Chapter 17: Kathe’s revenge
It had been up to two weeks since Kathe’s false disappearance, and she was getting used to things around the house.
She was in the kitchen making some fries for herself when Rhea walked inside.
She wasn’t expecting to find her in the kitchen and alone. That gave her the perfect opportunity to confront Kathe. She hadn’t forgotten the old lady’s humiliating words.
"You know, you look like a maid while doing this," she said as she walked deliberately to Kathe’s side.
Kathe lifted her eyes but ignored her. Seeing that Kathe ignored her without getting angry made Rhea even angrier.
"You know, when I walked in and saw you, I almost mistook you for a maid. Don’t get me wrong, it seems like something that you were made for."
Kathe walked past her to the plate stack, taking one plate to help herself take out the fries, and she ignored Rhea again as if she were invisible, making Rhea even angrier.
She hated it when people ignored her presence, and that was exactly what Kathe was doing.
This time around, she walked close to Kathe and whispered for only Kathe to hear.
"If I were you, I would know my boundaries and leave the mansion. Who knows when next you might fall into a pool?"
Her statement made Kathe stop what she was doing as anger flashed through her eyes. She turned her head to face Rhea and stared deeply into her eyes while her hand made its way around the gas before later turning it back on again.
And that was what Rhea was expecting—a reaction from Kathe.
Her imagination was short-lived as Kathe took her fries and walked away toward the door. On getting there, Kathe stopped and turned to address Rhea.
"Mine was good. At least I got drowned in water and not burnt by fire. Jark saved me. Who will save you now?" Kathe said with a smirk.
That was when Rhea noticed the burning smell and that it was coming from her. Kathe smiled, remembering that she was the one who got her clothes caught in the gas while they were exchanging eye contact.
She popped a slice of fries into her mouth and walked out of the kitchen.
"Ahhhhhhh! Someone help! I’m on fire! Please help!"
Rhea’s voice rang out of the kitchen, catching everyone’s attention.
Even Kathe had to stop walking.
"Is she really that foolish?"
She was about to walk again, but luckily for her, she saw the old lady running down the stairs with the help of the walking stick.
Kathe quickly ran back to the kitchen, only to find Rhea running around in a burning dress, and the fire had already spread around it.
"Fool," Kathe murmured as she quickly took out the fire extinguisher that was hanging on the wall, spraying it on Rhea until the fire went out.
The old lady happened to walk in at the moment Kathe extinguished the fire before the maids ran inside.
"Kathe, are you okay?"
The old lady rushed to Kathe’s side, checking her body over and over again.
"I’m fine, Grandma. I happened to hear Rhea cry. Luckily, I was close, so I rushed in to help. Nothing happened," Kathe faked, but in her heart, she felt unlucky. She was the one who set her enemy on fire and still helped her out.
"You witch!" Rhea yelled after seeing the amount of burns on her body.
"Language, Rhea!" the old lady yelled. "Is that the appreciation you are to show her for saving your life?"
"But Grandma, she..."
"She saved you," the old lady interrupted her.
"Grandma, I..." Rhea tried to argue back.
"Apologize and thank her," the old lady commanded, giving off an air of authority that even Kathe couldn’t ignore, and she made a mental note never to make the old lady angry.
"I’m sorry for my harsh words," she gritted the words out.
For some odd reason, Kathe enjoyed it as she nodded her head, accepting the apology and taking it as one for the harsh words Rhea had said to her in the kitchen earlier.
"And..." the old lady trailed off.
"Thank you for saving my life."
Anger was written all over her face as her chest heaved heavily.
"No need to thank me. We are sisters, after all, and you would do the same for me if I was in any trouble," Kathe spoke softly with the most innocent tone ever.
Even Rhea could confess that she hadn’t seen anyone as cunning as Kathe. To make matters worse, the old lady looked at Kathe with admiration.
"Selene, take her to her room and call the doctor to check up on her."
Before the maid could walk up to her, Rhea stormed out of the room angrily, and the maid had no choice but to follow behind.
"Thanks for saving her."
"It’s nothing, Grandma. We are family, after all."
The old lady nodded at her.
"Come, let’s leave the kitchen."
"I will come out soon. Let me turn off the gas."
The old lady nodded at her with a smile. Kathe felt a pang of guilt. First, it was the marriage lies; secondly, the old lady trusted her blindly.
During the afternoon after the fire incident, no one had been more excited than Kathe.
She was strolling around the mansion when she spotted a room and decided to check it out since Jark wasn’t around to keep her company. He had left for work, and she was getting bored staying at home.
When she walked into the solarium, she was almost blinded by the colorful flowers that were planted around.
The warm sunlight reflected throughout the room, and with its rich cream-colored paint, this was the first time Kathe had walked into that section of the mansion. It seemed private.
Just when she was about to touch a flower, she heard someone’s angry voice at the door.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
Kathe turned around to look, only to be met with an angry, furious face that looked ready to explode at any moment.
