Chapter 22: The Enemy Above

-----

Immediately after leaving the building, Amy dragged Theon all the way to the infirmary with Damon, Reed and Lucius following closely behind.

While they would’ve loved to go back to their room and rest up, they knew they were bound to get scolded by Amy. By scolding— they meant getting their asses beaten.

Theon had gotten lost twice, while under their watch. It was more than that, but they decided to count it as twice to mentally remind themselves that they would be in for it if he was ever missing again.

When they arrived at the infirmary, Amy made sure it was a male nurse that was checking Theon’s condition before giving him some privacy.

At the end of the day, no irregularities were found and he was cleared to go.

It was time to head back to their dorms, but Amy insisted on escorting them before she would go back to hers.

Damon, Reed and Lucius gave Theon a look he understood very well. ’Find a way to get rid of her.’

Theon tried. And he failed.

As usual, it was impossible to change Amy’s mind when she had decided to do something.

It took about thirty minutes to reach their dormitories, and finally it was time for Amy to leave.

And she did.

But not after issuing multiple threats to the trio that made them gulp and sweat profusely.

Theon could only stare at them silently, with an apologetic look. He had no control over what Amy choose to say or do.

Finally, she left.

Only then did Damon, Reed, and Lucius feel like they could breathe properly again.

"I still stand on my word," Lucius breathed out hard, as if he had been holding his breath throughout their walk back to the dorms. "Amy might be the scariest person I have ever met."

He turned and looked at Reed with an expression filled with pity. "How did you even manage to survive with that demoness during your childhood?"

Reed pondered silently, then sighed. "Till this day— I don’t know."

"That is not who we should be placing our pity on," Damon said.

Both Lucius and Reed nodded in agreement, then they all simultaneously turned and focused their gazes filled with pity.

"What?" Theon asked, seeing the expression they all carried on their faces.

’He really is a dead man.’ They all thought simultaneously.

----

After retreating to their room, they all took turns taking showers.

Once Theon was done, he changed into a sweat shirt and a pair of black shorts.

He could finally feel comfortable once again.

Though he had been healed, that didn’t erase all the sweat and dried blood that still hung on his uniform and skin.

’That uniform, I don’t think I’ll ever wear it again.’ He thought, walking over to his bed. ’Luckily the academy provided multiple uniforms for each student.’

It was time to go to bed. It had been an incredibly long day for all of them, but Lucius had other plans.

He couldn’t just let them sleep peacefully.

No.

They had to engage in multiple conversations before Lucius would be able to sleep without feeling a prickly sensation under his skin.

He did the same thing every night, and each time he had a different topic.

The worst part was that they all had no choice but to listen or Lucius would just pester them till they eventually gave up.

Tonight, the topic of discussion was on— women.

Theon listened with keen ears, and each passing moment he couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.

He couldn’t shake off the feeling that this discussion was mainly because of him.

But soon, Theon felt his thoughts drifting to everything Reacher had told him today.

Firstly, about Adrian’s backer.

The ten great families.

The top families in the world of Oris, each possessing powers capable of toppling continents on earth within half a day.

Oris was separated into five regions, and each region had two families of the ten that governed them.

The academy was located in the eastern region of Oris, which was governed by the Mortaine family and the Valerius family.

Sadly—

Adrian was a part of the Mortaine family. And the Main family at that, not just one of the branches.

’This is going to be a real thorn in my ass,’ Theon thought to himself. ’If I don’t plan properly, I might just have another enemy added to the list. And this time, it would be an enemy that could literally destroy me with the snap of a finger.’

’Sadly, it’s not just about planning—’ Theon’s gaze sharpened. ’I also need to grow stronger if I aim to kill Adrian.’

Power. That was what it all boiled down to.

Because the second thing he had discovered was about Adrian’s current power level.

He possessed an Elemental Mutation type, namely The Tyrant’s Inferno. ’He really got a name that suits his personality.’

His mutation type granted him the ability to manipulate and bend flames to his will. He could also generate such flames as well.

In fact, the whole Mortaine family’s ability was built on that, flame. Rarely anyone from the Mortaine family was born without a Flame mutation type. (Mutation types will be explained in the next Chapter.)

Not only that, but Adrian also possessed a Gold rank purity level. He was also a C-rank resonant.

And at Theon’s level, he had no hope of aiming to best Adrian.

The gap between a C-rank and D-rank was already incredibly big, mainly because a single C-rank resonant could handle more than twenty D-ranks.

Let alone E-ranks such as Theon.

Well Theon wasn’t a normal E-Rank. He could probably handle three D-Ranks at most, but that was it.

Compared to Adrian, it was child’s play.

’If I can reach D-rank in the next two weeks, then maybe I might stand a chance.’ Theon clenched his fist.

The third thing that Reacher told him was what Theon already knew: Adrian was responsible for his death.

The people involved, were himself, Adrian and Brook.

That was it.

Adrian’s reason for killing Theon.

Well, he simply got bored.

That simply fueled Theon’s anger the more. Adrian was basically playing with people’s lives like they were his dolls.

And Theon didn’t plan on letting that continue.

’Get ready Adrian,’ Theon gritted his teeth. ’You just brought upon yourself a massive storm.’

----

While Lucius continued his meaningless discussion about women, Reed couldn’t help but peek a glance at Theon who seemed lost in his own world.

’I still can’t believe it—’ he squinted his eyes. ’That student is a D-Rank second year student. Even if it was just by luck, there is no way someone like you would’ve been able to inflict the injuries I saw on him.’

’Luck only explains so much, Theon—’ Reed’s gaze narrowed further. ’What exactly are you hiding from us?’
