Chapter 251: A REPLACEMENT

Abigail

I screamed like a banshee. A massive black bug, the size of my thumb, decided the outdoors wasn’t enough for it and flew straight into my bedroom and landed on the lampshade.

Yeah, my life pretty much flashed before my eyes. I was standing on the bed and clutching Annette like she was a lifeline with my heart pounding in my throat.

"Kill it! Kill it! Kill it!" I shrieked, my voice cracking. Annette, bless her heart and soul, wasn’t screaming but her eyes were wide as saucers and she was clearly freaked out too.

She swatted at the air with a magazine. "Abigail, you literally faced down a gun-wielding psychopath and shot him in the knee, but a bug makes you lose your mind?"

"This is different!" I wailed as the bug took flight again and buzzed menacingly near my head.

"Guns I can handle. Bugs are evil little demons with wings! Demons are bad enough but with wings? Ew!" My sides ached as I flailed my arms in the air.

Two weeks had passed since the car accident and my bruises were fading to ugly yellow-green marks on my skin and the deeper cuts were healing but I still had to move carefully or I could tear the healing seams apart.

Or at least that was what Finnegan thought. He would have a heart attack if he saw me flailing around the room trying to fight off a bug like my life depended on it. River and Angel had left for Switzerland a few days ago.

It was a necessary but painful decision to keep Angel safe and the house felt emptier without them and I missed them both terribly. It was all for the best, at least until we could solve this mess with Devin and his crazy mother.

I made Annette swear to never tell my grandparents about the accident though because it would only make them worry. The bug dive-bombed again from the ceiling and I screamed louder. The bedroom door burst open with a bang.

Finnegan stormed in with his chest heaving and his green eyes wild with panic. He had clearly sprinted from wherever he was, probably his study, and his phone was still in his hand so he must have been on a call.

"What happened?!" he demanded, scanning the room rapidly. "Abigail, are you hurt?!"

There was a murderous look on his face. His wounds had healed mostly except for the gash on his side which would take some more time.

His dark hair was tousled, his black long-sleeved shirt slightly unbuttoned and showing a peek of his tense golden muscles. My heart did a stupid flip even in the middle of my terror.

"It’s a bug!" I pointed dramatically. "A huge, evil bug! Kill it before it lays eggs in my soul!"

Finnegan blinked rapidly and the panic on his face melted into disbelief and then amusement.

"A... bug?"

Annette snorted.

"She’s been screaming for five minutes straight. If we had neighbors on this estate they would have called the police already."

The black disgusting bug chose that moment to fly toward the bed and I shrieked and practically climbed Finnegan like a tree. He caught me easily with one arm around my waist but the bug veered and disappeared under the bed frame.

"Nooo!" I wailed, burying my face in his neck. "It’s under there now. It’s plotting world domination from under our bed!" Finnegan chuckled, the sound low and warm against my ear.

"It’s just a beetle, baby."

"It’s not a beetle, it’s a demon!" I protested but I was already smiling against his skin. God, he smelled so good.

I took a deeper breath and desire pooled low in my belly. It had been too long without him. He set me down gently on the bed and crouched, lifting the bed frame with one powerful arm.

The muscles in his back and shoulders flexed under his tight shirt and my mouth went dry. After two weeks of him treating me like fragile glass and offering only gentle kisses and light touches he had left me absolutely starving.

I was healing and I knew that but damn it, my body was working just fine and it was aching for him. He found the bug, scooped it into a tissue and carried it to the bathroom.

When he came back wiping his hands I was sitting on the edge of the bed with my thighs pressed together, watching him hungrily. Annette had slipped out of the room entirely.

God I loved her.

She always knew how to read the room. And I was very much in the mood for a very specific kind of Finnegan.

His low-slung sweatpants sat dangerously on his hips and the tight black t-shirt clung to his broad chest and defined abs.

I licked my lips as he approached, clearly intending to soothe me, but he paused when he caught the look on my face. His eyes darkened for a split second and his Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard.

"I’ll... go wash my hands properly," he muttered, his voice a little rough, and turned to leave.

I stood up quickly and ignored the twinge in my side and caught his arm. My fingers trailed up his chest. "You’re my big, strong man," I purred.

"That was very sexy."

"It was just a bug, Abigail." He sucked in a breath when my hands splayed over his chest and leaned down to press a brief soft and chaste kiss to my lips before pulling away with a quiet groan.

"You should get some rest." I couldn’t get a word out before he stalked toward the door and left me stewing in pure frustration.

Two weeks of gentle Finnegan was driving me completely insane. I needed all of him, rough and hungry and claiming. I flopped back on the bed thinking maybe I needed to find another bug when Annette poked her head back in.

"I’m heading out to meet Jade and Sasha. They’re worried sick. You sure you don’t want to come?" I shook my head, still staring at the door and wishing Finnegan would come back.

"Yeah, no. I’m good. Tell them I’ll explain everything when this Devin mess dies down."

After she left I paced the room restlessly with my body humming with need. I was done being treated like I might shatter so I went looking for him.

I found Finnegan in his study with his back to me and a phone to his ear.

"...yes, start interviewing for a new assistant position, I need someone reliable..." My eyes went wide with disbelief and I barged in without knocking.

"You’re replacing me?!"
