Chapter 402: The Maw Opens
The Reaper lunged forward without warning—a blur of abyssal black and crimson hunger, its scythe already carving a deadly arc through the air. The blade was aimed directly at Adam’s throat, trailing a wake of distorted space and screaming air.
Adam was already moving to meet the attack. His fist shot forward, wreathed in writhing dark energy, meeting the scythe’s edge head-on.
"[Monarch’s Pierce]!"
The impact was cataclysmic. A shockwave of raw force exploded outward from the point of contact, cracking the scorched earth and sending debris hurtling in all directions.
Then the Reaper’s blade broke through.
The scythe swept forward, carving a deep gash across Adam’s ribs. Blood sprayed, black and thick, sizzling where it touched the corrupted ground. Adam’s regeneration kicked in almost immediately, the wound beginning to seal, but the attack had been too fast.
Adam’s eyes narrowed. ’It’s stronger than before. That demon’s soul really pushed it over the edge.’
The Reaper pressed its advantage, the scythe reversing direction in a brutal, fluid arc aimed at Adam’s neck.
Adam’s hand shot up.
"[Avarice’s Maw]!"
A rift tore open in the air before him—a swirling, gaping maw of absolute darkness, its edges lined with teeth of shadow and starlight. The scythe’s blade struck the Maw and stopped. The darkness gripped it, pulling, devouring.
Adam’s aura surged. The Crown of the Hollow Glutton blazed on his brow, its hunger flaring in response to the entity’s power. The air around them grew thick, heavy with the weight of ancient consumption.
The Reaper’s form convulsed. Its hollow gaze flickered as it felt the Maw’s pull—a force that sought to unravel it, to consume the very essence that had been born from Greg’s sacrifice.
The black blade began to crack. Fissures spider-webbed across its surface, and the Reaper let out a distorted, guttural sound.
[Warning! Soul integrity destabilizing!]
[The Crown of the Hollow Glutton is attempting to devour a soul-bound entity. Host soul is under extreme strain. Continued consumption may result in permanent damage or death.]
Adam’s lips curled into a fierce, bloody grin as he felt the Maw’s power surge. The pain in his chest was sharp, searing, his soul screaming in protest, but he didn’t pull back.
"I can see the end of this blade."
The Reaper’s scythe splintered. A large chunk of the black metal broke away, swallowed by the Maw’s endless hunger. The Reaper staggered back, its form flickering, its grip on the remaining blade faltering.
Adam’s chest heaved as he let the Maw close, the rift sealing shut with a low, resonant hum. The Crown’s hunger subsided, settling back into a low, satisfied pulse.
"A decent appetizer."
The Reaper let out a deafening, distorted screech—a sound that clawed at the mind and rattled the bones. Its hollow gaze blazed with fury as it felt the sting of Adam’s dominance.
"GHRAAAAAA—!"
It lunged forward again, its remaining scythe trailing a wake of corrupted energy. Waves of void and decay erupted from its form in all directions, an area-of-effect assault that warped the air and corroded the ground beneath it. The earth hissed and blackened where the energy touched, stone crumbling to ash.
Adam’s wings snapped open, carrying him upward in a blur of motion. The waves of corruption passed beneath him, consuming the ground where he had been standing seconds before. He hovered above the carnage, his crimson eyes gleaming with amusement.
"Still not enough," he called down, his voice carrying a mocking edge. "Is that the best you can do? Entertain me more."
Adam dove.
He closed the distance in a flash. The Reaper’s hollow gaze tracked him, but Adam was too fast. His fist, wreathed in dark energy, drove into the entity’s side with devastating force.
"[Monarch’s Pierce]!"
The impact tore through the Reaper’s form, black ichor spraying from the wound. The entity convulsed, its form flickering as it staggered back.
Adam didn’t give it a chance to recover. His tail lashed out, wrapping around the Reaper’s torso, pinning its arms to its sides.
"[Ouroboros Coils]!"
The coils tightened, crushing, constricting. The Reaper thrashed, its hollow form writhing as Adam’s grip held firm. With a powerful beat of his wings, Adam lifted the entity into the air, ascending rapidly before spinning and hurling it downward with brutal force.
The Reaper crashed into the earth with a thunderous impact, carving a massive crater into the scorched ground. Dust and debris erupted in all directions.
Seizing the opening, He folded his wings and dove, his body becoming a streak of shadow and scale as he plummeted toward the crater. He slammed into the Reaper’s form, driving it deeper into the earth.
The ground cracked. The crater expanded. Adam’s fists rained down on the entity’s form—brutal, relentless, each strike landing with crushing force.
"[Prismatic Beam]!"
He opened his jaws wide, and a lance of rainbow light erupted from his throat, striking the Reaper directly in its hollow maw. The entity convulsed violently, its form flickering as the light tore through it from within.
Adam rose, standing over the weakened Reaper, his chest heaving, his scales slick with ichor. His voice carried a cold, dismissive edge.
"So this is the great Soul Reaper? Just a hollow fraud."
The Reaper’s form shuddered. A low, guttural sound escaped its core. It pushed itself up, its hollow gaze fixed on Adam with burning, undying hatred.
Then it raised its remaining scythe high. The blade began to pulse, and the fallen souls scattered across the battlefield began to rise. Wisps of spectral energy spiraled upward, drawn toward the Reaper’s waiting maw. The entity drank them in, its form swelling, its aura intensifying.
Adam’s eyes widened slightly.
"Now that’s more like it."
The Reaper’s form convulsed violently as it absorbed the last of the fallen souls. Its body twisted, reshaped, and expanded. A dark cocoon of writhing shadows that cracked and split, revealing something new beneath.
Where the Reaper had stood, a towering figure now rose. Its form was sleeker, more refined, crowned with jagged spires of solidified darkness. A halo of black energy pulsed above its brow, and its scythe had reformed, longer and deadlier, its edge gleaming with an insatiable hunger. The aura radiating from it was denser, more oppressive, pressing against the battlefield like a physical weight.
Alice’s dark violet eyes narrowed as she arrived at the edge of the crater, Azrynn stepping up behind her, a severed head dangling from her hand—the fleeing soldier’s, his face frozen in eternal terror.
Azrynn’s voice cracked, her yellow eyes widening in disbelief. "W-What... is that thing now..?"
Alice’s tail lashed, her voice sharp with impatience. "Adam! What are you waiting for?! Finish it before it gets any stronger!"
Adam’s crimson eyes gleamed with dark amusement. He didn’t move. "Not yet. I want to see what it can do. This thing is fascinating—it absorbs souls, turns them into power, just like Gluttony. I want to know what happens if I consume it."
Azrynn’s expression flickered with disbelief. "That’s... that’s not how you should think about a life-or-death fight..."
Alice’s eye twitched violently. "He’s an idiot."
The Reaper let out a low, resonant hum, its new form settling into place. It raised its scythe high, the edge gleaming with a hunger that matched Adam’s own.
Adam’s smile widened, his crimson eyes blazing with anticipation as he studied the Reaper’s new form. Without a word, he raised his hand, and the air before him tore open.
"[Avarice’s Maw]."
The rift expanded—a gaping, swirling maw of absolute darkness, its edges lined with teeth of shadow and starlight. It pulsed with ancient hunger, reaching toward the Reaper with devouring intent.
The Reaper’s form flickered. Its hollow gaze widened as it felt the pull—a force far older than its own. It tried to retreat, to dissolve into shadow, but the Maw was relentless.
The Crown of the Hollow Glutton blazed on Adam’s brow, its hunger surging in response to the entity’s power. The Reaper’s form began to unravel, pieces of it torn away and drawn into the Maw’s waiting depths.
"KRAAGH—! KAGHH—! AAAHHHGGGH—!"
The Reaper’s scream was distorted, layered, a chorus of a thousand consumed voices all crying out in unison as it was pulled apart. The scythe splintered, the crown shattered, and the entity’s form dissolved into streams of dark energy that spiraled into the Maw’s endless hunger.
The last traces of the Reaper were swallowed, and the rift sealed shut with a low, resonant hum.

Adam’s eyes widened slightly as the notification scrolled across his vision. A slow, satisfied grin spread across his face.
"Huh. So that’s where the scythe went."
He raised his hand, and the air before him shimmered. The scythe materialized—its blade a deep, abyssal black, its edge gleaming with a faint, devouring light. The handle was wrapped in worn leather, the metal cool and alive in his grip.
Alice’s ear twitched, her dark violet eyes studying the weapon with quiet appraisal.
"Hmph. At least you got something useful out of it."
Adam’s grin widened, his crimson eyes gleaming with satisfaction as he tested the scythe’s weight.
"Now that’s what I call a reward."
