Chapter 170: Chapter 172: The Hospital Visit

Mount Sinai Hospital. smelled exactly how Aria remembered...antiseptic, coffee, and that indefinable scent of controlled chaos that came with emergency medicine. She walked through the familiar corridors, nodding at nurses and doctors she recognized, feeling a strange sense of homecoming mixed with nervousness.

She’d left this place months ago to become Damien’s assistant. Had walked away from the career she’d trained for, the calling she’d felt since she was young. And now she was coming back, hoping they’d welcome her return. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

"Aria?" A familiar voice called out, and Aria turned to see Nurse Patricia hurrying toward her, her face breaking into a wide smile. "Oh my god, it really is you! We heard you might be coming back!"

"Patricia!" Aria hugged the older woman warmly. "It’s so good to see you. How have you been?"

"Busy as always. You know how the ER is." Patricia pulled back, her eyes scanning Aria’s face. "But look at you! You look amazing. Corporate life clearly agrees with you."

"I’ve missed this place," Aria admitted. "Missed the work. Missed the team."

"We’ve missed you too. Dr. Morrison asks about you all the time." Patricia glanced at her watch. "Are you here to see Director Morrison? He’s doing ward inspections right now, but he should be back in about twenty minutes if you want to wait?"

"I can wait. Is the lounge still...."

"Same place it’s always been. Come on, there are a few nurses on break who’ll be thrilled to see you."

The staff lounge was exactly as Aria remembered....worn couches, a coffee maker that had seen better days, outdated magazines scattered on the table. Three nurses were taking their break, and they all looked up when Aria entered.

"Oh my god, is that Aria?"

"I heard she was coming back!"

"Girl, you need to tell us everything about working for Damien Blackwood. Is he as intense as they say?"

Aria found herself laughing, settling into the familiar rhythm of hospital gossip and catching up. She told them about her time at Blackwood Enterprises....carefully editing out the parts about infiltrating as a maid, the lies, the complicated beginning of her relationship with Damien.

"So are you two together?" Nurse Sarah asked, her eyes gleaming with curiosity. "Because the tabloids have been speculating for months."

"We’re together," Aria confirmed, feeling her cheeks warm. "It’s... complicated. But yes, we’re together."

"Complicated how? He’s gorgeous, he’s rich, he’s powerful....what’s complicated about that?"

Where do I even start? Aria thought. With the fact that I lied to him for weeks? That he punished me by making me submit to him sexually? That he tortured someone who came after me? That I’m simultaneously terrified and aroused by his darkness?

"Just... complicated," she said finally. "But we’re working through it."

Patricia checked her watch. "Director Morrison should be back by now. You should head to his office before he gets pulled into another crisis."

Aria said her goodbyes and made her way to the administrative wing. Director Morrison’s office was at the end of the hallway, the nameplate still reading: Dr. James Morrison, Director of Emergency Medicine.

She knocked softly.

"Come in!"

Director Morrison looked up from his desk, and his weathered face broke into a genuine smile. He was in his early sixties, with salt-and-pepper hair and the kind eyes that had made him beloved by staff and patients alike.

"Aria Chen! Come in, come in!" He stood and moved around his desk to embrace her warmly. "It’s so good to see you. How have you been? How’s your mother?"

"She’s doing wonderfully, Director. Completely healthy. It’s like a miracle."

"I’m so glad to hear that. I worried about you both when you had to take time away." He gestured to the chair across from his desk. "Please, sit. Can I get you coffee?"

"No, thank you. I’m fine."

They settled into their chairs, and Director Morrison leaned back, studying her. "So. You want to come back."

"I do. I know it’s been months, and I understand if you’ve filled my position or if...."

He held up a hand, stopping her. "Aria, you were one of the best young doctors I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. Brilliant diagnostician, excellent bedside manner, handled pressure like you were born to it. I’d take you back in a heartbeat."

Relief flooded through her. "Thank you. That means everything to me."

"But I want to make sure you’re coming back for the right reasons. Are you running from something? Or running toward this?"

Aria considered the question carefully. "Both, maybe. I love the man I’m with, but I also love medicine. I don’t want to lose myself in his world. I need to maintain my own identity, my own purpose. And emergency medicine....that’s who I am. That’s what I’m meant to do."

Director Morrison nodded slowly. "And he supports this? Your boyfriend? Because I’ve seen what happens when powerful men don’t like their partners having independent careers."

"He supports it completely. Actually, it was partially his idea. He could see that I wasn’t fulfilled working in corporate administration."

"Good. Because I need to know you’re committed. That you won’t leave again if he asks you to."

"I won’t. This is my choice, my career. He understands that."

"Alright then." Director Morrison pulled out a file. " When can you start?"

They spent the next forty-five minutes discussing schedules, shifts, patient load, and the changes that had occurred in the ER during her absence. By the time Aria left his office, she had a start date....first week of next month....and a renewed sense of purpose.

She made her way to the HR department to finalize her employment paperwork. The process was tedious but necessary....background checks, credential verification, insurance forms, orientation schedules.

By the time she finished, it was nearly six o’clock. She pulled out her phone and dialed Marcus Rivera’s number.

He answered on the second ring. "Aria! How did it go?"

"I got the position! I start next month!"

"That’s amazing! We should celebrate."

"Actually, that’s why I’m calling. I’m starving and I’ve missed you. Where should I meet you?"

"How about that Italian place in Tribeca? Rossini’s? We used to go there all the time during residency."

Aria smiled at the memory. "Perfect. Text me the address and I’ll meet you there in thirty minutes."

"See you soon, Ri."

She hung up and headed to her car, feeling lighter than she had in months. Everything was falling into place. She had her career back. She had Damien. She had her life coming together in a way that felt right.

What she didn’t know was that from the moment she’d left the hospital, a man named Sab had been following her in an unmarked car, reporting her every movement to Damien.

*****

Rossini’s hadn’t changed at all in the months since Aria had last been there. The same warm lighting, the same smell of garlic and fresh bread, the same cozy atmosphere that had made it a favorite among the hospital staff.

Marcus Rivera was already there, sitting at a corner table, and he stood the moment he saw her.

"Ri!" He pulled her into a tight hug, and Aria felt herself relax into the familiar embrace of her oldest friend.

Marcus Rivera was tall and lanky, with warm brown eyes and an easy smile that had charmed countless nurses during their residency. He’d been Aria’s best friend through medical school, the person who’d kept her sane during impossible rotations, who’d celebrated her successes and commiserated through her failures.

"Marc! I’ve missed you so much!" She pulled back to look at him. "You look good. Really good."

"So do you. Though I have to say, corporate life clearly agrees with you. You’re glowing."

They settled into their seats, and a waiter appeared immediately to take their drink orders.

"So," Marcus said once they were alone again, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Tell me about your possessive and obsessive boyfriend. Is he as intense as the rumors suggest?"

Aria laughed despite herself. "More. The rumors don’t even come close."

"That bad, huh?"

"Not bad. Just... intense. Very intense. Possessive. Demanding. Sometimes overwhelming." She paused. "But also incredibly loving. Protective. He’d do anything for me."

"Including letting you come back to medicine? Because I know how guys like him operate. They want their women dependent, controllable."

"He’s not like that. I mean, he is possessive....god, is he possessive....but he doesn’t want me dependent. He wants me strong. He encouraged me to come back to the hospital."

Marcus studied her face. "You really love him, don’t you?"

"I really do. Even when he terrifies me. Even when I’m not sure I fully understand who he is. I love him."

"Terrifies you how?"

Aria hesitated. How much could she tell him? How much could she reveal about Damien’s darkness without betraying his trust?

"He’s just... very powerful. Very ruthless in business. And he’s extremely protective of me. Sometimes that protection manifests in ways that are....intense."

"Intense like ’I’ll buy you flowers’ or intense like ’I’ll destroy anyone who looks at you wrong’?"

"The second one. Definitely the second one."

Marcus whistled low. "Well, as long as he treats you right. But Aria....if he ever crosses a line, if you ever need help getting away from him...."

"I won’t. Need to get away, I mean. He’s not abusive, Marc. He’s just... complicated. And I’m choosing to love all of him, complications included."

Their food arrived, and the conversation shifted to lighter topics. Marcus told her about his own experiences over the past months....a rotation in pediatrics that had been both heartbreaking and rewarding, a disastrous date with a nurse from cardiology, his plans to specialize in emergency medicine like Aria.

"That’s actually why I’m coming back to Mount Sinai.," he said, twirling pasta around his fork. "Director Morrison offered me a position starting next month. We’ll be working together again!"

Aria’s face lit up. "Really? Marc, that’s amazing! We’re both starting next month?"

"Looks like it. Just like old times. You and me, saving lives and living on terrible coffee."

"I can’t wait. I’ve missed this. Missed working with you."

They clinked wine glasses, both smiling, both genuinely happy for the first time in months.

What Aria didn’t see was the photographer across the street, hired by Sab to document the dinner. Didn’t see the camera capturing the moment when she and Marcus had hugged outside the restaurant. Didn’t see the photo being sent directly to Damien’s phone.

But she would feel the consequences soon enough.
