Chapter 122: Immortal Janitor
The next morning...
Yun Wanhe sat through his classes with his chin resting in one hand.
Chu Luoshen continued lecturing at the front of the classroom.
"And that’s why supply and demand—"
Yun Wanhe heard none of it.
His gaze remained fixed on the row in front of him.
Chi Lingxi.
She quietly took notes.
She laughed softly at something her friend had whispered her.
She spoke to several classmates.
But...
Not once...
Did she look in his direction.
’...’
Yun Wanhe’s fingers slowly curled into a fist beneath the desk.
[She ignored me yesterday...]
[And she’s still ignoring me today...]
[Surely...]
[Surely she’s just embarrassed.]
[She must be too shy to speak to this Immortal Emperor.]
He convinced himself with that thought.
Unfortunately...
The moment class ended...
Chi Lingxi packed her books.
One of her classmates smiled.
"Sister Lingxi, want to grab coffee?"
"Sure."
She stood up.
Walked straight past Yun Wanhe.
Didn’t acknowledge him.
Didn’t greet him.
Didn’t even glance his way.
"..."
Yun Wanhe remained standing there.
Watching her disappear into the hallway.
Another crack quietly formed in his confidence.
That afternoon...
Yun Wanhe arrived outside Ling Shuangxue’s company.
The skyscraper towered into the clouds.
Its mirrored windows reflected the afternoon sun.
He looked up.
"A janitor... This Immortal Emperor... Reduced to this..."
After taking a deep breath...
He stepped inside.
The lobby was immaculate.
Marble floors.
Crystal chandeliers.
Employees hurried back and forth.
At the reception desk...
A young woman adjusted her glasses.
She wore a perfectly pressed business suit.
Her expression was cold.
Professional.
She looked up.
"Yun Wanhe?"
"Yes."
She closed the folder in front of her.
"I’m Ling Shuangxue’s secretary. I’ll be supervising you."
Her voice carried absolutely no warmth.
"Follow me."
Several minutes later...
They reached the janitorial storage room.
The secretary handed him a cart.
Bucket.
Mop.
Brushes.
Rubber gloves.
Cleaning chemicals.
She looked him directly in the eye.
"Your duties."
She handed him a clipboard.
"Clean every restroom. Wipe every window on floors one through three. Empty every trash can. Scrub the employee cafeteria. Polish every hallway. And clean the underground parking garage."
Yun Wanhe looked at the list.
"All of this?"
The secretary smiled.
It wasn’t a pleasant smile.
"It should only take eight hours. If you’re efficient."
She turned around.
"Oh. And..."
She pointed toward another hallway.
"The executive restroom. It needs special attention."
Yun Wanhe frowned.
"Executive restroom?"
The secretary nodded.
"Our executives are very particular. If there’s even one stain..."
She smiled again.
"You’ll clean it again."
Then she walked away.
Half an hour later...
Yun Wanhe stood inside the executive restroom.
"..."
His expression was completely blank.
One hand held a toilet brush.
The other...
A bottle of cleaner.
"This..."
He stared at the toilet.
"This Immortal Emperor... Once shook the Nine Heavens..."
He slowly lowered the brush.
"Is scrubbing toilets."
He vigorously cleaned the bowl.
A passing executive glanced inside.
"Hm. There’s still a water spot."
"..."
Yun Wanhe slowly looked up.
"There."
The executive pointed.
"The corner."
"..."
The executive smiled politely.
"Please clean it properly."
Then left.
"..."
Veins bulged across Yun Wanhe’s forehead.
An hour later...
He was on his knees...
Scrubbing gum off the underside of a desk.
"When I regain enough cultivation... The heavens themselves... Will answer for this humiliation..."
Another hour.
He emptied trash cans.
One employee casually tossed a coffee cup into the bin...
Missing completely.
"Sorry."
Without another word...
Yun Wanhe bent down.
Picked it up.
Threw it away.
His eye twitched.
Later...
He mopped an entire hallway.
The floor sparkled.
An employee walked across it with muddy shoes.
"Oh. My bad."
"..."
Yun Wanhe silently began mopping again.
Meanwhile...
Several floors above...
Inside the CEO’s office...
Shen Tian sat comfortably on the sofa.
A bowl of fruit rested beside him.
Ling Shuangxue calmly worked through several documents.
On the wall...
A large security monitor displayed dozens of live camera feeds.
One of them...
Showed Yun Wanhe.
Currently cleaning a toilet.
Shen Tian took a grape.
Popped it into his mouth.
"Pfft."
He quickly covered his mouth.
Ling Shuangxue looked up.
"Trying not to laugh?"
Shen Tian pointed at the screen.
"He’s actually not losing it... I’m shocked."
Xu Ning appeared beside the sofa in holographic form.
[I informed the secretary exactly how to schedule his workload.]
Another monitor switched.
Yun Wanhe was now polishing the lobby floor.
An employee accidentally spilled an entire cup of coffee.
The secretary appeared beside him.
"Oh."
She looked down.
"What a shame."
She pointed at the puddle.
"Clean it."
"..."
Yun Wanhe slowly nodded.
"Yes."
Back in the office...
Shen Tian finally lost it.
"Hahaha!"
He leaned back against the sofa.
"I can’t... Hahaha... The mighty Immortal Emperor..."
He pointed at the monitor again.
"Cleaning coffee stains!"
Even Ling Shuangxue’s cold expression softened.
The corners of her lips curved upward.
"My secretary is doing an excellent job."
Shen Tian nodded.
"She’s following your instructions perfectly."
Another camera feed appeared.
The secretary handed Yun Wanhe another clipboard.
"Once you’re finished... The windows."
He looked at the list.
"Again?"
"You missed fingerprints."
"..."
"They’re on the outside."
"..."
"You’ll need the suspended cleaning platform."
"..."
Shen Tian laughed so hard he nearly dropped his bowl of fruit.
"This..."
He wiped away a tear.
"...is worth every penny."
Ling Shuangxue calmly took another sip of tea.
"I instructed the secretary not to cross the line. But..."
She glanced at Yun Wanhe trying to wipe fingerprints off the outside of the twentieth-floor windows.
"She does seem to be enjoying herself."
The secretary, watching from below with folded arms, smiled ever so slightly.
"Still streaky. Do it again."
Yun Wanhe gripped the squeegee so tightly it creaked.
Inside his mind...
Only one sentence echoed over and over.
’I was an Immortal Emperor...’
Suddenly...
A loud chime echoed throughout the building.
"It seems you lucked out... It’s your lunch time..." The secretary clicked her tongue in annoyance.
"Finally!" Yun Wanhe felt like tears were going to fall from his eyes.
Getting down...
His shirt was damp with sweat.
His hands smelled faintly of industrial cleaning chemicals.
He walked back into the building.
’This is beneath me. Completely beneath me.’
He walked into the employee break room.
Inside...
Several other janitors were already eating lunch around a worn plastic table.
The moment Yun Wanhe entered...
The room became quiet.
One middle-aged janitor looked up.
"Oh. The new guy."
Another chuckled.
"The one who looked like he was attending a fashion show this morning."
A third laughed.
"I thought he was applying to be a higher position."
The room erupted with snickers.
Yun Wanhe ignored them.
He quietly walked over to a vending machine.
As he reached for a bottle of water...
One of the janitors deliberately bumped his shoulder.
"Oops... My bad."
The water bottle slipped from Yun Wanhe’s hand.
It rolled across the floor.
The men laughed again.
"What? You gonna cry?"
Another leaned back in his chair.
"I heard he complained about cleaning toilets."
He grinned.
"Buddy... You’re a janitor. What did you think you’d be cleaning?"
The room laughed again.
Yun Wanhe slowly bent down.
Picked up the bottle.
He remained silent.
One of the younger janitors smirked.
"I heard he’s still in high school. Must’ve failed pretty hard to end up here."
Another laughed.
"Maybe Mommy kicked him out."
"..."
A vein bulged on Yun Wanhe’s forehead.
The first man noticed.
"Ooo. Look. He’s angry. What’re you gonna do?"
He casually poked Yun Wanhe’s chest.
"Huh? Pretend you’re some kind of martial arts master?"
"..."
Yun Wanhe slowly looked down at the finger touching him.
Then...
He looked back up.
His expression had gone completely emotionless.
"I warned you."
The janitor blinked.
"...What?"
"I said... I warned you."
The man laughed.
"I don’t remember that."
"..."
Yun Wanhe sighed.
"So be it."
The next second...
BAM!
His fist buried itself into the man’s stomach.
The janitor’s eyes nearly popped out of his head.
"W-WHAT—"
He folded over before crashing into the vending machine.
CLOOOONG!
Cans exploded everywhere.
The other three shot to their feet.
"The hell?!"
One charged.
Yun Wanhe sidestepped.
Grabbed his wrist.
Twisted.
THUD!
The man landed flat on his back.
Another swung wildly.
Yun Wanhe ducked beneath it.
His elbow drove into the man’s ribs.
CRACK!
"AAAAH!"
The last janitor hesitated.
"..."
"Forget this!"
He turned to run.
Yun Wanhe grabbed the back of his shirt.
Lifted him...
And tossed him onto the break room couch.
BOOM!
The couch flipped over.
Silence.
The entire break room looked as though a tornado had passed through.
Four janitors groaned on the floor.
Yun Wanhe calmly adjusted his shirt as he muttered under his breath:
"Hmph. This Immortal Emperor has tolerated enough disrespect."
He turned toward the door.
Only to freeze.
The secretary stood there.
Holding a clipboard.
She had witnessed...
Everything.
"..."
"..."
Secretary looked around the destroyed break room.
Then at the four injured janitors.
Then...
At Yun Wanhe.
She pushed her glasses up.
"Finished?"
Yun Wanhe folded his arms.
"They provoked me."
The secretary nodded.
"I heard."
The four janitors immediately shouted,
"He attacked us!"
"He’s crazy!"
"He assaulted us!"
The secretary calmly looked at them.
"You verbally harassed him."
"..."
"You intentionally shoved him."
"..."
"You initiated physical contact."
The room became quiet.
The janitors looked relieved.
One even smiled.
"See? It wasn’t our fault either."
The secretary nodded once.
"I agree."
Yun Wanhe frowned.
"Then?"
The secretary flipped a page on her clipboard.
"Everyone involved violated company policy."
The four janitors immediately paled.
The secretary continued.
"You four."
She pointed.
"Formal disciplinary write-up. Mandatory workplace conduct seminar. And no overtime for the next month."
Their faces fell.
The secretary looked toward Yun Wanhe.
"As for you..."
Yun Wanhe folded his arms.
"They attacked first."
"I know."
"You defended yourself."
"I know."
He nodded.
"Then there is no issue."
Secretary smiled.
"There is."
"..."
"You still engaged in a physical altercation inside company property."
"..."
She calmly wrote something down.
"As disciplinary action..."
She looked him directly in the eyes.
"You’ll be working four additional hours today."
"..."
"..."
"Overtime?"
Secretary nodded.
"Unpaid."
A vein bulged across Yun Wanhe’s forehead.
"..."
The secretary handed him another clipboard.
"I almost forgot."
She smiled pleasantly.
"The executive floor requested another restroom deep cleaning."
"..."
"And..."
She flipped another page.
"The underground parking garage."
"..."
"Someone tracked mud across the entire floor."
"..."
"And..."
She handed him a second mop.
"The lobby. Footprints were left by the rain that began falling outside."
"..."
Back upstairs...
Ling Shuangxue’s office.
Shen Tian watched the security footage.
He nearly fell off the sofa laughing.
"Hahaha! He defended himself... Hahaha... And still got overtime!"
Xu Ning nodded seriously.
[This secretary is extremely efficient.]
Ling Shuangxue calmly looked over another report.
Without looking up...
She said,
"She was one of the strictest department managers before becoming my secretary."
Shen Tian pointed at the monitor.
Yun Wanhe slowly accepted the mop with the expression of someone questioning every decision that had led him to this moment.
"Hahaha... I almost feel bad..."
On the monitor...
The secretary gave one final instruction before walking away.
"Oh."
Yun Wanhe looked up.
"Yes?"
She smiled.
"Please make sure the toilets sparkle. I’ll be inspecting them personally."
"..."
She turned the corner and disappeared.
Yun Wanhe stared silently at the toilet brush in his hand.
His eye twitched.
