Chapter 13: Hope you found her. Trap Two

Jark looked up at him briefly, making the man shrink backward, but Jark had no intention of scolding him. He had to explain things to him.

"This is why they are smarter than you all. Look closely."

Jark raised his hand and pointed to the middle of the screen. He had paused the footage on a blurry screen.

"If you look closely, you will notice that one car stood still at the center, which I’m sure was the cab. The rest of the two kept circling around it, but the third one was the only one that was close to the cab."

The security guard’s eyes widened as he understood what Jark was explaining, and he couldn’t help but exclaim,

"Which means two things."

Jark nodded at him as he tapped his finger on the table. The room went silent because they knew clearly that he was thinking. After tapping on the table for some minutes, he stopped, but his eyes were still fixed on the blurred image.

"It means that either Kathe was still in the cab, or she was taken into the third car by them," he said after calculating for some time.

"What are we going to do now, boss?"

"We follow them. Take some men with you and follow those cars while I follow the middle cab."

"Should I go call Thompson to come along with you?" the guard asked because Thompson always accompanied Jark everywhere.

"Don’t. I will go alone."

Jark waved his hand at him. With that, he left the room and went to the car lot and selected one of his fastest cars and turned on the GPS, tracking the third cab.

The rest of the bodyguards left, following the three cabs’ locations. With the help of the GPS, he was able to track the cab.

For some odd reason, he felt that something was off, but he kept driving toward the direction.

He got to where the GPS pointed, meaning that the car was stopped there. Jark drove at full speed to get to the cab’s location. He finally got there, which was at the outskirts of the city.

Something was not right, and he knew it.

He was about to step down from the car when he got a call from one of the guards.

"Boss, we tracked the cabs, but each of them got parked on different highways, and no one was inside the cabs."

"It’s okay. You all can get back home."

"Okay, boss."

Jark disconnected the call and returned his phone to his coat. He wasn’t surprised that no one was found. He already knew that would be the outcome.

He picked up his gun and went out of the car.

When he stepped out, he saw the cab parked. The passenger door was open. He walked with caution to where the cab was parked, but no one was in the car. He studied the car for a little longer, and no sign of struggle was found.

He got the odd feeling again that something was wrong, not in a bad way but like a deliberate setup.

He stepped away from the cab, and that was when he noticed there was an old warehouse too.

He was about to leave again when his phone started beeping. He took it out to find that his GPS was still tracking the cab, but this time toward the warehouse direction, even though he was standing beside the cab already.

He decided to go check out the warehouse to confirm his suspicion.

This time around, he walked slowly and cautiously in case a trap was set, but everything went smoothly. No sense of danger or anything.

He was about to leave when his eyes caught something in the shadows.

He walked closer and found someone sitting on a chair with a black sack covering the person.

Without wasting time, he reached out his hand and removed the sack, but surprisingly, it wasn’t a person sitting there but rather a mannequin with words written on a piece of paper stamped over its head.

’Hoped you found her ’ with a laughing emoji on it.

Just as he was processing his anger, his phone rang, and it was a call from the head of security.

"Sir, madam is back home." sounding half excited and nervous.

"Okay." his tone flat.

After ending the call, Jark punched the mannequin’s head, detaching it from the body. He walked out of the warehouse angrily.

He knew that someone was playing a cat-and-mouse game with him.

His phone rang again by the time he got to his car. It was a call from an unknown ID displayed on the screen.

"Hello, Jark."

A woman’s voice came through the phone.

"I should have known it was you," Jark replied calmly.

"Nothing serious. I decided to take you on a tour of your own city. You can take it as a road trip."

She chuckled in mockery.

"I highly appreciate the tour. How could I have discovered such a lovely location? I’m planning on starting my business here soon. Once again, thank you. But I think that the person who is deeply in need of a tour is you because you have been crawling in your hole for decades now. I bet it has been long since you’ve seen sunlight."

Jark teased back.

His words had indirectly hit her sore spot.

"Rends-moi la fille. C’était le deal. Tu la remènes, et il n’y aura pas de sang."

[ Give me back the girl. That was the deal. You bring her back, and there will be no blood.]

Her voice sounded more dominating in French than before in English.

"Nous savons tous les deux que je baigne dans le sang. Elle est à moi maintenant. Si t’as un problème avec ça, blâme ton foutu deal."

[We both know I swim in blood. She’s mine now. If you have a problem with that, blame your damn deal.]

Jark replied with more ease.

Her voice tightened as she replied,

"Tu joues avec le feu, Jark. Le sang te plaît, mais la guerre te coûtera plus cher que cette fille."

[You’re playing with fire, Jark. You like blood, but war will cost you more than this girl.]

She was already losing control, and Jark liked it.

"J’ai horreur des menaces. Celle-là, je la garde comme un compliment."

Jark replied in an amused tone before disconnecting the call himself.

"How incompetent are the people working with me?"

He threw his frustration at the wind.

’He really needed to punch someone,’ he thought to himself as he walked into his car, speeding back to the mansion’s security quarters.

The security quarters were now calmer than earlier, but everything still remained a mystery to them.

Jark stormed into the quarters. They were all startled because they weren’t expecting him, especially with the look on his face that screamed murder.

"Boss... You are here... I—"

Jark didn’t wait for him to complete his sentence before punching him in the face, causing the guard in charge to bleed from his nose.

The rest of the guards stepped back to avoid their boss’s wrath.

"Play me the CCTV footage again, this time from the mansion," Jark ordered.

The CCTV footage was replayed again, this time from the mansion, and Jark watched closely.

The cab which Kathe had entered went south, while the one they had mistaken for the cab went east.

The room went silent like a graveyard after watching the footage.

Jark turned his head to look at him again. The guard quickly shrank backward, avoiding Jark’s glare, but he noticed that Jark was still staring at him.

"Boss, we didn’t check that footage. We... didn’t think that anyone would dare switch at the mansion. It’s our mistake, boss. You can punish us."

The rest of the guards glared at him because of his last statement.

"Fools."

Jark threw the remark at all of them and went out of the quarters.

He felt a little better after punching someone, but he needed to kill someone to feel more at ease.
