Chapter 145: Chapter 147: The Aftermath

Aria stared at Richard Blackwood, certain she’d misheard.

"I’m sorry.....what?"

"I said welcome to the family. Are you deaf or just shocked?" His eyes twinkled with amusement. "Though I suppose shock is warranted. You expected me to reject you."

"Everyone in that dining room expected you to reject me."

"Everyone in that dining room is a snob who mistakes breeding for character. I didn’t build an empire by valuing the right last name over the right qualities." He stood, moving to the window. "Do you know what I see when I look at you?"

"Someone who used the wrong fork four times?"

He laughed....a genuine, warm sound. "I see someone who reminds me of my late wife. Catherine wasn’t born into this world either. Daughter of a factory worker, put herself through college, had no idea which spoon to use for soup. But she was brilliant and kind and strong. And she made my son....Damien’s father....happier than I’d ever seen him."

Aria felt her throat tighten.

"The old guard hated her at first. Said she wasn’t suitable. Said my son was throwing away his legacy. But Catherine proved them wrong by being exactly who she was. No pretense. No apology. Just... honest." His voice softened. "She died when Damien was ten. Breast cancer. My son never recovered. Died in a car accident three years later that everyone pretended was an accident but we both know was suicide."

"I’m so sorry."

"Damien was thirteen when I became his guardian. Angry, grieving, convinced love was weakness because it had destroyed his father. I raised him to be strong. To be calculating. To never let emotions compromise judgment." Richard turned back to her. "I created a brilliant CEO and a lonely man. Until you."

"Me?"

"You made him feel again. Made him risk again. Made him remember that strength and vulnerability aren’t opposites." His eyes were intent on hers. "That terrifies me because I know what loss did to his father. But it also gives me hope. Because a life without love isn’t life. It’s existence."

Aria couldn’t speak, overwhelmed by the weight of what he was saying.

"So yes, you’re unsuitable by the standards of people like Harold Ashford. You don’t know the right wines or the right forks or the right way to address a duchess. But you know how to love my grandson honestly. And that’s the only thing that actually matters."

"I won’t let you down," Aria whispered.

"You already haven’t. Standing up to this roomful of vipers took more courage than most of them have shown in their entire lives." He moved toward the door. "Now, shall we go rescue Damien before he murders Harold for orchestrating this circus?"

They returned to the dining room to find Damien standing by the window, rigid with tension, while Harold held court at the table.

".....simply being realistic," Harold was saying. "The girl is lovely, but love isn’t enough when you’re talking about the Blackwood legacy. Richard will see that."

"Will I?" Richard’s voice cut through the room like a blade.

Harold spun around, his expression carefully arranged into pleasant inquiry. "Richard. I trust you and Miss Chen had a productive conversation?"

"Very productive. I’ve decided Aria is exactly what Damien needs. She has my complete approval."

The room went silent.

Victoria’s face drained of color. Harold’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. Mrs. Pemberton looked like she’d swallowed something sour.

"You... approve?" Harold managed.

"Completely. In fact, I’m quite pleased Damien found someone with actual substance rather than the vapid social climbers who usually throw themselves at him." Richard’s gaze swept the room. "No offense, Victoria."

"None taken," Victoria said weakly, though she looked like she might be sick.

Damien was across the room in seconds, pulling Aria against him. "You’re sure?" he asked his grandfather quietly.

"Absolutely certain. Though we should probably leave before Harold has an aneurysm." Richard clapped his grandson on the shoulder. "Come. We have much to discuss. And I’d like to get to know Aria better. Away from this den of sharks."

As they moved toward the door, Harold found his voice. "Richard, surely you see the complications. The social implications. The....."

"I see a young woman who loves my grandson authentically. Who faced judgment with grace. Who admits what she doesn’t know rather than pretending. Those are the qualities that matter, Harold. Not which fork she uses for fish."

"But the board....the investors.....they’ll have concerns....."

"The board and investors answer to me. And I answer to no one." Richard’s tone was final. "Goodnight, Harold. Thank you for the enlightening evening."

They left the Ashford townhouse in a daze, Richard leading them to his waiting car.

"I’m staying at the Plaza," he said. "Join me for a drink. Real conversation. No ulterior motives."

In the car, Damien kept Aria’s hand clasped in his, his thumb running over her knuckles in soothing circles.

"You’re okay?" he asked quietly.

"I think so. Still processing."

"He approved. My grandfather approved."

"I heard. Still seems unreal."

At the Plaza, Richard led them to his suite and poured generous glasses of scotch.

"Now then," he said, settling into a chair. "Tell me the real story. All of it. How you actually met, what actually happened. I want the truth."

Damien and Aria exchanged glances.

"It’s... complicated," Damien started.

"Everything worth doing is complicated. Start talking."

So they did. The whole story....Aria’s infiltration, her mother’s illness, the plant, the confrontation in the greenhouse, the separation, the reconciliation. Everything.

Richard listened without interrupting, his expression thoughtful.

When they finished, he was quiet for a long moment.

"That’s quite a story," he said finally. "Identity theft, trespassing, theft. Followed by obsession, sexual manipulation, and a relationship built on punishment."

"It sounds worse when you list it like that," Aria said weakly.

"It sounds honest. Which is more than most relationships in our circles can claim." Richard refilled their glasses. "My concern isn’t what happened. My concern is what happens next. Can you two build something real? Something that survives outside the intensity of punishment and forgiveness?"

"We’re trying," Damien said.

"Try harder. Because Harold Ashford isn’t going to give up just because I approve. He’ll find other ways to undermine Aria. To suggest she’s unsuitable. To pressure the board, the investors, the social circles you move in."

"Let him try," Damien said coldly.

"Good attitude. But Aria needs to be prepared. Tonight was mild compared to what’s coming. The whispers. The social exclusion. The constant judgment. It will be exhausting."

"I can handle it," Aria said.

"I believe you can. But you shouldn’t have to alone." Richard looked at his grandson. "Damien, you need to make a choice. Either you’re all in with Aria....publicly, completely, with no room for doubt....or you let her go. Keeping her in limbo while you work through trust issues isn’t fair to either of you."

The same thing Julian had said. The same thing Damien knew was true but couldn’t quite execute.

"I’m all in," Damien said quietly. "I love her. Completely. I just... I’m still working through the betrayal."

"Then work through it faster. Life’s too short for halfway measures." Richard stood. "I’m exhausted. Jet lag. But before you go....Aria, one question."

"Yes, sir?"

"If I had rejected you tonight. If I had told Damien you were unsuitable and demanded he end the relationship. What would you have done?"

Aria met his eyes steadily. "I would have told you I respected your opinion but wouldn’t leave him unless he asked me to. And then I would have fought like hell to change both your minds."

Richard smiled. "Perfect answer. Now get out of here. I need sleep. Dinner at my estate next week....just the three of us."

In the elevator down, Damien pulled Aria against him.

"You were magnificent tonight."

"I used the wrong fork four times."

"He approved. I still can’t believe he approved."

"I can. You’re everything he values.....honest, strong, kind. Everything my grandmother was." Damien kissed her softly. "Everything I need."

"I love you."

"I know. I love you too. And you’re mine. And anyone who has a problem with that can go to hell."

Relief and joy flooded through her. "You’re sure?"

"Absolutely certain." He kissed her again, deeper this time. "Let’s go home. I cant wait to take that dress off you"

As they drove through the city, Aria felt like she could finally breathe. The hardest test was over. Damien’s Grandfather approved.

But in the Ashford townhouse, Harold stood at the window, watching the city lights.

"This isn’t over," he said to Victoria.

"Daddy, Grandpa Richard approved. We lost."

"We didn’t lose. We just learned that direct confrontation won’t work." His mind was already calculating, planning. "Richard approved because she showed him honesty and strength. Fine. Then we’ll attack from a different angle."

"What angle?"

"Her past. Her secrets. Everyone has something they don’t want revealed. And Aria Chen is no exception." He turned to his daughter. "Luke found some interesting gaps in her history. Gray areas where money appeared from nowhere. Skills that suggest less than legal activities. We just need to dig deeper."

"What are you planning?"

"I’m planning to show Richard Blackwood that his new favorite isn’t quite as honest as she pretends to be. That she has secrets. That she’s dangerous to the Blackwood reputation."

"And if that doesn’t work?"

Harold’s smile was cold. "Then we make sure the board of directors has concerns. That investors get nervous. That Damien has to choose between Aria and the company. Between love and legacy."

"He’ll choose her."

"Maybe. Or maybe when he realizes the cost of that choice....when he sees what loving her will cost him in terms of the business, the reputation, everything his grandfather built....maybe he’ll make the rational choice."

Victoria looked uncertain. "I don’t know, Daddy. After tonight...."

"After tonight, we know we need a better strategy. That’s all." Harold moved to his desk, already making notes. "Get me everything you can about her time at MIT. About her hacking background. About any questionable activities she might have been involved in. If she has secrets, we’ll find them. And then we’ll make sure the right people know about them."

"What if she’s clean? What if there’s nothing to find?"

"Everyone has something to hide, Victoria. Everyone. We just need to find what Aria Chen’s hiding. And then we’ll use it to destroy her."

Because Harold Ashford didn’t accept defeat. Not when the stakes were this high.

And if Aria Chen thought Richard’s approval meant safety, she was about to learn a very painful lesson.
