Chapter 868: 868. Convenient Would Mean I Look Competent, This Isn’t That

"Rex," she gasped, the word a strained, melodic thread of sound fighting through the crushing pressure of his hand.

Her eyes searched his, not with the gaze of a superior, but with the desperate focus of someone trying to navigate a storm. "Rex... put me down... so I can tell you... before the words... fail me."

She wasn’t just asking for air; she was asking for the dignity required to speak the truth.

"You had a goddamn domain full of warning signs available to you!" Rex’s voice didn’t explode this time; it dropped into a low, vibrating register of pure, concentrated venom.

It was the sound of a predator deciding exactly where to bite. "You had months. You had every single conversation we’ve ever had in this fucking space."

"And the first time the truth reaches my ears is after the damage is done? After the world has already started shifting under my feet?"

’She’s lying,’ a dark voice hissed in the back of his mind. ’She’s hiding the scale of it to keep you from losing your mind.’

’She’s treating you like a tool that needs to be kept in its box.’

"I did not know either!" Lustia finally snapped, her voice cracking with a sudden, sharp vulnerability.

Her fingers dug into his forearm, her divine essence flickering like a dying candle. "Not until the last several hours of this... this nightmare!"

"I am not hoarding secrets like a common politician, Rex!"

"I found this the same way you are finding it now by clawing through the wreckage, except I found it while trying to reach you through a connection that was actively fighting me!"

"That is incredibly convenient," Rex spat, his eyes narrowing. "A goddess who is just as surprised as her apostle..."

"It makes the whole ’divine authority’ thing look a little fucking flimsy, doesn’t it?"

"IT IS NOT CONVENIENT!" Lustia roared back, and for the first time, the mask of the serene goddess shattered completely.

The air in the domain shivered, a shockwave of golden energy rippling outward from her as her true power flared in indignation. "Convenient would be a lie that makes me look competent!"

"Convenient would be a story where I am in control!"

"This reality makes me look like a fool who nearly lost her most precious anchor and didn’t even see the tide coming until it was at her throat!"

She glared at him, her chest heaving, her eyes burning with a fierce, wounded pride. "If I wanted ’convenient,’ Rex, I would have given you a beautiful, polished myth..."

"But instead, you are getting the ugly, jagged truth!"

Rex stared at her, his jaw working, the muscles in his neck still corded like steel cables. He held her there for one more agonizing second, letting her feel the absolute weight of his displeasure, letting the silence stretch until it was a physical pressure.

Then, he released her.

He didn’t just let go; he threw her forward. It wasn’t a strike meant to break bone, but it was a violent, dismissive shove, a physical manifestation of the fact that his patience was a finite resource, and she was currently bankrupting him.

Lustia tumbled through the air, but she didn’t fall like a mortal. She moved with a liquid, predatory grace, her feet touching the stone with a soft thud as she transitioned the momentum into a perfect, upright landing.

She straightened her robes, her breath still coming in shallow, sharp bursts, and looked at him with a gaze that was no longer apologetic but grimly resolute.

"The Mark," she said, her voice regaining its strength, though it remained heavy with gravity.

She pointed a trembling finger toward his wrist, where the Mark of Lust was finally beginning to settle from its frantic, blinding white back into a dull, throbbing glow. "It is reacting to the trauma."

"It is doing exactly what it does when the system’s connection to your biological anchor is under extreme external pressure."

"The pressure wasn’t just magic, Rex... The pressure was the temporal influence itself."

Rex looked down at the Mark, his mind racing, trying to reconcile the physical sensation of the ache with the cosmic scale of her words.

"The influence was affecting me specifically," he countered, his voice hard. "It felt like it was targeting my very soul."

"No," Lustia corrected him, her voice dropping to a whisper that carried more weight than a shout. "The influence was affecting Aethelgard."

"You were affected because you are a part of it."

"You are a part of the fabric. And that is the horror of it, Rex..."

"A temporal working at a divine scale doesn’t hunt individual targets like a predator... It doesn’t pick you out of a crowd."

She looked up at the swirling, amber sky of her domain, her expression one of profound dread.

"It affects the substrate. It changes the very ground that all targets exist within."

"It isn’t changing you, Rex... it is changing the definition of when you are."

Rex looked down at his hands, his knuckles still white, his breath still coming in heavy, jagged plumes that seemed to cut through the divine air of the domain. He felt a profound sense of vertigo, as if the very concept of "now" had become a slippery, unreliable thing.

The Mark on his wrist was still thrumming, a frantic, rhythmic pulse that felt like a trapped bird beating its wings against his skin. But slowly, the frantic tempo began to decelerate.

It was the specific, gradual settling of a biological system receiving the signal that the immediate threat had passed the alarm was being silenced, but the dread remained.

"The God of Time," Lustia said, her voice cutting through the heavy silence like a funeral bell.

She didn’t look at him; she looked through the very fabric of the reality they stood upon. "That is the designation."

"The deity who holds the temporal domain within this world’s divine framework."

"The one who dictates the flow, the rhythm, and the decay of all things."

Rex turned his gaze toward her, his eyes hard and cold as flint.

"The God of Time," he repeated.

He said it slowly, with the flat, terrifyingly calm delivery of a man who was mentally checking every single piece of his life against this new, monstrous variable. He wasn’t just repeating the name; he was weighing it, testing its weight to see if it would crush him.

"Yes," she whispered.

"And this... this entity... has been operating on Aethelgard," Rex stated, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous rumble.

"Yes," she confirmed, her eyes finally meeting his, filled with a sorrow that seemed ancient.

"Without my knowledge," Rex said, the words tasting like ash in his mouth.

A flash of that dark, violent rage flickered in his eyes again. "Without a single god, or apostle, or ’all-seeing’ entity noticing that the very foundation of our existence was being tampered with."

"Without anyone’s knowledge, Rex!" Lustia countered, her voice rising in a desperate attempt to make him understand the scale of the deception. "That is the genius, the absolute horror of it!"

"The temporal influence is specifically engineered to operate below the threshold of consciousness."

"It is a ghost in the machine... The people of Aethelgard have had no way to identify it as an external force because the influence doesn’t feel like an invasion."

"It doesn’t feel like a storm or a war or a god’s hand. It feels like... the passage of time itself."

"It feels like the sun rising and the sun setting... it’s worse that it feels like breathing."

Rex felt a sickening lurch in his gut. A cold, visceral realization began to settle in his bones, more brutal than any physical wound he had ever sustained.

"So every person on that island," Rex said, his voice trembling with a suppressed, lethal fury, "every man, woman, and child... they’ve all been living inside a lie?"

"They’ve been trapped inside a divine mechanism, and they’ve just been calling it an ordinary morning?"

"Yes," Lustia said, her voice barely audible.

"And I have been one of them," Rex spat, the realization hitting him like a physical blow to the solar plexus.

’I was a puppet in a play where the stage was moving while I was dancing,’ he thought, his mind racing back through the recent past, replaying every moment through this new, distorted lens.

"Building the Underlayer. Bleeding in the dirt to fight Apollo. Sitting in that goddamn meeting room, watching the tension coil in the air, watching Valentina’s face fracture when Celestina’s name came out of Apollo’s mouth... all of it."

"Every triumph, every struggle, every drop of blood spilled... it was all happening inside a bubble..."

"We weren’t standing on solid ground."

"We were floating at a god’s whim."

He felt a sudden urge to strike something, to shatter the very air, to break the invisible walls of the temporal cage that had been holding him.

"Not entirely," Lustia said, stepping toward him, her hands reaching out as if to steady him, though she didn’t quite touch him.

Her expression was one of intense, focused gravity. "You were not entirely a prisoner, Rex."

"There are parts of you, parts of your will, that the influence could not fully synchronize."

"And that is the part that matters. That is the part that changes everything."

She paused, her eyes searching his, waiting for the storm in his gaze to settle just enough to receive the killing blow of the truth.

"But you have to hear the shape of the thing first," she warned, her voice trembling with the weight of what was coming. "You have to understand the architecture of the lie, or the part that matters... the part that will decide our fate... will not make any sense at all."
