Chapter 1007: Chapter 1007: Unexpected Move

Chapter 1007: Unexpected Move

The San Francisco 49ers’ West Coast offense has reached its pinnacle this season. They’ve completely shattered the fundamental concepts of traditional formations, blending them to give every formation a full range of offensive capabilities. With a brilliant mind like Lu Ke at the helm, the charm of tactical play has reached its peak.

This is a perfect example:

What kind of combination is a multi-route passing formation paired with a traditional "I" formation for running plays?

With one receiver on the left, three on the right, and the running back, LaMichael James, positioned about seven yards behind Lu Ke, the formation becomes even more unpredictable. Typically, a running back stands about four yards behind the quarterback. A seven-yard distance suggests a powerful run, as it allows for a longer running start. Secondly, LaMichael is a power back, known for his hard, aggressive running and lack of catching ability.

So, is this a pass or a run?

The problem is, no one this season has been able to decipher the creative genius in the mind of the quarterback opposite them. The Arizona Cardinals’ defense was no exception.

"Hut!"

As Lu Ke called the snap, the Cardinals’ defense went all in. The three defensive linemen and two outside linebackers all rushed the offensive line’s pocket in a five-on-five quarterback blitz. But Crabtree, instead of charging forward, stayed in place, becoming an extra offensive lineman, making it a five-on-six advantage for the offense.

The Cardinals’ blitz, like a crashing wave, slammed into a solid seawall, creating a deafening roar. Neither side gave way, locked in a stalemate, which meant the offense had the upper hand once again.

So, what about the offense?

The offensive linemen separated, creating an open-ended pocket. There were fragmented gaps everywhere, large enough for even a big, bulky fullback like LaMichael James to easily run through. And that’s exactly what he did—the clumsy fullback rumbled right up the middle.

A more accurate description would be that he bulldozed his way through.

LaMichael, the least likely player to run a receiving route, was on the move.

At that moment, he was like a heavy tank: slow and ponderous, but powerful and unstoppable. He smoothly crossed the line of scrimmage, continuing to push forward—two yards, three yards, four yards... It was only a few yards, but in front of him, there was only a defensive line of two inside linebackers.

The two inside linebackers panicked. What were they supposed to do?

To make things worse, Ginn, who was lined up on the far right, ran a horizontal slant route, cutting across most of the field. In the blink of an eye, he zipped through the gap between the two inside linebackers and headed for the open space on the left side.

The left side was completely empty now. After the snap, Logan Newman, who was lined up there, had taken off fast and hard. Before LaMichael and Ginn showed up, he had already pushed ten yards downfield, forcing the opposing cornerback to follow him every step of the way, leaving the left side of the field with no defenders.

What now?

On one hand, LaMichael was a tank that one player couldn’t possibly stop. On the other hand, Ginn was a quick blade, and even a slight hesitation would mean losing him. Additionally, Logan’s run, which seemed slow, was actually a fierce drive, and the secondary was on high alert.

In a flash, the defensive players had no time to think and could only rely on their instincts.

Both inside linebackers stayed put, one in front and one behind, to form a combined defense against LaMichael’s charge. The cornerback who was covering Logan instantly changed his course and moved to intercept Ginn. And Logan, who had broken through his one-on-one with the cornerback, now had both safeties coming up to him.

And let’s not forget about Chad Hall.

Hall continued his run, calmly and methodically running a basic corner route on the right side. The cornerback on that side, Patrick Peterson, didn’t dare to be complacent and stuck to him like glue. But Hall didn’t seem to feel the pressure at all and just ran his route without any hesitation or doubt.

It was at that moment that Lu Ke moved.

After the snap, Lu Ke immediately took a few quick steps back. His agile vertical movement created space, taking him out of the pocket’s immediate protection. He stayed away from the chaotic scrum of the offensive and defensive lines. He turned and looked for a suitable passing lane, but he could clearly see that the entire pocket was crumbling.

Because Lu Ke’s position was far enough back, he didn’t need to feel for the pressure. He could see it all with a single glance:

The two outside linebackers on either side, with their nimble and quick feet, were pushing the big, clumsy offensive tackles backward, like a black bear trying to catch a butterfly. Joe Staley and Alex Boone were doing their best to hold on, but with every breath, the pincer movement was closing in. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Lu Ke paused, then stepped forward again, re-entering the pocket before the two sides could close in. Without a moment’s hesitation, he stepped up and launched the football with his right hand.

Based on the pass arc, it was a short pass, and it had already bypassed LaMichael and Ginn, meaning the target was—

Logan Newman, number 88!

This was only Logan’s third time on the field today as a rotational player. His previous two appearances were as a blocker, but this time, thanks to LaMichael’s surprise tactic, the entire defensive plan for the short-pass area was in disarray. At the same time, Logan’s feet hadn’t pushed into the deep-pass zone. He made an emergency stop in the mid-pass zone, which meant the two safeties were too late to react, giving Logan a pocket to catch the ball.

The ball was on its way!

It was a medium pass of about fifteen yards, with a low, flat, and fast arc. As Logan was cutting toward the middle, the football arrived. He caught the ball on the run, cleanly at his chest, just as the defensive players were starting to react.

Because Lu Ke’s pass was so precise and powerful, Logan didn’t need to adjust his steps at all. He immediately took control of the ball with his right hand and ran forward quickly.

An inside linebacker came from behind, and two safeties were coming from the front. He was instantly surrounded by three players, but Logan didn’t panic. He made a quick move toward a 30-degree angle to the right, slicing a breakthrough in the encirclement like a surgical knife.

The three defensive players all tried to tackle him, but with his high-speed running, they couldn’t adjust their center of gravity in time. They could see Logan just an arm’s length away, but their feet and rhythm weren’t aligned. They couldn’t even attempt a tackle without risking a collision that would send them flying off course like a motorcycle on a turn.

Logan didn’t speed up completely. He maintained his steady pace and kept his body tense, ready for a tackle at any moment. In the blink of an eye, he had already gained about fifteen yards, and the midfield line was just within reach. Then, he saw the other cornerback, Patrick Peterson, coming at him from the right.

Logan tried to force a small arc to the outside, attempting to go around him.

But at that moment, Hall was unable to stop Patrick. Patrick threw his entire body forward, pushing Logan’s shoulders with both hands before he could escape. He used his body’s momentum and gravity to push Logan violently toward the sideline.

Logan stumbled out of bounds.

"Wow! Look who’s back! Logan Newman, number 88, has once again proven he’s one of the best tight ends in the league. After a 15-yard catch, Newman managed to push for another 30 yards, single-handedly carrying the offense to the opponent’s 40-yard line."

"Beautiful!"

"Lu Ke’s tactical plan and ability to seize the moment remain incredibly calm. My goodness, he looks like a seasoned veteran who has been playing on this field for ten years, showing none of the panic or excitement of a second-year quarterback. This is truly remarkable."

After going out of bounds, Logan turned around, spread his hands with an innocent expression, and mumbled to his teammates, "I really didn’t try my best. I was just casually catching the ball. But... how did I end up getting so far?"

His comical act received no response, as Lu Ke was waving for them to quickly get in formation. Logan quickly tossed the football to the referee, looked at his coach Harbaugh, and after receiving a nod of approval, he returned to the field, not rotating out with Vernon.

Harbaugh understood Lu Ke’s intention: they needed to snap the ball quickly and get the offense going. By suddenly increasing the tempo, they would further disrupt the Cardinals’ defensive rhythm. So, there was no time to substitute players, and the same group of players remained on the field.

As expected, Lu Ke quickly lined up and snapped the ball. The entire offensive tempo suddenly doubled or tripled, and the Cardinals’ defense was instantly thrown into chaos.

The San Francisco 49ers once again lined up in the exact same formation, with the only difference being that Lu Ke was no longer standing right behind the center, but four yards back in the pistol formation.

What to do? What should the defense do?

"Hut!"
