Chapter 2309: Humanity’s destiny

Remy Lavern. That was a name that Lex had paid some attention to in the early days of the Inn. But as the Inn grew, and it faced greater horizons, it was a name that was relegated to the background - not completely forgotten, but mostly unimportant.

Lex had even received a quest related to him once. Remy, upon learning about the wondrous uses of the Midnight Inn’s golden keys, wanted to use the Midnight Inn as a meeting location to discuss matters with members of his secret intelligence organisation. Communication across galaxies was too slow and difficult, but with the Midnight Inn it became a simple matter of congregating at the same time.

Back then, he was someone who seemed to know the inner workings of the Jotun Empire, which was a huge breach of security. When Lex was weak, it seemed unbelievable and monumental. Later on, he couldn’t be bothered by it because the Jotun Empire was far from the strongest empire he had been facing.

Nowadays, dealing with organisations with Dao Lords and control over several Major realms, he seemed to have become even less worthy of notice. That wasn’t to say that he would be looked down upon as a guest. Rather, even when Lex had the Host Attire, he wasn’t someone Lex paid special attention to.

After all, even if he knew a few secrets, were they worthy of his attention? Or could they even be secrets from Lex at all, based on the numerous intelligence sources he had spread out across the universe?

First was Velma in the Humanoid Alliance, who was a master of gossip. He also had Anita’s undead spread out across the Origin realm. There was also Roland’s covert intelligence ring which originally comprised the children who came to the Midnight Daycare, but had long since grown and entered into various levels of society.

Besides them, he even had the two Rhinocentaurs who shared intel on a daily basis from their own original sources. Last but not least, he had the Newsroom where people could come and sell information for MP, or trade it for information they needed.

Compared to all of that, what could Remy even have to offer? Thus, his was a name that was of little importance. Not to mention, Lex didn’t even have access to the Host Attire anymore, so even if he wanted to, he could not spy on him.

Yet, for some odd reason, it was this Remy Lavern, who was once again having a secret meeting inside the Midnight Realm, who seemed to have access to information that, for various reasons, seemed out of reach of the members of the Midnight Inn.

At the head of the conference table sat Remy, a member of the Atila race - a race that mutated off from humans. Although they originated from humans, the Atila race were actually much stronger than humans, and even had the ability to shapeshift into any humanoid race, making them perfect for espionage.

The only drawback of their race was that the stronger they became, the more violent tendencies they had, causing them to form somewhat of a bottleneck in terms of growth and utility.

"I’m glad to see that you all have been making steady progress in your missions," Remy said, his tone and expression at ease, as if everything had been going well for him in life. "I was recently contacted by Lord Kingmaker who has updated me on several matters, and given us a new set of missions."

Across the room, the various members of the secret intelligence agency nodded and listened eagerly.

"First, the focus of the universe has shifted. These are things that are far beyond us, but we should know anyway to better understand the local trends. Many forces have attacked the Angels, and the Humanoid Alliance has focused strongly on their defense. The scale of the attack on the Angels basically means that a lot of pressure has been shifted away from the other races.

"While for other Noble races, such as Devils, Elves, Dwarves and Celestials, it hardly matters since they will be forced to divert their Dao Lords to protect the Angels, this has created an opportunity for certain Vassal Races. Key among them are the humans."

Lex, within the Upper Battlefield, assumed that the titles of Noble Races and Vassal races were specific to that realm. What he hadn’t realized was that these terms were generic to the whole universe.

The top ten races on the Cosmic Ascendance Spectrum were the Sage races. From the eleventh to the hundredth position were the Elder races. Below the Elder races were the Noble races, which basically included all races below the hundredth spot, and had a minimum of five Dao Lords across their race.

All races below that were Vassal races, even if they had as many as four Dao Lords. While it was somewhat unfair to lump races with one to four Dao Lords in the same category as races without even a single one, in the grand scheme of things, it was all the same.

After all, their status in the universe could only allow them to be vassals of other, more powerful races. At best, they were somewhat more capable vassals than others.

"Using this opportunity where attention is diverted away from keeping the humans suppressed, many forces are trying to revive the legacy of the humans. Of course, many other races are attempting to do the same, for example the mermaid race or the cherub race.

"Our focus, however, will be focused on the humans. Many ancient legacies, heritages and sects will open their doors to humanity. The techniques, paths and even Daos of ancient humans will come within reach. Our goal will be to find and focus on any and all humans who seem to be carrying a hint of Humanity’s destiny.

"With the Nexus event approaching, this could be the turning point for the human race. This is the only opportunity for them to rise from the ashes. Simultaneously, it is the only chance for us to get our hands on the ancient legacies of humanity. Even if we do not gain access to the legacies, by establishing a close relationship with these chosen few, we can benefit from the rapid growth that they will likely experience during this time.

"Almost all forces will be looking to do the same. In fact, many suspect that even the Midnight Inn focused on nurturing so many humans because it already anticipated such a thing long ago - not that the Inn’s actions have anything to do with us.

"The Kingmaker merely wants us to..."
