Chapter 449: Kissing the deity

"To kill three dukes and return to claim my pardon and elevation. To make sure the people I care about are safe and thriving. Beyond that—" he shrugged "—I’ll figure it out when I get there."

Haryntha smiled, clearly amused by his continued evasiveness.

"You’re very good at giving answers that sound substantial but actually reveal very little. I suspect that’s a skill you’ve cultivated deliberately."

"Maybe I just don’t like being analyzed too deeply," Jolthar replied, his own smile becoming slightly more playful.

"Or maybe I’m just enjoying the company of an attractive woman and don’t want to ruin the mood by being too serious about existential questions regarding my motivations and goals."

The shift in tone caught Haryntha slightly off-guard. Her eyebrows rose fractionally, surprise and amusement mixing in her expression.

"Are you hitting on me, Baron Kaezhlar?"

"That depends," Jolthar replied smoothly, turning to face her more fully.

"Is it working?"

Haryntha laughed—a genuine sound of delighted surprise.

"That’s remarkably bold of you. I’m a divine being who could kill you with a gesture; I’m helping you survive a suicide mission, and we’ve known each other for less than a day. Most men would be considerably more... deferential."

"I’ve never been very good at deference," Jolthar said, moving slightly closer.

"And I’ve found that life’s too short and too unpredictable to waste opportunities. You’re beautiful, intelligent, powerful, and currently standing very close to me on a ship suspended in clouds while we travel toward almost certain danger. Seems like the perfect time to acknowledge mutual attraction if it exists."

"Mutual attraction?" Haryntha repeated, her tone carrying challenge alongside the amusement. "You’re assuming I’m attracted to you."

"Am I wrong?" Jolthar asked directly.

Haryntha studied him for a long moment, her divine senses clearly assessing him on multiple levels—physical, energetic, intentional. Then she smiled, an expression that carried heat alongside humor.

"No, you’re not wrong," she admitted.

"Which surprises me more than it probably should. I don’t usually find mortals particularly compelling in that way—they’re so fragile, so temporary, and so limited in their understanding of existence beyond immediate sensation."

"But?" Jolthar prompted.

"But you’re different," Haryntha continued, her voice dropping slightly.

"You’ve fought deities and survived. You transform into creatures of legend. You refuse to bow to power simply because it demands submission. You’re mortal but approaching something beyond mortality through sheer stubborn determination and exceptional capability. That’s... intriguing."

She moved closer, close enough that Jolthar could feel the warmth radiating from her divinely touched body and could see the complex patterns in her eyes that suggested depths of experience far beyond human lifespans.

"So yes," she said quietly, "there’s attraction. The question is whether you’re bold enough to act on it or if your flirting is just verbal entertainment while we pass the time."

Jolthar’s smile widened, recognizing the challenge for what it was.

"That sounds like a dare."

"Maybe it is," Haryntha replied, her own smile becoming more pronounced.

"I dare you to kiss me, Jolthar Kaezhlar. Right here, right now, in the sky between earth and heaven. Show me if your boldness extends beyond words."

For just a moment, Jolthar hesitated—not from fear or uncertainty, but from the recognition that crossing this line would fundamentally change the dynamic between them, would add complexity to an already complex situation.

But then his nature reasserted itself, the part of him that had always chosen to act rather than overthink and to embrace opportunities rather than calculate all possible consequences.

He moved forward, his hands finding her hips and pulling her against him with firm confidence. Haryntha’s breath caught slightly at the directness of the contact, her divine nature making her acutely aware of every point where their bodies touched, every subtle shift in energy and intention.

Then Jolthar kissed her.

It was nothing like what Haryntha had expected.

The kiss consumed her.

Jolthar’s mouth claimed hers with a hunger that felt older than kingdoms, deeper than any mortal should possess. He kissed her as though she were the only fixed point in a spinning universe—as if the endless sky, the drifting clouds, the humming ship, and the toy-like world far below had all dissolved into smoke.

There was nothing else.

Only the devastating press of his lips, the slow, deliberate way they moved against hers, and the shocking tenderness threaded through the raw passion.

It was a contradiction that shattered her expectations: a young man’s mouth worshipping her like she was both altar and offering.

Heat exploded low in her belly. Haryntha, who had tasted the kisses of gods and heroes across centuries, felt her divine composure crack like thin ice over a flame.

A low, involuntary sound escaped her throat—half gasp, half moan—as his tongue brushed hers, coaxing, demanding, savoring. The sensation spiraled through her, golden and electric, igniting every sacred nerve the Fates had woven into her immortal form. Her body, usually so perfectly controlled, betrayed her. Her thighs tightened. Her breasts grew heavy and aching against the thin fabric of her robes.

The eternal flame she guarded deep within flickered wildly, responding to him as though he were the only spark it had ever truly wanted.

His hands gripped her hips with firm, possessive certainty, dragging her flush against the hard length of his body. The contact stole what little breath she had left. She felt the thick, unmistakable ridge of his arousal press against her lower belly, and the knowledge that a mortal could make a goddess tremble like this sent a fresh wave of liquid heat pooling between her legs. Her own hands rose of their own accord, clutching his shoulders, fingers digging into the muscle beneath his tunic as if she might anchor herself there. She pressed closer—closer—until there was no space, no air, only the searing alignment of hips and chests and the frantic beating of two hearts, one mortal, one divine.

The world dissolved.

Haryntha’s legendary restraint—centuries of cool dignity, of never yielding, of keeping the sacred fire banked—frayed at the edges.
