Chapter 46: Douglas vs sarah

The door was pushed open, and Thompson walked in, his face cast down.

Jark lifted his head slowly, only to meet a sad Thompson, his face looking like someone whose dignity had been stolen.

"How was your little tutorial training with Uncle?"

Jark couldn’t help but tease Thompson a little bit.

"You knew he was already at the door."

"I tried to warn you."

"But it came late." Thompson threw a small frown at Jark.

Passing him a smirk, he beckoned to him.

"Come."

Thompson walked closer, and Jark turned his laptop toward him.

"Here, I want you to check out the space."

"This is a hostel?" Thompson asked, confused.

Jark nodded at him.

"Yes. Reserve it. It will come in handy."

"I will do so."

Just as Thompson was about to go make some calls, Jark suddenly called him back.

"Has Kathe called you today?"

Thompson looked at him in confusion before shaking his head.

"No, she didn’t."

"It’s okay. You can go back to work."

Jark looked at his phone and sighed.

Back at the Douglas mansion...

One of the guards ran into the living room, straight to where Douglas was sitting. He leaned in and whispered into his ear,

"Boss, Madam is back."

Douglas nodded at him, his face emotionless, making it difficult for the guard to tell whether he was angry or happy.

Tsk... Tsk... Tsk...

The sound of Sarah’s heels clicked on the floor as she walked into the living room, and her eyes landed on Douglas, who was staring back at her.

Startled, Sarah quickly asked, "Honey, you’re here?"

"Hmm." Douglas nodded at her.

"Why? Isn’t there an important meeting at the office too?" Sarah asked as she narrowed her eyes at him.

Douglas sighed and stood up, walking toward Sarah.

"I sent someone to manage it."

Sarah’s heart raced as she kept stepping back. Douglas frowned at her little action, so he stopped walking toward her.

"Come eat. I’ve been waiting for you to come so that we could eat together. Come before it gets cold."

He turned around and walked to the dining room. Sarah was confused by his new attitude. She couldn’t help but suspect that he had an ulterior motive, but she still walked herself to the dining room.

They were each served by the maids. The dining room was filled with silent tension as they twisted their spoons around their plates. None of them was in the mood to eat.

Just then, Douglas suddenly broke the silence.

"I lost four ongoing contracts yesterday. In the process, I lost several millions."

His voice was low, forcing Sarah to look up at him, but his face was cast down toward his plate, making it hard for her to read his expression.

She didn’t even know how to empathize with him, so she kept silent, her gaze returning to her meal.

He suddenly dropped his spoon and looked up at Sarah.

"How was your health checkup?"

Feeling his gaze on her, Sarah decided to keep her eyes down.

"It was fine," Sarah replied, confused about why he was suddenly interested in her health. He had never asked how her checkup went, even if she were lying on her deathbed.

"Hmm."

He nodded at her response. He picked up his spoon again and began to eat, making the dining table fall into another phase of uncomfortable silence.

Though he had returned to his meal, Sarah could still feel his gaze boring into her.

Douglas suddenly dropped the bombshell by going straight to his question.

"Do you have any contact with Kathe, or by chance know where she is?"

Ting!

Sarah’s spoon fell out of her hand. Not expecting Douglas to ask such a question, she quickly picked up the spoon again to hide her nervousness. She scooped a large amount of food into her mouth. The food tasted plain in her mouth.

"No, I have no contact with her," she rushed her answer.

Douglas was staring at each of her actions with a mocking smile.

"Hmm, I thought as much."

Sarah frowned, confused by his reply.

"Huh?"

She was about to lift her face when she felt a strong sense of danger. She quickly bent her head down.

Crash!!!

The glass shattered around her. She quickly raised her head to look at Douglas, his face full of rage.

"I might say you are full of luck. You missed."

Sarah closed her eyes tightly.

He stood up and walked to the spot where the glass had shattered around. Sarah clenched her spoon tightly.

"I’ve lost billions each day. Why? All because of Kathe. You helped her run away. Why?"

His voice echoed behind her.

"No, I didn’t help her run away. Please, Douglas, believe me. I don’t know where Kathe is. I have pleaded with you a million times now."

She hurried to stand up to see what he was up to, but his voice thundered behind her.

"Sit down. Make sure you finish your meal, because you will need all the strength in the world for what is coming for you soon."

After saying that, he stomped out of the dining room.

Sarah sat down, her eyes filled with strong rage.

.......................

Kathe stood by the window, lost in thought, confused about why she had been feeling a strong sense of unease ever since the old lady left the room. She was back to her old dull mood, partly due to the fact that she missed Jark. The other reason was that she was confused by her mother’s sudden ghosting.

She looked at the phone in her hand for the tenth time as the machine voice kept saying that the number she had dialed didn’t exist.

"Why are you standing on your injured foot?"

Jark’s voice startled Kathe as she turned around, only to find Jark standing right behind her.

"When did you get back?"

Jark frowned at her. Instead of replying, he leaned in, scooping her into his arms.

Kathe let out a gasp, as she wasn’t expecting to be carried by Jark.

Jark walked to the bed and lowered her into a sitting position before squatting down to her level.

"You seem lost in thought. What is wrong?"

Unknown to Jark, his little action made Kathe’s heart ripple, especially with how close he was to her.

"No, I wasn’t lost in thought."

Jark raised his eyebrow at Kathe.

"You failed to notice my presence."

Due to how close Jark’s face was, she couldn’t think straight.

Jark noticed her face turning red, and a smirk curled on his lips.

Seeing Jark’s mocking smile, Kathe pushed him away, turning to the other side of the bed.

"That’s because I didn’t hear your footsteps."

"Are you sure?" Jark asked.

"Yeah."

"Who was that?"

Kathe turned to look at him, confused.

"Who?"

Jark looked at her phone briefly before turning to look at her again.

"The person you were trying to call. The number doesn’t seem to exist."

Kathe could feel her heart ready to jump. She tightened her grip on the phone.

’That means he heard the machine voice.’

She quickly looked away from Jark’s eyes.

"I was calling no one."

Jark raised his eyebrow at her suspiciously.

"Why are you lying?"

"I’m not lying. I was not trying to call anyone," Kathe said, keeping her face down.

"I will just check your phone then."

Jark pretended to reach for her phone.

"No, you don’t have to. Okay, I was trying to call you, but I made a mistake and mixed your number with another figure, so that’s why I was told the number doesn’t exist."

"Why did you lie before?"

"Nothing."

She noticed that it was still bright outside.

"You came back early. I wasn’t expecting you this early."

"I came back to keep you company. I figured out that you would be bored at home since you can’t walk around with your foot."

His voice was filled with pride.

"Who said my day was boring?" Kathe asked with a smile.

"What do you mean?"

"I had so much fun today."

"With who?" he asked as his imposing presence filled the room.

"With Grandma. She kept me company all day," Kathe said, stretching her arms out in happiness.

’So that’s why you didn’t even call to check on me at the office.’

Jark stood up and walked to the door. His sudden action made Kathe confused.

"Where are you going?"

"To the study. I have some work."

"But you said you wanted to keep me company."

"I just remembered I have some work."

He opened the door and walked out. That’s when Kathe remembered that she had told the old lady a lie about her accident, and she forgot to tip Jark about the lie she had told.

She quickly jumped out of the bed, not minding the pain as she ran outside the room.

As she ran out, she saw his imposing back.

"Jark, wait! I forgot to tell you something about Grandma."

Hearing that her words were still related to the old lady, Jark increased his pace.

Just when he was about to round the corner, the old lady suddenly came in front of him.

Before Jark could say a word, the old lady’s stick was all over him.

Making Kathe, who was hiding behind, wince in pain.
