Chapter 19: New Quest and Cave
The 300 Ink from the quest arrived while I was still in the cave.
[Current Ink: 321.]
I opened the shop.
The skill tree had reorganized itself into new entries where blanks had been before. I scrolled past the basics, past the intermediates I’d been looking at for two weeks, and stopped on something that hadn’t been there yesterday.
[Hell’s Fire → 300 Ink.]
[Warning: Incompatible with Bronze-grade mana hearts. Recommended minimum: Silver.]
[Purchase anyway?]
I looked at the warning for a while.
Then I looked at my Ink count.
I had one left after this.
[Purchase confirmed.] [Hell’s Fire acquired.]
I left it alone for three days.
The ambient mana near the back of the cave had shifted colder, sitting differently than before. Luna didn’t appear. I didn’t call for her.
On the fourth morning I went out earlier than usual.
The air was cold in the settled way it gets when nothing has moved through a place all night. I ran the usual drills first. Wind Blade twice, both clean.
The mana heart was cycling steadily by the time I finished.
Then I stopped.
Stood in the center of the yard.
Let the breathing come all the way down before I reached for the new skill.
It didn’t sit where the others did. Further back, heavier, like it was waiting to see if I actually meant it.
I reached anyway.
The cold in the air pulled inward rather than spreading toward the point between my hands. Slow. I kept the breathing even and didn’t rush it.
The flame came.
Black. The ground beneath it went grey in a ring, the grass turning the color of ash before ash properly forms.
I held it.
One second.
Two.
Three.
Then the weight arrived, pressing down on everything in my chest at once. My knees hit the ground. Both hands went to my chest automatically.
Something came up.
Blood. One mouthful. Then nothing.
The flame was already gone.
[ERROR: Body mana fully depleted.] [Emergency recovery mode activated.]
I stayed where I was for a while. The ring of blackened ground was still there, half a meter across, grass grey at the edges. My hands were shaking.
Idiot, I thought. Bronze heart. High-rank fire.
I sat down in the lotus position and started pulling mana back in.
It came differently.
Faster. Deeper filling places it hadn’t reached before,
I kept breathing and didn’t stop it.
"System," I said.
The panel came up. Below the usual status lines.
[NEW MISSION UNLOCKED.]
[Designation: Contract Verification.]
[The cave remembers what passes through it. It does not remember you.]
[Action required: Proof of presence. North corner. Before the next new moon.]
[Reward: ???]
[Penalty: The cave forgets you entirely.]
I read it twice.
The cave remembers what passes through it.
I’d been training in this place for weeks.
Whatever had drawn the silence around the cave and kept daylight from finding the path hadn’t registered me. I was still a guest using someone else’s room without signing the ledger.
I closed the panel and went hunting instead, because standing in a yard thinking about cave metaphysics wasn’t going to fix a Bronze heart.
***
There were reports of mutated beasts further into the forest. Not from anyone official Sebastian had mentioned it once.
I found the first one within an hour. A One-Horned Wolf, alone, which was either good luck or the kind of bad luck that comes in groups.
I opened with Fireball and pulled water from the air on the follow through thin mist, enough to cut visibility.
Wind Blade low, at the legs. The wolf buckled, stumbled, and I closed the distance with the practice sword already moving.
One cut.
The head came off clean. The body stayed upright for a full second before it figured out what had happened to it, blood spraying in an arc before the legs finally agreed and it dropped.
I stood there a moment looking at my own hands.
One month ago I couldn’t finish a push-up.
I kept moving. Slimes, more wolves, three One-Horned Rabbits that were faster than anything that small had any right to be. By the time the light had shifted I was covered in blood that wasn’t mine. Mostly.
I heard water somewhere off the path.
The pond was tucked between the trees. Still surface. No wind ripple. It looked ordinary right up until I got close enough to feel what was coming off it.
The mana density was not scattered the way it usually sat in air. Concentrated. Pressurized.
I stood at the edge of it for a minute.
Then I crouched and drank some.
Mana potion. It tasted exactly like a mana potion which meant either this forest had produced something that refined itself, or the world had a sense of humor about what counted as resources.
My cuts had started closing before I stood back up. The deep exhaustion in my muscles didn’t disappear, but it loosened enough that I could feel the difference.
I filled my bottle and marked the location in my head before heading back.
[Suggestion: Make blood pact with cave.]
***
The cave was the same in the dark as it always was. The path found me instead of the other way around. The silence started a hundred meters out, and the air carried the same strange weight it always had.
I went to the north corner.
Found a sharp edge of rock at knee height and made a small cut on my left hand. Held it over the floor and let it bleed.
Fifteen minutes.
I drank the pond water when the dizziness came. It passed the worst of it. The weakness stayed.
When I looked down, the cave floor was clean.
Not dried. Gone. Like nothing had touched it.
I stared at the floor.
The mission panel had updated, though it hadn’t made a sound.
[Contract Verification: COMPLETE.]
[The cave remembers you now.]
[Reward: Access granted → restricted depth.]
[Something has been waiting.]
I didn’t know what that meant.
"What are you planning," I said.
Nobody answered.
The cave floor stayed clean.
I wrapped my hand and went home.
