Chapter 254: Chapter 254: Hidden Obligations

"You don’t owe me anything, Jessica," said Alexander, his hands tightening slightly on the steering wheel as the Tahoe tore down the empty highway. "I didn’t do any of this looking for a payout or a favor. Your daughter is... important to me, and by extension, so are you. Let’s just focus on getting you to a safe place where you can rest."

"But it’s too much, Alexander," said Jessica, a heavy tear finally escaping and tracking through the dust on her cheek. "The hospital, the apartment, and now you risking your life to pull me out of that concrete hellhole... people don’t just do things like this out of the goodness of their hearts. There has to be a reason."

Alexander kept his eyes locked on the dark asphalt, his expression remaining calm and unreadable. He couldn’t tell her the truth—that her son was Marcus, his blood-drenched comrade who was currently executing every single person left inside that water treatment facility. He couldn’t tell her that the only reason she was targeted was because of the terrifying legacy her own bloodline carried in the underworld.

"The only reason that matters right now is that you’re safe," said Alexander, his voice low and steady. "The people who did this won’t be coming back. My team is making sure of that. We’re going to a secure location where nobody can track you, and tomorrow morning, we’ll check on Ashley together."

"Ashley..." whispered Jessica, her shoulders sagging as a wave of pure maternal exhaustion overtook her body. "Does she know? Did they try to go after her at the hospital?"

"No, she’s fine," said Alexander, offering a small, reassuring nod. "I left her under tight security before I came looking for you. She thinks you’re just pulling an extra-long shift to handle the administration details. Let’s keep it that way. She’s been through enough trauma without adding this to her plate."

"Thank you," said Jessica, her voice cracking as she leaned her head back against the leather headrest, closing her eyes as the sheer fatigue of the kidnapping finally pulled her under. "Thank you, Alexander..."

Alexander glanced at her sleeping form for a brief second before pulling out his encrypted smartphone. He tapped the screen once, sending a single, localized ping to Marcus’s device to let him know the asset was secure and en route to the secondary safehouse.

Within seconds, a short text message blinked back onto his screen:

`Clean sweep. Moving to dispose of the brass. Meet you at the perimeter by dawn.`

Alexander pulled the Tahoe into the parking structure of the apartment building. He cut the engine, securing the truck inside a private stall he had never actually used until tonight.

Before opening the door, he reached down, checked his tactical pistol, and carefully tucked it back beneath his shirt, ensuring the grip was fully concealed.

Looking at the dust settling on the concrete floor, a sudden wave of anxiety hit his chest. He realized he was being dangerously careless.

He had been moving through this city with a sense of total invincibility overlooking the glaring gaps in his own security. If a group of professionals could trace Reaper’s family back to a dilapidated house, what was stopping his own enemies from finding his own family?

A terrifying thought struck his mind like a punch. His Aunt Helen and his cousin, Amy.

If an organization decided to snatch them off the street to use them as leverage against him, how could he possibly save them? He didn’t possess Marcus’s terrifying pulsing biomechanical rifle. He didn’t have the black-market connections, the scientific labs, or the sheer military-grade firepower required to single-handedly wage an open war against a syndicate. He was exposed.

"Damn it!" muttered Alexander, slamming his fist against the side of the Tahoe, cursing his own arrogance for not anticipating this vulnerability sooner.

His breathing turned shallow as the reality of the danger sank in. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his encrypted smartphone, and quickly unlocked the screen. His fingers blurred across the keypad as he began drafting an urgent message to Helen and Amy.

Alexander slid the smartphone back into his pocket, forcing his racing thoughts to settle for the moment. He walked around to the passenger side, opened the door, and carefully scooped Jessica’s limp, unconscious body out of the seat, carrying her bridal-style in his arms.

Carried her down the short hallway into the bedroom. Laid her down gently on the soft mattress, he couldn’t help but look at her under the dim ambient light. Despite the fading bruises and the stress of the evening, she was undeniably beautiful—a striking, mature blonde with an curvaceous figure that her torn clothes did little to hide. Seeing her lying there vulnerable, a sudden surge of heat hit Alexander’s lower abdomen, making his blood rush south.

He took a sharp breath, shaking his head to clear the intrusive thoughts, and turned on his heel to leave the room and give her some space.

Before he could take a single step away, a warm, soft hand shot out from the blankets, wrapping tightly around his wrist.

Alexander paused, looking down. Jessica’s eyes were still tightly shut, and her face remained turned toward the wall, her breathing slightly uneven as if she were desperately pretending to still be asleep.

"Are you okay?" asked Alexander, his voice dropping to a low, soothing murmur.

He slowly turned back around and sat down on the edge of the mattress, letting his large hand rest comfortably on the curve of her hip, giving it a gentle, reassuring pat.

"Stay with me tonight," whispered Jessica, her voice trembling as she finally turned her head to look at him, her grip on his wrist tightening. "Please... I don’t want to be alone."

"I’m not going anywhere, Jessica," said Alexander, looking into her vulnerable, glistening eyes. "I’ll be right here until morning."

"Hold me," said Jessica, pulling gently on his arm as she shifted on the mattress to make room for him.
