Chapter 6: Food rival
After freshening up, they got to the dining table. You could tell that everyone had to wait for their arrival.
"Sorry we came late," Kathe spoke up to ease the tension in the dining table, cause she could feel the weight of Jark’s mom and Rhea’s eyes on her.
"I knew the fault came from you, cause Jark never had the habit of keeping us waiting,"
Rhea spoke with clear disdain.
"Enough!" the old lady hit her walking stick on the table, intending to scold Rhea. She turned to Kathe with a smile. "It’s okay, you are not late, I just arrived now myself."
Kathe smiled in response to the old lady’s good gesture. The maids began serving the meal. Although the meal was delicious, Kathe could feel Rhea’s eyes on her, but that didn’t lessen anything on Kathe. Instead, it made Rhea feel more jealous.
She decided to add a little play to it. "Baby, try this truffle pasta, it’s really delicious." Kathe was about to put it inside his plate when Rhea stopped her.
"I thought you knew Jark well, or don’t you know that he is allergic to truffle pasta? He doesn’t eat that."
Kathe could hear the pride from Rhea’s voice, but she herself was not someone to give up easily. She turned and faced Jark with a smile. "Baby, you never told me you were allergic to truffle pasta, cause as far as I remembered, you taught me how to eat them. Now tell me, are you allergic to truffle pasta?"
Jark could clearly understand what was going on, so he decided to play along with Kathe, but he knew that he had to pay a deadly price for that. He smiled back at Kathe before replying to her. "I’m not allergic to truffle pasta. I can never be allergic to something that comes from your hands." He took the spoon from Kathe and scooped more of it into his plate.
"Son, are you sure you are not allergic to truffle pasta? As far as I remembered, you never ate it right from your childhood. I hope you are not doing this to save some people’s face,"
Shashe, Jark’s mom, asked Jark as she also looked at Kathe with disdain.
"Your mom is right. Are you sure you want to eat that?" the old lady asked as she looked closely at Kathe and Jark. You could hear the concern from her voice, which made Kathe feel guilty, but looking at Jark, he didn’t look like someone who could have an allergy, so she decided to still play along.
"Grandma, Mom, things have changed, so have I. I now eat things which I clearly used to dislike, so there is nothing to worry about." Jark’s reply eased the tension a bit. They all waited for Jark to eat first. He looked at his plate, then at Kathe before he started eating. Soon all of them started to eat after seeing that Jark was eating his.
Rhea kept glaring at Kathe with anger, and each time Kathe met her glare, she responded with a smile, which made Rhea even more angry.
They were all still seated at the dining table after they were done with their dinner. The old lady looked at Kathe with a lovely smile, which filled Kathe with a strange warmth.
"I’m so happy that my grandson is now a married man, no more the billionaire bachelor he was tagged as online, but it also makes me sad because I was not able to attend your wedding. But that’s not a problem, I will host a banquet for the two of you, and eventually soon there will be a grand wedding for you two."
Kathe quickly ran to the old lady’s side and gave her a hug. "Thank you, Grandma. I’m so happy that you accepted and welcomed me with love." The old lady patted her shoulder.
"It’s okay. I’m just happy to see my grandson with a suitable partner. At least you should work on keeping him from looking at his phone. That will be great." The old lady teased Jark a little, so he dropped his phone at once.
Which made Kathe chuckle. She had found his weakness. "It seems someone is scared of his grandma," Kathe teased him, and the old lady joined her in laughter.
Jark raised his eyebrow at Kathe.
"Grandma, I’m tired. I need to get some sleep now."
"Yes, that’s true. You guys just arrived, go get some sleep," the old lady said as she stood up herself to get some rest.
Jark quickly dragged Kathe’s hand and rushed to their room, unknown to them that his actions angered Rhea more.
Unknown POV
In a dark, lonely room stood a lady in the dark, smoke coming out from her mouth, her face covered in a veil, leaving only her eyes and mouth open.
"What do you mean by you can’t find any trace of her?" she asked the person on the other end of the call.
"Yes, I have checked every possible way," the person replied.
"Funny how I made every trace of her to be cleared, but now I can’t even find her trace," she spoke calmly, but a trace of anger could be found in her voice.
"I’m sorry, boss. I will try harder," the person over the phone was clearly scared.
"No need to work harder." She disconnected the call and turned to face a man that was standing in the centre of the room, dressed in all black with a large hat covering his face. "What do you have to say?" she asked him.
But he didn’t reply at first. He walked to a nearby table, poured some drink into a clean glass, and walked back close to her. "Their trace was lost at the airport. You know it’s his private airport, so the poor young man won’t be able to gather enough information." He took a sip from the glass and continued again. "If you want to get information, there is a way." He took another sip and walked toward the window and opened it slightly, allowing a little ray of sunlight into the room.
"What way?" she asked him as she walked close to the sunlight.
He smiled to himself. "Simple, just plant a mole at the airport, and then we spread fake journalists around. About the journalists, you will understand that later."
"How will you be able to plant a mole at the airport that you can’t even get information from?" she taunted him.
And he chuckled at her. "That’s a piece of cake, leave that to me." He handed her the glass and walked out of the room. The moment he walked out, she took off her veil and gulped all the drink in one go.
Washington DC POV
Back at the mansion, nothing was going peacefully behind the closed door of Kathe and Jark.
"How are you feeling?" Kathe asked as she leaned her ears on the bathroom door. Jark happened to be stooling ever since they came in, and it was all because of the food she fed him. It really made Kathe feel guilty because it was all her fault.
"Will you stop banging on the door?" he replied to her from the toilet.
"No, I’m not the one, someone is at the door."
"Go check it out, it must be Thompson. Maybe he has gotten the drugs I asked him for."
"OK." She nodded.
She went to open the door only to find Rhea at the door holding a tray with a drink in it.
"What are you doing here?" Kathe asked.
But instead of Rhea replying, she sized Kathe from head to toe, hissed, and was about to walk into the room when Kathe blocked her by leaning on the doorpost.
"Can you leave my way?" she glared at Kathe.
"I ask again, what are you doing here?" Kathe asked her again, this time with a bored expression.
Rhea snorted before replying to her. "I brought this homemade drink for Jark. It will help him not to have a stomach upset from the food you forced him to eat."
"There is nothing wrong with him, so you can take your drink back. He doesn’t need it." Kathe waved her away.
"Can I see Jark first to be sure that he’s okay?" She tried peeping inside the room, but Kathe quickly covered the view.
"We were about to take our bath together before you came in, so please get lost." Kathe slammed the door in her face.
"Hey!" It was too late by the time she screamed because Kathe had already slammed the door. "I will make sure you pay." She gritted her teeth out of anger and walked away.
Back inside the room, Kathe sighed to herself. She didn’t know why she always felt annoyed around Rhea, maybe it was because Rhea didn’t like her too.
Just then, Jark walked out from the restroom, his face looking stressed as he stared at her in a questioning manner.
"I thought someone was at the door," he said.
"It was just a cat," Kathe lied as she walked past him.
