Chapter 856 - The Malice of the Lost Continent
This was a huge surprise. Han Wu had only asked V to try on a whim and hadn’t expected him to actually detect something. At Han Wu’s request, V projected everything he saw for Han Wu and Jing Jing.
Many bizarre life forms walked across the land. Some had green faces and fangs. Some had stick-thin limbs but enormous heads. Some even had no bodies at all, just four wheel-shaped legs that rolled them forward. Others still wore sharp, triangular helmets and carried large blades.[1] These races were unlike any Han Wu had ever encountered before.
Han Wu then asked V to show the ruin.
A structure resembling an inverted pyramid stood upside down on the continent. A shadowy figure blocked the entrance. Interestingly, the bizarre life forms kept their distance from the ruin.
“These life forms are truly strange,” Han Wu remarked.
“They aren’t life forms,” Jing Jing corrected. “They’re undead.”
That made it even weirder. This lost continent teemed with masses of bizarre undead. Things were getting more interesting by the moment.
As Han Wu was about to move on from the projections, the bizarre undead started to change shape. Within seconds, they took on human forms, and perfectly normal ones at that.
Jing Jing’s translucent eyes shimmered, the spiritual fire within them flickering. “My Lord, they’ve become living life forms!”
“What?”
Life forms and undead were two distinct groups. He had never even heard of a race that could switch between the two.
This peculiar phenomenon only further piqued Han Wu’s curiosity, and he became even more determined to investigate the continent. If he could find whatever allowed the switch and apply it to his units, it would grant them functionally infinite lives, becoming soldiers who could never truly die.
Before Han Wu headed out, he made sure to take precautionary measures. He was concerned that entering the lost continent would seal his ability to summon units.
So, before entering, he summoned every World rank unit he had: Steely, the Origin of Mutation, Dark Locust, Black Dragon King Alpheus, Silver Dragon Erebard, Golden Dragon Smog, Great Lightning Dragon Bakir, Wicked Dragon Veritas, Bow God Bart, Sword God Akanzor, War Angel Amelia, Flame Demon King Karot, Umbral Mouse, Scorching Dwarf Hammie, and more.
From these, he chose Origin of Mutation, V, Steely, Dark Locust, and Umbral Mouse to accompany him. The remaining World rank units were to stay aboard the ship as guards. He also left behind an avatar as a communication relay. If something went awry on the lost continent, the avatar could coordinate a rescue.
Jing Jing summoned her World rank units as well. Eighteen Bone Dragons appeared. Wicked Dragon Veritas let out a resentful roar when it sensed the Dragon Fear radiating from the eighteen Bone Dragons. Han Wu had carved out a large portion of its dragon soul to create those Bone Dragons, making Veritas their father on a technicality.
Han Wu glanced at the protesting Wicked Dragon, and Veritas immediately fell silent. The only thing or person it feared in this world was Han Wu. In its eyes, Han Wu deserved the title “Wicked Dragon” more than it did.
Jing Jing selected four of the stronger Bone Dragons as escorts and left the rest on the ship. With the party assembled, they set off.
A hostile will pressed down upon them the moment they set foot on the continent. Han Wu’s Subcosm strength was forcibly suppressed and reduced to the Microcosm rank.
The others fared worse. The Origin of Mutation, Dark Locust, V, and Umbral Mouse were suppressed all the way down to Earthsunder rank, while Jing Jing and Steely leveled out at the Heavenrender rank. Jing Jing’s four Bone Dragons, however, were hit the hardest, dropping below Earthsunder to the Sage rank.
This suppression made Han Wu acutely aware of the lost continent’s deep, malicious intent. He also discovered that he couldn’t connect to his divine realm to summon his units. Jing Jing’s access was blocked as well.
Neither of them could summon reinforcements. Fortunately, their Divine Aspects, Divine Authorities, Divine Jurisdictions, and abilities remained intact. They also had the foresight to pack their essentials separately in spatial storage rather than leaving them in their divine realms.
“This place is strange. Everyone, stay alert,” Han Wu warned.
Jing Jing and the units nodded in acknowledgment.
“My Lord, I can send my Bone Dragons to scout ahead,” Jing Jing volunteered.
Han Wu agreed and sent Umbral Mouse along as well. Being reduced to the Earthsunder rank mattered less when it had no combat abilities. Its strong suit was in scouting and stealing after all.
Umbral Mouse and the four Bone Dragons headed out. The mouse returned quickly.
“I’ve scouted everything within a ten-kilometer radius. No major threats detected,” Umbral Mouse reported, proudly patting the chest of her child-sized human form.
“Good work,” Han Wu casually praised. “You can rest.”
Thrilled by the praise, Umbral Mouse scurried over to Han Wu and latched onto his arm before falling asleep on the spot. Han Wu couldn’t help but smile at her soft little whistling snores[2].
An outsider would easily mistake Han Wu for having adopted a daughter. Jing Jing eyed the scene jealously. The spiritual fire in her translucent eyes seemed ready to blaze. Her lord had never held her like that!
Noticing her reaction, Han Wu raised his free arm and gestured for her to come over. Jing Jing did not hesitate to grab his other arm. As an undead, she did not need sleep to recover, but holding onto Han Wu’s arm delighted her nonetheless.
