Chapter 34: Emotion

Her mom’s voice cracked as she whispered, "My baby."

Tears were already dropping from Kathe’s eyes.

"Mom."

"I’m still here."

Kathe didn’t know if it was right for her to cry or to laugh. She didn’t expect to hear her mother’s voice.

"Mom, I’ve missed you. I wish I could give you a hug right now."

"Of course you can."

Kathe chuckled.

"How, Mom? I really miss you. I’ve always wished to give you a hug, Mom."

"Of course you can, silly girl." This time she was more serious with her voice.

"Mom, stop playing around."

Kathe couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time.

The line went silent for a while.

"Have Mom ever joked about something serious?"

"No."

Kathe sniffed at the same time, shaking her head.

"Believe me when I say that we can hug each other." Her voice was more like a promise.

"Mom."

Kathe was beginning to feel curious.

"I’m in Washington right now," she said.

Kathe stared into space with surprise. Her mouth opened as she squeezed out the little words she could say, as her surprised face was later filled with horror.

"How did..."

Knowing what her daughter wanted to ask about, she quickly cut her off halfway.

"Don’t worry. Come meet me first."

"Let me..."

She didn’t allow Kathe to complete her sentence.

"Don’t inform anyone yet."

Kathe frowned, confused.

"How did you know..."

"I’m your mother. I know your every step."

Her explanation made sense.

"But Mom, why can’t I inform anyone?"

"I want the meeting to be just me and my daughter so that I can have more time talking to you. If you are to inform extra people, I’m not sure I will get to spend time with you as much as I want to."

"So how can I meet you?"

"I will send you the address. You can give that to the cab."

"Okay."

"Hurry."

The latter part came out like a whisper.

Kathe quickly cleaned her tears as she hurried to look for a perfect dress to wear. She couldn’t hide the excitement. She had been dreaming of such a day. Everything still seemed like a dream to her. She didn’t know how to describe her feelings. Before long, the address was sent to her phone. Kathe quickly ran out of the room.

In the fit of a hurry, she almost bumped into the old lady that was coming to check on her.

"Where are you rushing to?" the old lady said, stepping aside.

Kathe didn’t know how to control her emotions as she cried and laughed at the same time.

"I will be back soon."

She was about to run out again but was stopped by the old lady’s question.

"Where are you going?" the old lady asked Kathe, confused, because the last time she had seen Kathe in the room, her condition was worse.

"I’m going to see..."

She suddenly paused on her words as her mother’s warning rang in her ear.

"I’m going to see the sky."

No one was more confused than the old lady, because who goes to see the sky?

"Going to see the sky?" the old lady asked again.

She ran to where the old lady was.

"Yes. Bye."

She quickly pecked the old lady.

The old lady was worried that she might fall down.

"Hey, slow down."

Kathe ran back, giving the old lady a tight hug.

"Thank you for the drugs. It was really effective."

She withdrew from the hug and ran away again.

"What drugs?" the old lady screamed, but Kathe had already run out, so she could not hear. The old lady frowned because she didn’t remember giving Kathe any drugs.

Kathe ran past the second entrance but was stopped by the security at the first entrance.

"Ma’am, you can’t leave without the security and a car."

"I won’t stay out for long," Kathe pleaded.

"We are sorry, ma’am, but one of us has to go with you. That’s an order that was given to us, that you can’t go out without a bodyguard or a car."

Kathe frowned.

"Who made that rule?"

"The boss made the rule."

"Is it compulsory?"

"No. It is only applicable to you."

"Why?"

"For your safety, ma’am."

"I’m not a child. I can take care of myself."

"We are still sorry."

Kathe was already getting annoyed. She never knew that she would be stopped.

"But I don’t want any one of you to follow me."

"I think you need to take permission from the boss first before you are allowed to go out alone."

She would have taken the man’s advice, but knowing that her mom wanted the meeting to be private, she just didn’t want to inform Jark, because he might insist on going with her. Knowing that she was running out of time, she decided to use another idea.

"What if it’s Grandma that sent me on an errand? It’s okay. Since you all don’t want me to pass, I will return back to her."

The security guard narrowed his eyes at her suspiciously.

"Is it the house mistress that sent you on an errand?"

"Yes, she did."

"Why didn’t you say so at first?"

"Will I be lying on her? If you want, I can call her."

Kathe felt bad using the old lady’s name to lie, but that was the only way for her to leave the mansion. She made a mental note to apologize to the old lady when she got back.

The security guard went quiet for some seconds.

"You must return back in time, and that is before Boss returns. He must not find out you stepped out alone."

"I promise to return on time, and your boss won’t even get to find out."

"Okay."

The security guard went back inside. A few minutes later, the gate was opened.

Luckily for her, the moment she stepped out of the mansion completely, she found a cab that was driving past. She stopped the cab, showed the address on her phone, and got into the cab.
