Chapter 2134: Chapter 2134: Eighteenth Coming-of-Age Ceremony (Part 16)
Onlookers saw them and some enthusiastic ones even came forward to share their firsthand accounts of the scene, blocking Ruan Jiaojiao and Yu Rou from sight.
After the two traffic officers managed to disperse the crowd with great effort, they still couldn’t get a clear look at the involved parties, because suddenly a car stopped nearby. The next moment, the two only felt something flash by, and one of the parties was suddenly held tightly in an embrace.
Duan Xi held Jiaojiao in his arms, and the substantial touch finally helped slow down his rapidly beating heart a little.
Jiaojiao was held firmly, listening to Duan Xi’s pounding heartbeat, and she felt her own heart suddenly start to race in that moment.
"Brother Xi..." Although they usually hugged casually, doing so in front of so many people made Jiaojiao a bit shy, especially since the two traffic officers were watching them, which made her even more embarrassed. She lightly pushed Duan Xi’s hand.
Duan Xi didn’t care about the number of people around. He lowered his head and kissed her forehead, then turned to the traffic officers and said, "I’m her fiancé."
So?
The two traffic officers were a bit stunned.
"She’s a bit shocked and needs some time to calm down." Duan Xi said.
The two officers simultaneously looked at Jiaojiao, a strikingly beautiful girl, with features that seemed almost unreal, clearly someone cherished by her family. Now her face was pale, trying her best to stay composed, but there was still a hint of lingering fear and unease in her eyes.
Both officers were married with children and couldn’t help but feel a bit sympathetic, nodding immediately, "Take some time to rest aside, we’ll check the scene and take some photos."
"Brother Xi, I’m not that fragile." As the officers went to take photos, Jiaojiao looked somewhat helplessly at Duan Xi who still hadn’t released her.
Duan Xi didn’t speak, just held her in his arms; even now his hands still had a slight tremble.
Jiaojiao was somewhat surprised at his reaction being so intense. Recalling she hadn’t called him yet, since he called first, she looked up and asked, "Brother Xi, did you feel it?"
"Yes." At the time, Duan Xi was reviewing a program when suddenly a wave of apprehension hit—an all-too-familiar feeling that often came to him before Jiaojiao turned twelve, a feeling he would never forget.
"I’m sorry, it’s my fault." Nearby, Yu Rou started to recover a bit and said apologetically.
She had only gotten her license after graduating high school, just months ago. She thought she drove well, never expecting to cause such an incident. Recalling the moment it happened, she felt she would never want to drive again.
Duan Xi said nothing, just looked at her with a gaze that was somewhat cold and fierce; but mostly regretted himself, knowing that he shouldn’t have left Jiaojiao in someone else’s care to begin with.
"Brother Xi." Jiaojiao tugged at Duan Xi’s sleeve, knowing it couldn’t truly be blamed on Yu Rou.
Thinking it over, it was still that strange child both she and Yu Rou saw at the same time that suddenly disappeared.
She thought of this, and softly, in Duan Xi’s arms, recounted what had happened. Yu Rou chimed in, "Yes, I saw it too, a child suddenly jumped out, and I even heard the sound of the car hitting him. But when we got out, there was nothing to be found!"
