Chapter 691: Chapter 648: The Higher-ups Know He’s Here to Deal with Me! (2)_2
Subconsciously springing to his feet, Ye Jizu reached for his cell phone. He had intended to step outside to take the call, but upon seeing the caller ID, he froze and immediately swiped to answer.
"Master Jizu, we’ve identified the mastermind behind the sniper attack at the airport!"
The moment the call connected, a grim voice came through from the other end.
"Don’t report to me yet. Where are you now?" Ye Jizu asked, instinctively glancing at Qin Fan.
"Master Jizu, I’m in Tianhe!" the man on the line responded, a note of confusion in his voice.
"Get to the Ye Family estate at once!" Ye Jizu ordered.
Although the man was bewildered and had no idea what Master Jizu intended, he quickly replied, "Yes, Master Jizu, I’ll head over right now!"
Ye Jizu hummed lightly and hung up.
"What’s wrong?" Ye Congjun asked, furrowing his brow.
"Old Man, I didn’t get a chance to tell you. When we went to pick up Master Qin at the airport, there was a small incident. A sniper launched an assassination attempt on Master Qin! My man has now identified the mastermind, and I’ve told him to come here to deliver his report in front of Master Qin," Ye Jizu said hastily.
"What?" Ye Congjun exclaimed in shock, his eyes widening.
"Yes, it happened right as Master Qin was walking out of the airport to meet us! The shot came from the rooftop of an industrial building, from a sniping range of nearly two thousand meters! But he didn’t succeed. Master Qin reflected the bullet, and it struck the sniper right between the eyebrows, killing him instantly. My people had previously investigated his background. He was an elite soldier in a special forces brigade but was dismissed from the army for repeated disciplinary violations. Afterward, he became a mercenary overseas. Years passed, and we didn’t expect him to suddenly return to Huaxia, let alone to carry out an assassination attempt on Master Qin! What puzzles me is, an individual like him should be placed under immediate surveillance upon returning to Huaxia. How could he carry out his plan so smoothly? My people checked; he returned openly on a commercial flight!"
Facing Old Man Ye’s outcry of shock and anger, Ye Jizu continued gravely.
However, upon hearing this, Ye Congjun’s furious expression faltered before turning solemn. He seemed to sense something amiss in Ye Jizu’s words. At this, he fell silent for a moment.
But if he could sense the strange atmosphere, how could Qin Fan not detect the oddity of the situation? After all, he was an old monster who had lived for hundreds of years. If he couldn’t even see the strings being pulled behind this incident, he would have died countless times over by now.
"Simple. The higher-ups knew he was coming for me," Qin Fan said with a smile, though a chill ran down his spine. Although the Forbidden City hasn’t truly moved to sanction me yet, if this is proven true, it’s certainly food for thought.
A man dismissed from the military who then became a mercenary abroad was undoubtedly someone who should be under tight surveillance. It stood to reason that a person with such a high-risk profile couldn’t enter Huaxia without being detected. He probably flew back openly on a commercial flight for that very reason; he knew the system and that trying to hide would be pointless, especially since his target was no nameless nobody.
Yet under such circumstances, he was still able to calmly carry out a sniping operation not far from the airport. To say there was nothing suspicious about this? Impossible!
Ye Congjun could see it, and Qin Fan saw through it as well.
However, as soon as Qin Fan finished speaking, the parlor fell silent.
Except for Qin Fan, everyone else frowned. The implications of this information were like a sensitive trigger. It all depended on how Qin Fan would view it.
"Alright, don’t all look so glum. It’s not like you’re the target, so there’s no need for this," Qin Fan said, shaking his head and breaking the dead silence with a dismissive laugh.
"Master Qin, what are your thoughts?" At this, Ye Jizu looked toward Qin Fan, saving the elder the need to speak.
"My thoughts? Every grievance has its source. Since they hired a killer for me, they should be prepared to die. I don’t like to let my grudges grow cold," Qin Fan chuckled lightly, as if discussing something trivial. And for him, it truly wasn’t a big deal.
"This is outrageous! To hire such a killer, it’s clear they aren’t from the Third World. And to dare act so recklessly here in Jiangzhou... They’re courting death! Utterly courting death!"
Unable to contain his fury, Ye Congjun slammed his hand on the dining table. To brazenly attempt to assassinate Qin Fan on the Ye Family’s turf, especially while the Ye Family themselves were there to receive him, was a blatant disregard for their power. This wasn’t just a slap in the face; they were practically grabbing the Ye Family by the cheeks and slapping them!
"Master Qin, let me handle this! For something like this to happen in Jiangzhou while I, Ye Jizu, was hosting your welcome is a provocation against our Ye Family! Please, allow the Ye Family to handle this, Master Qin?" Ye Jizu said. As the undisputed underground overlord of Lingnan, he was determined. At this moment, he didn’t care about the identity or status of the mastermind. As long as they were a power within the Huaxia Region, he would use this opportunity to prove to the world that the Lingnan Ye Family’s methods hadn’t gotten damn soft! Even if the enemy was overseas, it didn’t matter. The third master of the Ye Family had been rooted abroad for many years. As long as it didn’t involve truly untouchable individuals or clans, there was no one they couldn’t get revenge on!
"Let’s wait for the answer first," Qin Fan said with a playful smile, shaking his head.
Trying to take me out with a sniper rifle? What absolute ignorance. In the Third World, no one would attempt something so futile, something destined for a bad end. If it were really that easy to eliminate me, Qin Fan, how would I have survived until today?
But beyond that, Qin Fan found it difficult to come up with any specific suspects. After all, on his journey of putting arrogant big shots in their place, he had made more enemies than he could count. He barely even remembered the faces of those so-called powerful figures he had crushed.
With another laugh, he said, "Alright, the food’s getting cold! Let’s eat and talk!"
Although he was the guest, Qin Fan playfully took on the role of the host, steering the conversation away from the topic. His opponents had now escalated to Werewolves, Vampires, and possibly even the Forbidden City. He could no longer be bothered with the provocations of such fleas and ants.
At Qin Fan’s words, Ye Congjun’s mood shifted quickly. He laughed heartily and was the first to pick up his chopsticks. The topic of conversation gradually moved from heavy, sensitive matters to lighthearted tales of their experiences.
「Meanwhile.」
In a mansion somewhere in Jiangzhou, a young man sat restlessly in front of his computer, constantly refreshing his email inbox. Hours passed with no reply.
As he watched the night sky gradually darken outside his window, his anxiety grew stronger. The ashtray on his desk overflowed with extinguished cigarettes, many of them snuffed out after only a few puffs.
Finally, unable to bear it any longer, he dialed a foreign number. No one answered. The line rang until it disconnected, sending him into a deeper panic.
He shot up from his computer chair, switched to another phone, and dialed a number saved as "Little Li."
"Master He, your orders!" a young voice answered immediately.
"Check for the earliest flight out of the country. I need to leave!" the anxious young man said hastily.
"Master He, which country are you going to?" the other person asked, puzzled.
"It doesn’t matter which country! The sooner, the better!"
"Alright, Master He, I’ll check right away!"
A flurry of keyboard tapping followed. A dozen seconds later, the voice returned, "Master He, I’ve found one. The earliest is a flight to Bangkok at 9:10!"
"Book it for me right now!"
With those words, the young man abruptly ended the call. Panic spread uncontrollably across his face. He rushed out of the study and into the bedroom. He opened his wardrobe with trembling hands, haphazardly yanked out a few outfits to stuff into a suitcase, then grabbed the luggage and rushed out of the house.
