Chapter 1075: Chapter 1075 Shook Off Their Pursuers
Crash!
As they sped away, a shot rang out from behind. The rear windshield exploded, glass shattering inward in a spray of sharp fragments.
"Down!" someone shouted.
They all ducked just in time, shards scattering across the seats and floor as more gunfire followed. The driver swerved hard along the road, making it nearly impossible for their pursuers to take a clean shot while everyone stayed low.
"Shit! They’re glued to us!" Dave growled, realizing their vehicle was taking the brunt of the enemy’s fire. "Floor it, let’s make them eat our dust!"
The driver slammed the accelerator, and the SUV surged forward, leaving the pursuers struggling to keep up. Swerving violently along the road, they made it nearly impossible for the snipers or gunners to target the tires.
Shots rang out, and the rear glass shattered, but that was the worst of the damage. Every other attack missed, leaving them speeding away, still in one piece.
With the enemies trying to shoot out the tires, heads would occasionally pop up from their vehicles, guns raised. Dave and Luke, positioned in the last SUV, seized the opportunity to snipe at those exposed heads, aiming to at least stop the attackers from targeting their tires. If the tires went down, their escape would be impossible. They had no choice but to take calculated risks, returning fire whenever necessary to keep their SUV moving.
"Driver, just focus on driving. Everyone else, don’t waste your ammo, we might need it later, so no random shots," Luke ordered as he leaned out of the broken rear window, pistol in hand. He fired a quick shot at a gunner in the passenger seat of the car closest to them, then immediately targeted the driver.
Fortunately, the enemy wasn’t in armored or military-grade vehicles. If they had been, Luke’s shot at the driver would have been nearly impossible; the windshield would easily deflected the bullets.
It worked in their favor that both sides were using ordinary SUVs without plates, since this was a part of a joint operation between a mafia faction and the government, so no one brought official or army vehicles.
That was also why they had no hesitation in hijacking an enemy vehicle instead of retrieving their own, so they don’t feel bad leaving their previously used vehicles; there was also no risk of easy identification, and the situation was effectively mirrored on both sides.
After Luke took out the gunner and driver of one car, the car swerved violently off the road and slammed into a tree. The impact sent the driver’s body flying forward, smashing through the windshield and landing limply across the hood.
But the danger didn’t stop there. The car behind quickly took the lead and opened fire on Luke and Dave’s SUV, bullets raining down relentlessly. Luke ducked low, letting Dave take over. Despite their own SUV swerving to make them a harder target, Dave’s precise aim found the enemy’s tire.
With a single, well-placed shot, the tire burst. The car jolted violently, its nose lifting before the back flipped into the air. In a terrifying moment, it flipped over completely, landing upside down like a turtle. The car following it had no time to react and crashed into the overturned vehicle, sending a deafening crash echoing through the road.
Crash!
Another successive crash followed as they finally managed to shake off their tail. Dave shot Luke a smug look, while Luke had used two bullets to take out two enemies. Dave had dealt with the rest of their pursuers with a single, perfectly aimed shot. He didn’t hide his pride, puffing his chest out like a peacock right in front of Luke.
Luke rolled his eyes but said nothing. There was no denying that Dave’s single shot had saved them a lot of trouble. Both of them leaned back in their seats, trying to steady their breathing.
By now, the two SUVs from their convoy were already twenty meters ahead, pressing the accelerator to escape the area as quickly as possible. No one was holding back, and the vehicles roared down the road at top speed.
"That’s what you call skill! Damn, even after all these years, I’m still not rusty!" Dave declared, blowing the tip of his gun with all the confidence and smugness he could muster.
Luke and the others, by now used to Dave’s antics, let his words slide in one ear and out the other, pretending not to hear. After all, as much as his tone lacked humility, he wasn’t entirely wrong, and no one could really argue with the results.
The three vehicles emerged from the secluded dirt road onto the main road. It was late, and the suburban streets were empty, so they maintained their speed. Only when they finally reached the main thoroughfare did they allow themselves a collective sigh of relief, settling back in their seats and letting the adrenaline fade.
The drive back would take about two hours, so Dave and Luke took the chance to rest for a bit while checking their bodies for injuries. Being well-trained, they could handle minor wounds on their own.
As they examined themselves, they found mostly superficial scratches, small cuts from rolling on the rocky road or asphalt during the chase. Dave, who had a scuffle with a burly man earlier, discovered a few deeper scrapes and even some gravel and dirt embedded in his palm that he hadn’t noticed in the heat of action. His face scrunched in discomfort as a soldier handed him a roll of bandages and a small bottle of disinfectant, alcohol, and iodine.
For soldiers whose lives were constantly on the line, carrying medical supplies was second nature. Each of them kept a well-stocked waist belt, half of its compartments dedicated to medical kits and energy bars. Ammunition could always be taken from enemies, or they could rely on hand-to-hand combat if needed, but medical supplies were indispensable and couldn’t be compromised.
"Young Minister, here..." one of the soldiers in the passenger seat said, handing Dave and even Luke a roll of bandages along with some disinfectant, alcohol, and iodine. Luke and Dave took their supplies and began tending to their wounds. Both looked dirty and disheveled, but no one paid it any mind.
Dave used a dagger to carefully pick the embedded gravel from his palm. A few drops of blood welled up as the last pieces were removed. He tilted the alcohol bottle over the wound, gritting his teeth as the stinging pain washed through him, but he pressed on. Once it was cleaned, he added a few drops of iodine. With their limited supplies, this was as thorough as they could manage; a proper doctor would have to redress it later.
Although he wasn’t as trained as Zhane in field medicine, Dave quickly bandaged the wound. He cut the bandage, held one end with his teeth, and tied it securely with his hands, making sure it was well covered. When he finished, he returned the medical supplies to the soldier in the passenger seat, leaving his hand protected and ready for action again.
Luke had already finished tending to his injuries. They were minor enough that he didn’t even need bandages, so he was done far quicker than Dave.
Once they were both finished, they leaned back in their seats to rest. Now that the tension had drained from their bodies, exhaustion hit them all at once. They had burned through far too much strength trying to survive earlier.
Believing there were no more enemies pursuing them, they allowed themselves to relax just enough to drift into a light nap.
Until —
Swoosh!
Bang!
Crash —
Clang... clanggg.
A series of deafening noises followed, jolting both Luke and Dave awake. Before they could even process what was happening, it felt as if something had rammed straight into them. The SUV lurched violently to the side, pushed by a powerful force off the road, until it flipped completely upside down.
"Ugh!" Dave grunted as his head slammed against the window. A warm gush of blood ran down his temple, and the glass beside him shattered from the impact.
Luke took the brunt of the hit from his side. He felt the door cave inward, crushing into him. Pain exploded through the right side of his body, and his vision went dark for a moment as he lost consciousness. The driver and the soldier in the passenger seat had also blacked out from the force of the crash.
Fortunately, after the earlier firefight, both Dave and Luke had fastened their seatbelts before resting. Otherwise, they would have been thrown from their seats, and the injuries would have been far worse.
Everyone in the SUV had passed out, so when Dave’s door was yanked open violently from the outside, no one reacted. It was pulled again and again until it finally gave way. Luke’s side wasn’t even touched as his door had caved inward from the impact, making it useless, so they went straight for Dave’s, and currently, Dave was hanging upside down while his seatbelt was the only thing holding him from falling from his seat.
