Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Wang Yi
"What do you want with my dad?"
Wang Yi asked. Since they were already inside, he figured he might as well see what they were here for.
If they made any unreasonable demands, he would just send them away on his dad’s behalf.
Yun Chendong glanced at the boy and honestly explained their situation.
There was no reason to hide it.
Wang Yi was a passionate teenager with a flair for the dramatic, and he couldn’t stand people who used back-door connections and then flaunted it.
"How could they do that? Don’t worry, when my dad gets back, I’ll definitely make him help you!"
He promised, pounding his chest.
Suddenly, something in the bag they had placed on the table moved.
Wang Yi jumped in surprise.
"What’s that?"
"Is this a gift you brought? Why is it still alive? My dad doesn’t accept gifts from people."
Mr. Yun quickly said, "It’s not really a gift. These are abalones we caught ourselves on the island. We just caught them this morning, so they’re still alive. It just took a bit of effort on our part, and they’re not worth much. We just hope you won’t mind."
Hearing they were abalones, Wang Yi’s interest was piqued.
He opened the bag and took a look. Sure enough, the live abalones were still wriggling their flesh.
"You caught them on an island? You live by the sea, so you must go fishing often, right? Is fishing fun?"
"What’s fun about it? The sun is so strong, and there’s no shade out on the ocean. Besides, fishing is hard work. Look how tan we are."
"Then how come she isn’t tan?"
Wang Yi pointed at Yun Jiao.
Yun Jiao said, "I don’t tan."
"Besides abalone, what else is on your island?"
Yun Chenxi was more talkative and got along well with a twelve or thirteen-year-old boy like Wang Yi.
"Oh, there’s a lot. Both valuable and common stuff. Just yesterday, my dad and Jiaojiao found these abalones on the island. There are also crabs, common sea snails, mussels, and things like that. There are also sea centipedes and whiteleg shrimp. And yesterday, they even caught a huge fish that weighed over sixty pounds."
Wang Yi’s eyes went wide as he listened.
’A fish over sixty pounds... how big would that be!’
"What kind of fish was it? Was it really over sixty pounds?"
"It was a Du’s Buri. That kind of fish can get really big. Some are over a hundred pounds, but we’ve never run into one that large."
"What’s a sea centipede?"
Wang Yi instantly turned into a geyser of questions, asking about this and that. In that moment, he became completely fascinated with the sea.
"Can I come visit you guys sometime when I have a day off?"
At that moment, Wang Yi wished he could just call Yun Chenxi his brother.
"Sure, but if you want to go fishing, that won’t work. Our family only has a small boat. We could take you to play by the shore, though."
"Deal. I’ll come find you guys next Saturday."
"What’s in this other bag?"
"Sea cucumbers."
Wang Yi opened it and took a look. "Sea cucumbers this big?!"
He’d eaten them before, of course, but he’d never seen sea cucumbers this huge.
Yun Chenxi said, "That’s not all. The story behind these sea cucumbers is even more amazing."
Wang Yi immediately struck a pose as if he were all ears.
Yun Chenxi said, "See my sister? A killer whale gave these to her."
"A killer whale?!"
"Aren’t killer whales giant fish from the deep sea?"
"A while ago, a killer whale was stranded on the beach in our village. A sea turtle led Jiaojiao and my little brothers to find it first. Afterward, everyone helped it get back into the ocean. We all thought the killer whale had left, but it’s still around. It even went out to sea and brought back this sea cucumber specifically for my sister."
For a moment, Wang Yi’s brain couldn’t quite keep up. "Wait, there’s a sea turtle too?"
"Haha, sea turtles and killer whales seem to really like my sister."
Yun Chenxi was extremely proud as he said this.
’Why else would that sea turtle always stick to my sister, and the killer whale come looking for her to play?’
Wang Yi stared at Yun Jiao for a good while.
Yun Jiao stared back at him.
’She’s a really pretty little girl,’ Wang Yi thought. ’Do fish and turtles judge by looks too?’
"Will I be able to see the killer whale next time I visit?"
He wanted to see it. He really, *really* wanted to!
’If I actually see it, I’ll have to show off to all my friends when I get back. They’ll be so jealous!’
"I have a camera! I’m going to take a picture of the killer whale, and the sea turtle too."
Yun Chenxi’s eyes lit up. A camera that could take pictures was a rare and fascinating thing.
"I don’t know if we’ll see the killer whale again, but you can probably see the sea turtle. We’re actually raising that fella at our house."
"Huh? You’re raising a sea turtle at your house? That’s so cool!"
"Doesn’t it run away?"
Yun Chenxi scratched his head. "Well, it’s never run away from our house. It even went out to sea with my dad and the others yesterday and still didn’t leave."
Yun Jiao spoke up, "It doesn’t dare run away."
Wang Yi was now completely fascinated by the sea turtle and the killer whale. Hearing this, he immediately asked why.
"If it runs into the sea, the killer whale will get its revenge."
"It ran into the sea this morning and got bullied by the killer whale until it came back."
"Why?"
’This little girl’s voice is so nice to listen to,’ Wang Yi thought. ’I hope she says more.’
Yun Jiao answered slowly.
"The killer whale likes to play by nudging the turtle’s shell and spinning it around in the water. So the big sea turtle led us to a place to catch fish, but they were the kind the killer whale couldn’t eat, so we had to let them go..."
Yun Jiao clearly knew more of the inside story. Wang Yi stopped pestering Yun Chenxi and started pestering Yun Jiao with questions instead.
But he didn’t get to ask much before his parents returned.
Wang Jianlin and Liu Yun were also surprised to see the people in their house.
Seeing them, the Yun family immediately stood up.
"Dad, Mom, you’re finally back! Grandpa Yun and his family have something to discuss with you."
After some simple pleasantries, it was again Yun Chendong who explained the reason for their visit.
Hearing this, Wang Jianlin’s expression darkened. "Rest assured, I will have someone investigate this matter. If someone really did take your spot, I will certainly give you a proper resolution."
"Thank you, thank you, Director. You’re a good man."
Mr. Yun gripped his hand, thanking him profusely.
"Well, we won’t disturb you any longer. We’ll be heading back now."
Wang Jianlin looked at the things on the table and quickly said, "Wait, take these with you. I can’t accept them."
Mr. Yun, Yun Linhai, and the others waved their hands in refusal.
"It’s nothing valuable, just some seafood we caught on the island. They’re good for your mother’s health. Think of it as a local specialty; it was no trouble at all."
Wang Yi said, "Dad, it’s abalone and sea cucumbers. The sea cucumbers are huge! And a killer whale gave them to my little sister Jiaojiao."
In just that short amount of time, Wang Yi was already calling her "little sister Jiaojiao."
’Abalone and sea cucumbers... that’s good stuff.’
’It would be good for Mom’s health, and the things inside are still moving, which means they’re fresh.’
"Why don’t we buy them from you, then?"
"No, no, that’s not necessary. They aren’t worth much, and it was no trouble for us."
As they were leaving, the Wang family’s elderly matriarch grabbed Yun Jiao’s hand, unable to let her go.
"Nannan, my dear Nannan, where are you going? You can’t just wander off, a kidnapper might get you."
Yun Jiao patiently soothed her, "Grandma, I’m going to school. I’m not afraid of kidnappers. If a bad guy shows up, I’ll beat them up!"
"School? Going to school is good. You’ll have a bright future if you go to school."
"Your brother went to school. His grades are excellent, and all his teachers praise him."
