Chapter 1247: Chapter 635: Qiu Niang

Wu Family’s granary.

Qiu Niang was almost about to cry with joy: where there’s a village, there are naturally people, the official can be saved!

Upon seeing the village, the entire convoy was invigorated and sped forth. Meanwhile, the wolf pack behind them slowed down, seeming somewhat hesitant.

The aging man rejoiced: "It’s effective indeed, these beasts are really quite spiritual, they probably fear this place too."

The convoy continued racing ahead, the leader seemingly cautious, didn’t dash into the village, but rather turned aside, intending to bypass it.

Behind the village was a steep mountain path, only wide enough for five people to walk side by side, though to the convoy, it seemed like a straight path to Heaven. Several whistles burst forth from the front, though the sound was quite hushed, as if afraid of alarming something.

The aging man’s voice also reduced: "Slow down, don’t run, just walk slowly past."

The wolves that had been trailing finally halted. Those behind pushed forward, while those in front stopped, restless, seemingly fearing some invisible force.

They stopped 300 meters from Wu Family’s granary, as if an invisible line on the ground prevented them from crossing.

Qiu Niang was thinking that the convoy still intended to move forward without stopping. In that case, she ought to enter the village for help.

She wasn’t foolish; clearly, there were various anomalies here, both humans and wolves were quite afraid of this place. Yet, her person hadn’t been rescued, she decided to take this risk and charge into the village.

Qiu Niang quietly rolled to the back of the vehicle and leapt down.

Her body was light, though she was clothed thickly, so none of the two carriage drivers heard the sound she made.

Under the gaze of numerous green "lanterns," she swiftly fled into the Wu Family’s granary territory, crossing that big stone at the village entrance.

Behind her, the silent convoy quickly ascended the mountain path and sped away.

...

If she remembered correctly, today was the third day of the lunar new year.

In such a small mountain village, there likely wasn’t much to entertain at night, hence people mostly hid back inside their homes. She could see the lights were still on in about a hundred or so homes, shadows flickering as people came and went.

The village looked just like any mountain village she had passed. The open space in front of houses was mostly grain drying grounds, farmyards usually planted with trees, the calls of dogs and cats mingling, she could hear faint voices coming from inside the homes.

Having people around was good. Qiu Niang exhaled deeply, pondering how to find someone to ask for help. In a blink, she saw two children playing at the village entrance, dressed in red and green, wearing new clothes.

The villagers here have a lot of nerve, don’t they? There are wild wolves outside, yet they dare let their children run out to play?

As she was wondering, the boy kicked a firecracker, the small thing flew up and landed precisely on Qiu Niang, "pop" it exploded, burning a hole in her padded jacket.

Normally, she would have chided "don’t be so naughty," but time was pressing, she had no moment to fuss over these things. She bent down towards the other little girl urgently: "Nannan, are your parents home?"

This little girl’s eyes were big, her face pale, she glanced at Qiu Niang a few times, then nodded upon hearing her, turned back and loudly called: "Ah dad, Ah mom!"

Qiu Niang was startled by the sudden shout from the little ghost, just feeling the piercing child voice echo in the open wilderness, indescribably eerie.

With a "creak," the wooden door she was facing opened, out came a man, tall and muscular, knuckles thick, clearly accustomed to physical labor. Behind him, followed a farm-dressed young woman in her thirties.

Finally, she saw normal people. Qiu Niang was relieved, stepped forward and said: "Brother, please help me!"

The man upon seeing her, hesitated slightly, scrutinizing her up and down. The woman behind him was also sizing her up, at this moment as if realizing something, suddenly raised her eyebrows, exclaimed: "Bro, it’s her! She’s here!"

Her voice was not quiet, it spread far.

"She’s here!"

These three words floated in the night sky of the small mountain village, echoing continuously, lingering as if swirling three times before dissipating. Meanwhile, all the farmers’ small talks disappeared entirely.

Wu Family’s granary suddenly plunged into graveyard-like silence, only the cold wind howling by.

So what if she’s here, why the fuss? Why are the people here so alarmed? Qiu Niang frowned as she continued saying: "I and the official fell off the carriage, I can’t find him, would you please help, and save him?"

The man suddenly laughed heartily: "Save you, of course, you should be saved!" Stepped forward two steps, fingers spread wide, and reached out to grasp her.

His features twisted suddenly, filled with inscrutable malice. Qiu Niang shivered, backed two steps, instinctively avoiding the grasp, stunned: "What are you doing?"

"Haven’t you already known?" He exhaled a breath white air through his nose, taking large strides towards her.

Qiu Niang didn’t hesitate any longer, turned and fled. Yet she barely ran two steps when despairingly she noticed, somehow, villagers from all sides were slowly closing in around her. They gazed at her intensely, with a look akin to her house’s wolfdogs seeing meat.

This expression wasn’t any friendlier than the man behind!

What is wrong with the people of this village? Ke Niang, terrified and frightened, seeing that the crowd hadn’t fully surrounded her, turned to run outside, but was immediately grabbed by the man from behind.

His strength was immense, Qiu Niang instantly felt pain pierce her heart, couldn’t help but bite hard on his hand.

"Ah!" The man didn’t expect her sudden action, his grip loosened. Though Qiu Niang was panicked, her movements weren’t slow, her slim build allowing her to slip through the yet-to-close gaps in the encircling crowd.

"It’s her! Catch her!" Man’s roar bellowed from behind, and the sound of footsteps scatteredly arose, evidently the pursuers began running.

Escape, quickly escape! She instinctively knew, if these people caught up, the consequence would be extremely dire. Qiu Niang exerted all her strength, panting, she charged forth. (To be continued.
