Chapter 38: Unbelievable

Trishelle

Trishelle couldn’t believe she was finally leaving this place. The black van’s engine hummed a low, steady rhythm, a promise of a future she couldn’t quite envision yet. The Bloodmoon Pack may have taken her in, but they had failed in every way to include her as a true member. As the van pulled away from the sprawling, oppressive compound, she took one last look at what had been her home for her entire life. Even though she had few good memories there, it remained the only place she had ever known, the only place she had received anything - especially the fierce, unwavering love from her beloved Rosie.

A warm pressure on her hand drew her attention. She turned to her best friend, Samuel, and offered him a watery smile. His answering squeeze told her everything she needed to know: they were in this together.

That day, when she had stood in Alpha James’s office and rejected him, the world had tilted on its axis. The memory still made her stomach flutter with a mixture of terror and triumph. The Councilwoman had immediately declared her under personal care and protection. With that decided, Cynthia opted to bring Trishelle to the Goldmoon Pack. Of course, she wasn’t going without her best and only friend. With the older woman’s iron-clad orders, Samuel was released from his duties without question, and they both packed their meager belongings into a couple of worn duffel bags. The weight of those bags had felt simultaneously light and impossibly heavy - everything they owned, everything they were, reduced to so little.

Sammy had wanted to reject the pack as well, to burn that bridge completely, but Trishelle had talked him out of it, at least for the time being. The conversation had been difficult, filled with his righteous anger and her quiet reasoning. Rosie had taught them the value of gratitude, and if it wasn’t for the Bloodmoon’s Gamma, who had seen a spark of potential in him, Sammy would not have had the opportunities that shaped him into the man he’d become.

As the vehicles made their way to the main road, Trishelle’s heart pounded with a mixture of fear and excitement. The dual emotions warred within her chest, making it difficult to breathe. She looked out the window, and just for a moment, she wished that it was the handsome Alpha Bradley who was holding her hand instead of Sammy. A blush heated her cheeks and she shook away the thought, feeling foolish and hopeful all at once. Was it possible that he was really her mate? She wasn’t sure, but this journey was a good way to find out. The uncertainty both thrilled and terrified her. Besides, Samuel had already told her that she didn’t have to stay there if she didn’t want to. She had choices now - a concept so foreign it felt like learning a new language.

Speaking of Sammy, she turned to ask him about where they were headed, but his attention was completely captivated by Alexa, who sat in the front passenger seat. It turned out Alpha Bradley had arranged for four vehicles. The first and last held their security detail, since he wanted to protect his potential Luna at all costs. The gesture had touched her deeply, though she wasn’t quite ready to examine why. He and his aunt were in the second one, with his Beta riding shotgun. The third, the one they occupied, held their most prized possessions: Samuel, Trishelle, and Alexa.

Bradley

Turning to his aunt in the quiet confines of the lead SUV, Bradley felt a knot of anxiety tighten in his stomach. The sensation was unfamiliar and unwelcome. He was an Alpha, for Moon’s sake - he’d faced down rogue attacks and hostile takeovers without breaking a sweat. Yet here he was, practically vibrating with nervous energy over one small, beautiful woman.

"Are we doing the right thing?" he asked, his voice lower than usual. He had already linked ahead to his pack, letting them know he’d met his Luna and that she would be returning with him, but he had been careful to add the caveat that she hadn’t accepted him yet. The admission had stung, even in the privacy of the mind-link. He had asked that they treat her as a visiting guest of the highest honor and make her as comfortable as humanly possible.

"Do you think she will be happy with the pack? Should we make some changes? Is she going to like the colors we painted the community buildings, or will she think it’s too much?" Bradley’s questions tumbled out, one after the other, a torrent of nervous energy he couldn’t seem to contain. His usual composure had abandoned him entirely, leaving him feeling raw and exposed.

Cynthia rubbed her temple, a small smile playing on her lips despite the headache forming behind her eyes. "My darling nephew, please calm down. You’re giving me a headache with all your worrying." His usual deep, confident baritone was reaching a higher, strained pitch with each question, something she’d never heard in all her years of knowing him. "If the Goddess paired you together, then I’m sure you are compatible. All you have to do is show her what a wonderful mate and Alpha you are. After all, you were raised by the best."

The compliment warmed him, but Bradley didn’t feel confident. It was like everything he had worked so hard to put in place for the move to his new pack grounds suddenly seemed subpar, inadequate, not nearly good enough for her. His foot bounced at a dizzying speed, a frantic rhythm against the floor mat that he couldn’t seem to control. All he could hope for was that he didn’t mess up this one, single opportunity to win Trishelle’s heart. The thought of failing her, of seeing disappointment in those expressive eyes, made his wolf whine pitifully.

In the driver’s seat, his Beta, Sam, glanced in the rear-view mirror and shook his head, a smirk playing across his face. Who knew that his big, bad Alpha would turn into such a mess over a female? He’d seen Bradley in action, from the brutal chaos of the battlefield to the cutthroat intensity of the boardroom. To see him now, fumbling like a pup with his first crush, was a rare treat for the Beta who had lost to him more times than he could count.

"Oh, come on, man," Sam teased, glancing at Bradley in the mirror, his eyes dancing with mirth. "At least she didn’t reject you on the spot. Yet."

Bradley reached forward and smacked him lightly on the back of the head, the gesture more affectionate than annoyed. "You’re not helping, you jerk."

The two began to bicker like children, trading insults with the ease of long friendship, and all Cynthia could do was pray that the ride ended quickly. She loved them both dearly, but the combination of Bradley’s anxiety and Sam’s teasing was testing even her considerable patience.

Trishelle

Trishelle wanted to ask Sammy if he was okay leaving with her, if he had any regrets about this sudden upheaval of their lives, but his attention was completely focused on Alexa. She could sense a connection sparking between them, something electric and undeniable, and it was clearly reciprocated if the bright red tips of his ears were any indication. The sight made her smile despite her own uncertainty. At least one of them might find happiness in this chaos.

Clearing her throat, Trishelle decided to break the thick, silent tension between them. The air felt charged, almost suffocating in its intensity.

"Umm... Alexa, could you tell us more about where we’re headed?" she asked, her voice gentle but curious.

She felt more than saw the way Sammy held his breath at the mere mention of her name, his entire body going still with anticipation.

"Your name is Alexa?" he asked, his voice a little rough, as though he’d been running for miles.

Alexa felt the way his voice rolled up her spine, causing a delightful shiver to course through her entire body. Although it wasn’t as deep as Alpha Bradley’s commanding baritone, the way her name felt on his tongue was enough to make her core tighten with warmth. Heat pooled low in her belly, unexpected and intense. She clenched her thighs together, a subtle, involuntary motion she hoped no one noticed, and simply nodded, not trusting herself to speak without her voice betraying her reaction.

Sammy looked disappointed not to have heard her voice, the emotion clear on his expressive face, so Trishelle tried again, playing matchmaker despite her own confused feelings. "Yes, we met earlier today, and she lent me some of her clothes." She gestured to the borrowed outfit, grateful for Alexa’s kindness when she’d had nothing suitable to wear.

Sammy leaned forward, his eyes closing as he took a subtle sniff of the air around her, trying to catch her scent without being obvious. "Beautiful," he whispered, but Alexa, with her superior wolf hearing, caught it clearly. A deeper blush spread across her cheeks, warming her skin from the inside out. Turning her head slightly, she looked at him out of the corner of her eyes, suddenly shy, and whispered back, "Thanks."

Sammy saw her lips move, thanks to his specialized training in reading body language and micro-expressions, and was completely captivated. Alexa had licked her lips just before she spoke, a nervous gesture that drew his attention, and with the dewy, glistening look, it made him feel his member swell as he imagined sucking that peachy fullness. The thought sent heat rushing through him. Their eyes met in the rear-view mirror’s reflection, and it felt like the world drifted away into the background, leaving only the two of them suspended in this moment.

Trishelle noticed the intense way they looked at each other, the connection almost visible in the charged air between them, and she immediately remembered the man and the wolf she had met. The memory washed over her with startling clarity. Closing her eyes, she recalled the feeling of being safe and cared for, protected in a way she’d never experienced before, and the look of hurt on Bradley’s face when she hadn’t been able to believe that he could be her mate. The pain in his eyes had cut her deeper than she’d expected.

She sighed, the sound barely audible over the hum of the engine. She was still feeling so confused, her emotions a tangled mess she couldn’t begin to unravel. Rejecting Alpha James was easy, because she didn’t believe for one second that they were mates. The bond had felt wrong from the start, like wearing someone else’s skin. But rejecting the pack she had lived in her whole life... that had taken a mental toll she hadn’t expected. It felt like tearing out a part of her own soul, even if that part had been diseased and toxic. The pain had been physical, a wrenching sensation that left her feeling hollow and unmoored.

Because of that inner turmoil, she knew she couldn’t make any more life-altering decisions right now. She needed time to heal, to find herself again. She hoped that Alpha Bradley could understand, that he would give her the space she desperately needed. Maybe she should talk to him and clear the air, explain what she was feeling instead of leaving him to wonder. After all, he was still kind enough to allow her and Sammy to stay with them until they figured out what their next move would be. The generosity meant more than he probably realized.

The car soon took a smooth turn, and they entered a private driveway that was freshly paved with dark, shimmering asphalt. The surface gleamed in the afternoon light, clearly new and well-maintained. Looking outside, Trishelle gasped as she saw several wolves appear out of the dense woods lining the drive. They were magnificent, their coats gleaming in the dappled sunlight as they loped easily, keeping pace with the slow-moving convoy. Muscles rippled beneath fur of various shades - silver, black, russet, and cream. She knew these were warriors of the Goldmoon Pack, and a thrill of pure excitement rose in her chest as she prepared for this new, terrifying, and exhilarating Chapter of her life. Whatever came next, she would face it head-on. She had survived the Bloodmoon Pack; she could survive anything.
