Chapter 114: Ascension Dungeon

[Ascension Dungeon: Dungeon for the Ascension of the Host.

{Tap to enter the dungeon}

Note:

1. You will not be able to leave the dungeon until you reach the checkpoint.

2. Time flows quickly in the dungeon relative to the real world.]

"This dungeon feels kind of ominous," Vlad murmured as he read the display, lying on the rooftop of the dormitory. "Still, since it’s a reward from the system, it must be something to increase my strength."

With that thought, Vlad pulled out his phone and texted Chloe:

---

Vlad: I will be doing some training with the benefactor for a few days. Don’t skip classes in my absence or eat too much meat.

---

He hit send and tapped the screen to enter the dungeon.

The moment he did, the space before him shifted, flickers of electrical bolts and dark energy surrounding his silhouette. Before he could react, he was suddenly pulled backward. His body moved through a strange dimension with countless lines of different colors streaking past him, making his head spin.

Thud!

He suddenly fell to a cold floor, his heart pounding from what he had just experienced.

"What the hell just happ—Blerghhh!!!"

His words stopped mid-sentence as he began vomiting on all fours. He instantly recognized the sensation from his body’s usual response.

"Where have I been teleported to?" he muttered, wiping his lips with his sleeve as he rose to his feet. He sighed in relief that Chloe was not here, or she would have teased him endlessly about vomiting again.

He was standing inside a massive dark hall made of cobblestone walls. The floor beneath him was also formed of stone tiles, with moss creeping out of the gaps due to humidity, filling the hall with the earthy scent of wet rock and cold air.

The hall was tall, its ceiling lost in darkness above. It was strangely empty for its size. There were two massive doors, one at the front wall and one at the back. Glowing white stones were embedded at regular intervals along each wall, the only source of light in the otherwise dark hall.

At the center of the hall, atop a stone pillar about Vlad’s height, a shining black metallic sphere sat with a wooden sword leaning against the platform.

"What am I supposed to do here?" he wondered, looking around the hall.

Ding...

[You have entered the first phase of the first floor of the Ascension Dungeon!]

[Slice the sphere into two perfect halves using the wooden sword to enter the second phase.]

"It wants me to slice this sphere with this sword," Vlad raised an eyebrow in pure confusion as he studied the sphere and sword.

No matter how he looked at it, the sphere seemed to be made of some kind of dense metal, while the sword was just regular wood with no visible enchantments upon it.

"Well then, here goes nothing."

Vlad grabbed the sword with both hands and swung it down onto the sphere.

Crack!

The sword shattered into pieces on impact, splinters flying everywhere.

"It really was just a regular sword," Vlad sighed, facepalming. He had thought it might carry some hidden enchantment, but there truly was none.

He had barely begun wondering what to do next when the broken sword in his hand started glowing, several symbols appearing across its surface.

Its broken pieces rose from the floor and reattached to the sword in their original positions, restoring it completely to how it had looked before.

"Restoration runic magic?" Vlad gasped, his eyes widening, struggling to believe what he had just witnessed.

Runic magic was the most difficult magic to master, resulting in a very small number of Rune Mages. This magic was cast on items as enchantments or curses, or could be set within an area as traps.

Restoration was clearly one of the more advanced applications of runic magic, which explained Vlad’s shocked expression.

He did not waste much time in surprise, turning his focus back to the task at hand.

If it could be restored with magic, then Vlad had infinite attempts to slice the sphere.

With that thought, he swung the sword again, putting even more strength into it than before.

The result was the same. The sword shattered upon striking the sphere, the splinters scattering even farther than before.

"Again!"

Vlad began striking the sphere at the same point again and again, each strike carrying more force than the last, only for the sword to break with a louder crash each time.

Bam!

Bam!

Bam!

.

.

.

Bam!

Over an hour passed with relentless strikes. Vlad’s damp hair clung to his forehead, his skin soaked in sweat. His breathing grew ragged as exhaustion took over.

"N-not even a scratch on it," Vlad gasped, examining the sphere. Despite all those strikes, the ball remained completely spotless. "Do I need to keep attacking it endlessly until it finally breaks?"

This was all Vlad could come up with before resuming his assault on it.

The room continued to echo with the sound of wood striking metal and Vlad’s groans, until his arms finally gave out, too exhausted to even lift the sword.

He fell onto his back, his chest rising and falling with heavy breaths. If not for his phone, he would have completely lost track of time by now. He had been at it continuously for over twenty-five hours straight without a moment of rest.

There was still no mark on the sphere whatsoever.

He slept for a few hours. When he woke again, he scanned the room thoroughly, searching for any hints. The iron door at the front had a keyhole, while the gate at the back was completely plain. He searched for hidden mechanisms or a key to open the front gate, going so far as to press every tile on the floor and even attempting to pry them up, though he failed at the latter.

Just like the sphere at the center, the tiles were also completely unbreakable.

And just like that, the second day in the dungeon passed with no progress whatsoever.

"Should I try doing that?" he murmured as an idea struck him.

He drew the Eclair from his storage ring, unsheathed its sharp blade, and swung it down at the sphere with full force.
