Chapter 391: Whispers in the Underbrush
Solarian Military Outpost – Near the Myrta Route
The Solarian soldiers moved with practiced efficiency around the small outpost, their armor gleaming dully under the grey sky. Crates of supplies were stacked in neat rows, and a few tents had been erected near the edge of the clearing. A low fire crackled at the center, casting long shadows across the trampled earth.
One of the soldiers, wiped sweat from his brow as he hefted a heavy crate onto a wagon. His voice carried a note of weary complaint.
"They’re saying a demon commander is leading the forward assault. We’re supposed to hold this position while they push into the front lines."
Another soldier, younger, with nervous eyes, glanced over his shoulder as if expecting something to leap out of the shadows. His voice was tight, uncertain.
"Isn’t that dangerous? I mean—what if the demons break through?"
The veteran let out a dry, humorless laugh, shaking his head as he secured the crate.
"That’s why we’re here, boy. We’re the supply line. Safe behind the front, far from the real fighting." He paused, a flicker of unease passing through his eyes. "Though I’ve heard rumors that a dragon was sighted near here. The same one that leveled Kaelthar."
The young soldier’s face paled, his voice dropping to a nervous whisper.
"That’s just a rumor, right? If there really was a dragon, the First Prince would have dealt with it. He’s the one who—"
He stopped mid-sentence, his head snapping toward a cluster of bushes at the edge of the clearing. His hand moved to the hilt of his sword, his voice sharp and wary.
"Did you hear that?"
The veteran’s eyes narrowed, his hand drifting to his own weapon as he followed the younger soldier’s gaze.
"Hear what?"
The young soldier’s eyes darted across the treeline, his voice tight.
"I thought I heard something. Over there."
The veteran let out a slow, exasperated breath, shaking his head with a faint smirk.
"You’re imagining things. There’s nothing there. Probably just an animal."
The young soldier’s gaze lingered on the bushes, his brow furrowed with lingering doubt. His voice came out quieter, almost to himself.
"...I swear I heard something."
In the bushes, Adam’s form was perfectly still, his camouflage blending seamlessly with the shadows. Beside him, Alice crouched with her cat ears flat against her skull, her dark violet eyes fixed on the soldiers with predatory stillness. Behind them, Azrynn held the Null-Sense Ward Orb, its surface pulsing faintly as it masked their presence.
Adam let out a slow, silent breath, his voice barely a whisper.
"Safe."
Adam’s voice came out in a sharp, low whisper as he glanced at Alice, his crimson eyes narrowing with frustration.
"Alice. Walk more quietly. We almost got caught back there."
Alice’s ears flattened, her tail lashing once with irritation. Her voice was equally low, carrying a sharp, defensive edge.
"That wasn’t my fault. You’re the one who stopped suddenly. I wasn’t expecting you to just freeze in the middle of the path."
Azrynn’s voice cut through, calm but carrying a note of quiet urgency as she crouched low, her yellow eyes scanning the treeline ahead.
"Both of you, quiet. We’re still close to the outpost. This position isn’t safe yet. We need to keep moving."
Adam let out a slow breath, his shoulders relaxing slightly as he nodded. He turned and began moving forward, his footsteps silent on the soft earth. His voice came out in a low, exasperated murmur.
"Why did Selena have to hide her stash in such an inconvenient place? Couldn’t she have picked somewhere closer to the city?"
Alice’s voice came from behind him, dry and pointed, her tone carrying a note of unapologetic blame.
"Blame the humans who set up an outpost on someone else’s property. If they hadn’t built their little camp right on top of her hiding spot, we wouldn’t be sneaking through the woods like thieves."
She paused, a faint, almost mischievous smile tugging at her lips.
"By the way, did you see Lilith’s face when she lost the rock-paper-scissors? She looked like she’d swallowed a sour grape. Haha, her expression was priceless."
Azrynn’s lips twitched despite herself. Her voice came out low, amused.
"I didn’t notice. She seemed calm about it."
Alice’s tail swished with smug satisfaction, her voice carrying a note of knowing certainty.
"Of course she looked calm. She’s Lilith. But I could tell—she was furious inside. She hates being left behind, especially when it comes to something involving Adam." She let out a soft, wicked chuckle. "She’s probably brooding about it right now, planning her revenge for next time."
Adam’s voice came out in a low, warning murmur, his eyes scanning the path ahead.
"Quiet. We’re getting close."
Alice fell silent, but her tail continued to sway with barely contained amusement as they moved deeper into the woods.
Azrynn’s voice came from behind, barely a whisper as she kept pace with them, her yellow eyes sweeping the shadows.
"Why did we have to do rock-paper-scissors, anyway?"
Adam let out a low, measured breath, his voice carrying a note of patient explanation.
"Because I didn’t want us all to come. It would have been too conspicuous. And rock-paper-scissors was the fairest way to decide who stayed behind."
He paused, his gaze flickering to Alice.
"Lucky for us, Alice has the inventory space to carry whatever we find. And you’re the most agile and quiet among us. This way, we can move fast and stay hidden."
Alice’s tail flicked with quiet pride at his words, a faint smile of satisfaction curling her lips before she quickly masked it. She said nothing.
Azrynn nodded slowly, her voice carrying a note of quiet understanding.
"That makes sense. A small, fast group is much easier to keep hidden."
They moved deeper into the woods, the sounds of the outpost fading behind them, the forest growing quieter around them. Then Adam’s hand shot up, signaling a halt. He turned to Alice, his voice low and deliberate.
"Alice. The ruby. Take it out."
Alice’s ears twitched, but she didn’t question him. Her hand disappeared into her Void Locker, and she pulled out the small, polished ruby that Selena had given them. The gem pulsed faintly in her palm, a soft, warm glow that seemed to breathe in rhythm with something unseen.
A familiar chime echoed in Adam’s mind as the system analyzed the object in Alice’s hand.
[Ruby of Proximity – Rare]
[Description: A finely crafted ruby enchanted with a minor detection spell. When the ruby is within 200 meters of a specific matching object or location, it emits a steady, warm glow. The glow intensifies as the distance between the ruby and its paired object decreases.]
Adam’s crimson eyes fixed on the ruby, studying its glow with quiet intensity. His voice came out in a low, satisfied murmur.
"It’s glowing. Selena’s stash is close."
Azrynn leaned in, her yellow eyes narrowing as she studied the ruby’s pulsing light. Her voice carried a note of cautious curiosity.
"How close is ’close’?"
Adam’s gaze swept the treeline ahead, his senses reaching outward. His voice was measured, thoughtful.
"Close enough that we should start being careful. The ruby doesn’t give exact distances, but if it’s glowing this steadily, we’re within a few hundred meters at most."
