Chapter 701: The Killer.
His curiosity made him ask himself, thinking, ’Did he find a way to bypass the limit, or was the limit only put in place after he became a Dao Lord? Or am I just being paranoid about a limit, and it doesn’t exist?’
He didn’t dare to say all of these out loud, the way he had initially asked the question about why alliances weren’t trying to become as big as they could. Instead, he said all of these things in his head, where he was relatively certain that no one would hear his words.
As he thought about this, a faint gloom appeared in his heart. But the gloom quickly disappeared and was replaced by determination.
His eyes became stern as he remembered how he had once said he would accomplish the same thing as the Sword Lord and become a Dao Lord. At that time, he had been a clueless mortal speaking grand words that he didn’t know the cost of achieving.
But even now that he knew more about what he was up against, he was still determined to achieve what he had promised to accomplish. In fact, he is not content with just becoming a Dao Lord anymore.
He clenched his fist as he said inwardly, ’Becoming a Dao Lord is just the next step. I will achieve that step and take the next step after. Then I will take more steps after that if they exist.’
’I will eat everyone who stands in the way of my ascension. And if there is a God at the end of the ladder preventing me from rising to the top of the world, I will eat that God too.’
With his determination burning like a flame, he returned to prowling the second heaven for prey.
Meanwhile, the divine beings were still talking. They weren’t talking about the recent ascension, though. They had more important matters to discuss.
A giant warrior from the Martial Body snorted and said, "Good for the Sword Way Sect. What I care about is the situation of the second heaven."
An array master from the Myriad Phenomenon Sect immediately said in agreement, "What is even going on in the second heaven? As far as I can tell, previously unseen divine beings are using unknown Divine Metacs to kill people. Is that even possible?"
A Killer immediately pointed accusatory fingers at the Nexus of Truth Sect and said, "This is clearly the doing of deceivers and seers. The deceivers are hiding their identities while killing people. Then the seers help them find and raid the Cave Heaven of the deceased."
A sword cultivator from the same Sword Way Sect nodded and said, "It is most likely the divine beings of the Nexus of Truth who are behind this. What I don’t understand is why they are doing this."
A forger also said with confusion, "From the looks of things, they don’t care about what pathway anyone is on. They can kill whoever they fancy, plunder their Cave Heaven, and take their Divine Metacs."
"My best guess is that they are doing this to get money by selling the Cave Heaven and the Divine Metacs to other buyers. After all, they can’t use the Cave Heaven and Divine Metacs of other pathways themselves."
A talisman master nodded as she listened before saying, "They must be selling the Divine Metacs very quickly, too. I am sure about this because I know someone who tried to refine a Divine Metac as soon as the previous owner died, but the summoning process failed, and all of the money they spent on the resources to refine the Divine Metac went to waste."
"That failure to summon the Divine Metac can only happen if someone is actively using the Divine Metacs. So someone else in the pathway must have gotten the Divine Metac a few moments after the original owner of the Divine Metac died."
The sword cultivator looked at everyone as he said, "If you’re right, then everyone is an accomplice to their crime. They must be selling those Cave Heavens and Divine Metacs to someone, right? So if we stop encouraging them, they will stop the killings."
A deceiver finally spoke. She said, "I am not saying that we are really killing other divine beings for money. But what I’ll say is that if we are killing for money, it is not like someone hired and paid us to kill a target of theirs for them."
"So it is more like assassinations, not a murder spree, where we sell the loot of our murders after the murder. That will explain how we find the so-called buyers for the Divine Metacs so quickly. After all, the person who hired us is already prepared to take the Divine Metac."
Another deceiver chuckled and said, "That’s actually a great way to go about it. So you shouldn’t look to blame us. You should blame each other."

The argument was so intense that only the fact that there was nothing to gain by fighting prevented them from having an all-out brawl.
