Ethan and I set off for the underground passage immediately. Harrison stayed behind to oversee the village.

Once Ethan leaves for the capital, we’ll need to designate someone to stay at the police station, managing both the village and access to the underground passage.

Using the underground passage beneath the jail, we found the opened path Amy had mentioned.

The wall-mounted torches lining the passage were lit, sparing us the need to carry lanterns as we had before.

After walking a bit further with Amy and Ethan, we spotted Vanilla standing at the corner leading to Happy House. Upon seeing us, Vanilla raised her hand in greeting and then pointed to her side.

"The path is open, but it’s quite deep here as well. It looks like it needs more exploration, so I waited for you, Miss Sinclair. What should we do?"

Just as Vanilla said, the passage was extremely deep and shrouded in darkness.

Feeling a bit daunted, I peered into the pitch-black void. Vanilla handed me a kerosene lantern, likely brought from the mansion.

"Sir Ethan and I will go in first. You never know what might happen...."

Trailing off, I gestured to the shovels leaning against the wall where Vanilla and Amy had been resting.

"If something does happen, I’ll signal you. You two should stay here and block the passage."

"So, naturally, I’m going with Miss Cherry, right? See? Nobody even asks my opinion anymore. What kind of partner is this?"

Ethan shrugged dramatically, as if exasperated. Only then did I realize how much I had taken for granted that Ethan would always accompany me.

"Fine, you’re my partner. But what does it matter? You’re leaving soon anyway. Let’s just focus on the search."

I replied dismissively, taking the lead with the lantern in hand.

Though it was disappointing, Ethan needed to be at Aurora’s side when she met with the scientist Ezra.

‘...Couldn’t he just stay here with us for now and head to the capital once we hear from her? Aurora could pass on the news after meeting Ezra. There’s always the phone.’

Just like Aurora had called the Brunel police station, they could exchange updates.

For a moment, I lingered on the thought, only to realize how impractical it was. Even if we could communicate with Aurora for now, there was no guarantee the phone lines would remain operational.

And then there was the chaos in the capital. With the constant threat of monsters, coupled with the power struggle between Prince Lloyd and Crown Prince Theodore, the situation was at its worst.

‘Where on earth is Ezra anyway?’
