Chapter 329: Chapter 331: Baby Eleanor

Marcus checked his watch. "Four hours."

"Four hours....."

"It’s normal, Mei." Richard’s voice cut through her panic. "First babies take time."

"But she...."

"She’s fine. Damien’s with her. Dr. Martinez is the best in the city." Richard’s tone was certain. "They’re fine."

Mei sat down. Stood back up. Sat down again.

Alexander put his hand on her shoulder. "Aria is strong."

"I know she’s strong.....I just....." Mei’s voice cracked. "My baby is having a baby."

Lucy sobbed louder.

Marcus handed her another tissue.

Inside the delivery room, Damien was losing his mind in slow motion.

Four hours of contractions. Four hours of watching Aria breathe through pain. Four hours of feeling completely useless.

She was handling it like the doctor she was....calm, focused, timing everything, talking to Dr. Martinez about dilation and effacement like they were discussing the weather.

Damien was handling it like a man who’d just discovered that all his billions and all his power meant absolutely nothing when his wife was in labor.

"Damien." Aria’s voice pulled him back. "Stop pacing."

"I’m not...."

"You’ve walked the same circle forty times."

He stopped. Came back to her bedside. Took her hand.

Another contraction hit. Worse than the last. Aria’s grip on his hand turned iron-tight. She breathed through it, controlled and steady, while Damien felt his heart try to beat out of his chest.

"Aria...."

"I’m okay."

"You’re in pain...."

"It’s called labor. Pain is part of it."

Dr. Martinez checked the monitors. "You’re progressing well. Won’t be long now."

"How long?" Damien asked.

"Could be one hour. Could be three. Every birth is different."

Another contraction hit Aria and this one was stronger. Aria’s hand crushed his. Her breathing changed.....faster, harder.

"Aria...."

"I’m okay....just....stronger...."

Dr. Martinez moved quickly to check. "We’re getting close. This is transition. It’s going to get intense."

"How intense?" Damien asked.

"Very."

The next hour was a blur.

Contractions came faster. Harder. Aria’s control started slipping....not much, but enough that Damien saw the pain breaking through.

"Aria...."

"I’m fine..."

"You’re not...."

"Damien." Her voice was strained. "I’m fine. This is normal. Stop looking like....." She gasped as another contraction hit. "Like you’re going to pass out....."

"I’m not going to...."

He swayed. Actually swayed.

A nurse was suddenly there, guiding him to a chair. "Sit down, Mr. Blackwood."

"I’m fine...."

"Sit."

He sat down but the room still spun slightly.

Aria’s voice cut through the fog. "Damien Blackwood, if you pass out right now, I swear to God...."

He stood back up. Forced the dizziness away. "I’m fine."

"You’re pale."

"I’m fine."

She looked at him through pain-glazed eyes. "You are sure you are okay?"

"I’m supposed to be asking you that."

"I asked first."

"I’m fine."

"Liar."

Another contraction. The worst yet. Aria cried out....actually cried out....and Damien felt something in his chest crack.

Dr. Martinez was checking again. "Okay, Aria. This is it. Next contraction, you push."

Everything sharpened. Focused.

"Damien...." Aria’s hand found his.

"I’m here."

"Don’t leave...."

"I’m not going anywhere."

The contraction came. Aria pushed. Dr. Martinez coached her through it, calm and steady.

Damien held her hand and forgot how to breathe.

Push after push. Time stopped meaning anything. There was just Aria, and pain, and effort, and the sound of Dr. Martinez saying "Good, one more, almost there...."

Then....

A cry.

A tiny, furious cry.

Everything stopped.

Dr. Martinez lifted a small, red, screaming bundle. "It’s a girl."

Damien couldn’t move. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t do anything except stare at this tiny person who was suddenly real.

The nurse cleaned her quickly, then placed her on Aria’s chest.

Aria’s hands came up, trembling, to cradle her daughter.

The baby stopped crying. Opened her eyes.

Damien looked at his child for the first time.

Every wall he’d ever built crumbled into dust.

"Oh," he said. Voice cracking. "Oh."

Aria looked up at him. Tears streaming down her face. "Damien, look...."

"I’m looking." He couldn’t stop looking. Reached out with one shaking hand to touch the tiny fist.

The baby’s hand opened. Gripped his finger.

That was it. Every last piece of his control shattered.

"She’s...." He couldn’t finish. Couldn’t find words.

"She’s perfect," Aria whispered.

Dr. Martinez was smiling. "Dad, you want to cut the cord?"

Damien did. Hands shaking so hard he almost dropped the scissors.

Then he was just standing there, watching Aria hold their daughter, and he couldn’t remember how to do anything except feel.

"Damien." Aria’s voice was soft. "Come here."

He moved to the bedside. Sat carefully on the edge.

Aria shifted the baby slightly. "You want to hold her?"

"I...." He froze. "I don’t know how...."

"Support her head. I’ll show you."

She guided the baby into his arms. Damien held her like she was made of the most fragile glass in the world.

She was so small. So impossibly small.

She opened her eyes. Looked right at him.

Something in his chest broke open.

"Hi," he whispered. Voice wrecked. "Hi, sweetheart."

The baby made a tiny sound. Her hand found his finger again.

He was crying. Actually crying. Damien Blackwood who never cried was crying over this tiny person who’d been in the world for five minutes.

"Aria," he managed. "She’s....I can’t..."

"I know." Aria was crying too. "I know."

They sat there, the three of them, while the world continued outside and none of it mattered.

Dr. Martinez cleared her throat gently. "Have you decided on a name?"

Damien looked at Aria. They’d discussed it. Argued about it. Settled on it three weeks ago.

"Eleanor" Aria said softly. Eleanor Mei Blackwood."

Damien’s throat closed. Elaine for his grandmother whose ring now sat on Aria’s finger. Mei for Aria’s mother who’d never stopped fighting for her.

"Perfect," he whispered.

A soft knock on the door. Marcus appeared, stopping in the doorway when he saw the scene.

"Boss," he said quietly. "Everyone’s asking....."

"Send them in," Damien said. Couldn’t look away from his daughter. "Let them meet her."

Marcus nodded. Disappeared.

Thirty seconds later, the room filled.

Mei saw the baby and burst into fresh tears. Alexander behind her, eyes suspiciously bright. Richard moving slowly with his cane, face unreadable until he saw the baby and something softened.

Lucy was still crying. Julian looked awed and confused. Marcus stood in the doorway, watching everything with that quiet smile.

"Everyone," Aria said, voice tired but happy. "Meet Eleanor"

Mei reached the bed first. Looked at her granddaughter. Sobbed. "She’s beautiful. She’s perfect. Baby, she’s..."

"I know, Mom." 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Alexander stood beside Mei, one hand on her shoulder, looking at the baby with wonder. "She has Aria’s eyes."

"She’s five minutes old," Damien said. "How can you tell?"

"I can tell."

Richard approached slowly. Looked down at baby Eleanor His expression softened in a way Damien had never seen.

’’You named her after your grandmother’’ He looked at the baby, then at Damien and Aria.

"Well done," he said simply. To both of them.

Lucy hiccupped through tears. "Can I....can I hold her?"

Aria smiled. "Soon. Let her grandparents first."

Mei was already reaching. Damien handed Eleanor over carefully. Watched his mother-in-law cradle his daughter with trembling hands.

"Hi, baby girl," Mei whispered. "I’m your Pho Pho. I’m going to spoil you so much...."

"Mom...." Aria started.

"She’s my granddaughter. I’m allowed to spoil her."

Alexander leaned over Mei’s shoulder. "And I’m your Gong gong. We’re both going to spoil you."

Richard waited his turn. When Mei finally handed Eleanor to him, he took her with surprising gentleness. Looked at her for a long moment.

"Welcome to the family, Miss Blackwood," he said quietly.

Damien watched his grandfather hold his daughter and felt something settle in his chest. Complete.

The baby made her rounds....Lucy holding her and crying harder, Julian surprisingly natural with her, Marcus taking her with practiced ease that surprised everyone.

"You’ve held a baby before," Damien observed.

"Three nieces, Boss. This isn’t my first rodeo." Marcus looked down at Eleanor. "She’s beautiful. You did good."

Eventually, Eleanor made her way back to Aria. Everyone started filtering out, giving them space, promising to come back tomorrow.

Richard was the last to leave. Paused at the door.

"Damien," he said. "I’m proud of you."

Then he was gone.

The room went quiet.

Aria in the bed, exhausted, holding Eleanor. Damien beside them, one hand on Aria’s shoulder, the other touching his daughter’s tiny fist.

"We did it," Aria whispered.

"You did it. I just stood here."

"You stayed. That’s what mattered."

Eleanor made a small sound. Both of them looked at her.

"She’s really here," Damien said. "She’s really ours."

"She’s really here."

He leaned down. Kissed Aria’s forehead. Then pressed the gentlest kiss to Eleanor’s head.

"I love you," he said to Aria. "Both of you. So much I can’t...."

"I know." Aria caught his hand. "I know."

They stayed like that. The three of them. Complete.

Outside, the world continued. Inside, everything was perfect.

Damien Blackwood, billionaire, looked at his wife and daughter and knew he’d never been richer.
