. "You okay?"

I nodded gruffly. "Fine. Just thinking. Do you want a refill?" I gestured to her wine glass, and she nodded eagerly. Reaching across the table, I poured her a glass.

"Thanks,"

"Anytime, Baby,"

Angel’s eyes met mine across the table, and for a moment, I saw something flash there. Fear? Guilt? Then she looked away, burying her face in her soda, her dark hair falling forward to hide her face.

"To Finnegan’s freedom," Henry cheered, raising his glass. "Drink up y’all, this is a celebratory dinner, not a funeral."

River nudged his chest while we all clinked glasses. Abigail leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to my cheek.

I turned and kissed her properly. We could be together freely now. After so fucking long, Christ.

When we pulled apart, Angel made a fake gagging sound, but her smile didn’t light up her face the way it used to.

"Gross, but I approve," she drawled sassily.

Henry chuckled.

"Finally. I was starting to think you two would sneak around forever."

The meal was light and joyful, or it should have been. There was good food and better company, but I found myself watching Angel.

She pushed her food around her plate without eating and answered questions in monosyllables.

When River tried to draw her into conversation about school, she mumbled something about being tired and disappeared into the bathroom for twenty minutes.

Abigail noticed me watching, her brow furrowing with concern. "She’s been through a lot," she murmured, following my gaze. "Give her time."

For a few precious hours, I allowed myself to believe we were winning. But the world never let me rest for long.

My phone buzzed violently during dessert, vibrating against the linen tablecloth like an angry hornet.

I glanced at the screen to see Jason’s name flashing across it. I excused myself and answered. The panic in his voice nearly gave me a heart attack.

"S-Sir, we have a major breach, I... uh... Oh god, what do we do?"

"Jason," I hissed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "Breathe. I don’t understand a word you’re saying."

He took deep breaths. "Someone used your executive credentials and cleared out over forty million from the main accounts this morning. There are transfers to bank accounts all over America. The board is panicking. Stock is already dropping, and investors are threatening to sue. The SEC..."

He rambled on while blood pounded through my ears. How on earth was that possible? I knew it was Devin, but how? Was that why he had been worried about Mother’s safety?

There was no doubt. My brother had used my identity, my codes, and my access to bleed the company dry.

"Sir?"

"Freeze everything," I ordered. "All accounts and all transfers. Lock down the system."

I ended the call and returned to the table, forcing a calm expression onto my face, but everyone already wore worried looks.

"It’s nothing," I brushed it off. "Just a few issues, and they can be sorted out later,"

"Finn, we’re not deaf," River grumbled. "What did the asshole do this time?"

An hour later I was at Wolfe Corp, in an emergency meeting along with Abigail.

For the next twelve hours, I worked around the clock.

I called emergency meetings with the board via video, had the suspicious accounts frozen, alerted federal authorities, filed reports with the FBI’s cyber crimes division, and activated every contingency plan we had to keep my company above water.

It was insane. Lawsuits poured in, and for some reason my brother had insanely contacted Carlton Gayle to tip him off, and now the headlines screamed about internal fraud and instability at Wolfe Corp, questioning my leadership, my integrity, my fitness to run the company my father built.

I had to admit Devin had been smart. He had used my own credentials, making it look like I had authorized the transfers.

The timestamps were carefully placed during times when I had no alibi. The board was rattled. Some members were already whispering about calling for my resignation.

By the third day, I was close to losing my mind. I could resign — I would still have all the wealth I had amassed — but I couldn’t let Dad’s company get torn down by Mother and Devin not after the promise I made to him on his sick bed.

I leaned back in my seat in the study, rubbing my eyes. The numbers on my laptop screen swam together.

I glanced up to see Abigail tapping rapidly on her tablet too. She was seated on the couch in my study, her hair tied up in a bun, biting a pen between her teeth. She had insisted on doing this with me.

My eyes drifted to the clock. It was twenty minutes after midnight.

"Baby girl, you should go to bed," I murmured, a little smile tugging at my lips when she narrowed her eyes at me, pulling the pen from between her lips. "I’ve got this,"

"You tried that yesterday, did it work?" She chuckled, setting the tablet down on the corner of the desk and came around behind my chair, wrapping her arms around my shoulders, her cheek pressing against the top of my head.
