7. The Woman Who Throws Stones

Aurora sat curled up inside the salon of the social club, trembling with fear.

Most of the nobles in the salon were in a similar state of panic.

‘I should’ve just run straight home that day.’

The day the disaster struck.

Kraaaagh!

Aurora had seen it happen with her own eyes—a monster tore down the sign on Bluewane Street and devoured five people in one bite.

She had witnessed the infection take hold—watched as human bodies twisted and deformed into grotesque shapes. Unable to bear the sight, she’d vomited right there on the ground.

The speed at which the monsters multiplied had been horrifying. Aurora barely remembered how she’d managed to make it back to the salon.

The only fragments of memory she had left were of scrambling up the stairs in a panic, desperately fleeing the monsters that swarmed below.

Some of the nobles who had been in the salon that day had managed to escape. Others, too terrified to leave, remained trapped inside.

‘What do I do? Will I ever make it home?’

Aurora still believed—firmly—that the royal family and the police would take action soon.

It wasn’t just her. Everyone in the salon clung to that belief.

“It’s already been two days. We’re almost out of food...”

One young lady muttered, staring anxiously at the dessert table they’d been rationing from.

Because it had been a social gathering, there were plenty of desserts and drinks at first.

But dessert was just dessert. It wasn’t enough to sustain ten or so nobles for long.

‘If only I were with my brother. Things would be different.’

To Aurora, Ethan was someone who could handle anything.

He didn’t care about the etiquette or refinement that nobles valued, but he was the type to do whatever it took to achieve his goals.

Right now, he was exactly the kind of person she needed most.

Even aside from practical reasons, Aurora simply wanted to see Ethan and the Duke and Duchess of Lancaster again.

“We should never have stayed in the capital. We should’ve gone to the country house...”

“Not everywhere can be like this, right? We should’ve gone to our estates.”

Lady Seymour and Lady Cotton, huddled on the floor in fear, murmured quietly.

Their eyes drifted to a newspaper that had been discarded nearby.

Lady Cotton glanced over the headlines and said,

“For once, I’m jealous of Cherry Sinclair. I don’t know where Brunel is, but if it’s some no-name countryside village, she must be safe.”

Her words prompted another noble to voice their suspicions.

“Do you think Lady Sinclair knew? What if she predicted this disaster and left ahead of time?”
